Another year Wiser…

My friends, I am alive!  I swear to it!

I’ve just been so incredibly busy in the last week, between travel for work, birthday celebrations, and my obsession with Downton Abbey (I’m almost fully caught up on the current season). I have hardly had two seconds to think about my little CupHalfFull.

Anyway, today is my birthday, and I don’t know what it is about birthdays, but I love them.  Getting to indulge a little – treating myself to a donut and a full-fat latte (none of that “skinny vanilla latte” nonsense this morning) and wearing bright red lipstick to work.  Just makes the day feel a little more special when you put a little effort into getting ready 🙂

I had a hard time turning 28 last year – don’t ask me why.  Perhaps it was the idea of finally entering my “late twenties” but I was in a serious funk.  This year, I am excited for 29.  It is my last year as a twenty-something, and I feel really content at where I am in my life.  I live in a beautiful city, with the love of my life.  We have a fabulous apartment in the most gorgeous neighborhood I can imagine.  I have a wonderful new job that fulfills me, dear friends who are always there, and the most loving, encouraging family a girl could ask for.

28 ended up being a good year, but 29 is going to be the best year yet – I can just feel it.

Here’s hoping I blow all my birthday candles out tonight!

I promise, I’ll be back in action very soon, and my little blog will not go neglected 🙂

Heart Garland

It’s Valentine’s Day and I’m all loved up!

I mentioned that we are going to be staying in tonight, making dinner, and probably watching an episode of Dexter (nothing says love like serial killers), and so I’ve been adding little Valentine’s Day touches to our house all week (those heart shaped candles?? amazing).

I have also been working on a mini makeover on our wine hutch this week, and while I was waiting for the paint to dry last night, I also decided that the mirror that hangs above said hutch was begging for a little Valentine’s Day flair.

With no materials for crafting, I got creative, and used an old book.  Have you ever read any of the True Blood Sookie Stackhouse books?  If you haven’t I highly recommend them – VERY entertaining, but they aren’t fine literature… so I sacrificed one of the books for my little heart garland.

Side note: the book I ended up using is called Dead as a Door-nail, so I had to do a little strategic cutting to ensure the title didn’t make it onto any of my hearts.  Yeah, the content doesn’t match the sentiment of this project, but who really cares… right??

Aside from the books, all you need are scissors and tape.  Holla!

I started cutting out hearts like a mad-woman and taping them together willy nilly (Kris hates that saying, I’ve recently learned)…

Now I have two adorable little garlands adorning the mirror in the living room.  They make me smile when I see them, and I won’t feel bad tossing them out tomorrow.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Fun Find: Heart Shaped Candles

How cute are these little heart shaped candles??  I went into Ikea for the two pack of $24 white curtain panels, and snagged these little guys too!

How cute are they???  For $4, I’m totally going to get our use out of these in the next few days!  The problem is they drip like crazy – in the 3 minutes these were burning last night, they already dripped in my cute white tray.  I had a little idea… I grabbed an old book, ripped out a few pages, singed the edges (btw, I’m a total pyro) and laid them out on the bottom of a tray.

It looks adorable, and now I’m not at all worried about the dripping wax!  Win win.

Valentine’s Day Cards

I’m 28, but somewhere in me is still a giddy seven year old girl, who LOVES Valentine’s Day.  I just adore the sweet gesture of giving a Valentines card to the ones you love.

I came across this Valentine’s Day card online, and thought it was the sweetest thing!
Adorable!  This Site will customize it for you depending on the dates you enter (August 1st, 2006 – 2/14/2013 for example) so the whole process couldn’t be easier!
Today is February 1st, and the countdown is on my friends!  Happy ALMOST Valentine’s Day!!

Sunny Saturday

It’s been a warm sunny Saturday here in San Francisco, and for the first time this year, I feel spring in the air. My day started off with a coffee in the park, and a little puppy watching.  The park near my house is THE spot for dog meetup groups, and I could have sat there all day watching the dogs play.

I mean, is there a better way to start the day??  I think not.

On days like this, I want to stay outside as long as I can, so after puppy-patrol at the park, I took a long walk through the neighborhood.  All my friends on the east coast are just settling in for winter, but here in California, I always feel so smug to welcome these 70 degree days in January.  I spotted the first cherry blossoms blooming already, and it made me so happy, because spring really is amazing in San Francisco.

I can’t wait for the cherry blossoms to be blooming in full force.  Across the street from our apartment is a french chateau inspired mansion (yes, mansion – I’m not exaggerating) and it’s flanked in front by four cherry blossom trees.  I’ll have to post a picture of them once they are fully in bloom – it totally makes me feel like I’m in Paris.

Anyway, completely inspired by the sunny warm weather, I picked up a few bunches of tulips, and they are sitting pretty on the coffee table with some new aqua coasters I snagged on sale at ZGallerie (I love how they look like they are lacquered) and my FAVORITE Restoration Hardware catalogs.

Love!

Hope you all are having a lovely weekend!!

Pink and Gold

Ahh, happy Tuesday!  I had a fabulous long weekend in the mountains with my best friend and her family, and I am back, and refreshed!!  On my mind today??  This lovely spring-like weather SF is having… and with that, spring time colors…

Seriously, is there anything better than a color combo of pink and gold?  It’s feminine, delicate, and now that Christmas is over, and Valentine’s day is the next “big holiday” I keep seeing it EVERYWHERE.  I think it’s such a pretty combination for everything.  It’s feminine without being girly.  It’s fresh, and pretty, and just screams Spring is around the corner!!

Some of my favorites??

This chair for starters… Hello beautiful – wouldn’t this make a fabulous desk chair, or dining chair for the head of the table?  Even in a hallway, or best of all, in a huge, lovely walk in closet!

For a party – favors and cake.  Pink and gold are right at home here!!

Fresh flowers and a pretty votive candle are perfect in pink and gold.  Imagine if those garden roses were in a gold vase.  Ugh – I want!

For the daring – pink and gold wallpaper.  Perhaps the sassiest combination of these colors yet!

Gold flatware is making a huge comeback – imagine an Easter table set with these and pretty pink ribbons.

In art, this look is bold, but still very soft at the same time (does that even make sense??)  What a pretty combo with that brass lamp for a home office.

If you aren’t fully committed to pink and gold in your home, this fun wrapping paper would make any friend smile on her birthday…

Or for Valentines Day, this skirt could easily take you to work, as well as to dinner with your honey, or V-Day drinks with girlfriends.

Pink and gold… amazing right??  Get on board!

A New Year and a Clean Slate

Bear with me people… this post is a loonnngggg one.
One of my favorite movies growing up was Anne of Green Gables, and one of our favorite lines in it was, Tomorrow is always fresh with no mistakes in it.  It’s just a nice thought that every day is a fresh start, with so many possibilities.  Right?
Yesterday ended up being vastly different from how we’d planned – shortly after posting about our fabulous NYE agenda, I got a frantic call from Kris, saying he needed to go to the emergency room.  One of the worst moments of my life by far.
While surfing in the morning, the fin on the bottom of his board gouged through his wet-suit, leaving him with a really deep cut.  About six hours and 10 stitches later, they released him from the ER, and now he’s back at home, on the mend. We are just so thankful that there will be no permanent damage, and that he should be back to normal in a few weeks.
Regardless of how 2012 ended, it was a wonderful year, marking so many milestones for us.
It was the year we moved in together… and we didn’t kill one another in our small one bedroom 🙂  Far from it.  Living together has made us closer and stronger, and and it’s made us understand one another on a much deeper level.  It’s funny to think back now to just over a year ago, before moving in – it’s amazing to see how much you change in such a short period of time.   I dug up a few old posts from fall 2011 – I literally laughed out loud while reading through them.  I was so nervous in this one, and so determined to get my way in this one even though it was masked as “compromise”. Sneaky girl.  I would day dream about how our life would change, how our apartment would look, and what was to come.  It turns out, it only gets better.  I love Kris more every day, especially when he brings home flowers, puts a fresh roll of toilet paper on the dispenser without me asking, and fluffs (and chops) the pillows, just how I like.  It’s the little things, amIright?? He’s a keeper.

2012 was also the year I dedicated myself to this blog.  It started out as an outlet for creativity, but it’s ended up introducing me to so many other wonderful bloggers, and this awesome, warm community where I’ve “met” people just like me – who want to talk about shoes or home decor endlessly.  This blog started out as something just for me, and has ballooned into something much larger.  It was back in March where I realized, OMG people actually read this!!  A very surreal moment, but also a really awesome moment.  Aside from using this blog as a forum to talk about the things I’m thinking about, share projects I’m working on, get feedback about ideas I have (those striped walls in the entryway??), this blog is amazing for self preservation.  It’s so fun to look back at my life a year ago – or even two years ago – and remember all the little things I’ve forgetten over time.  Now, more than ever, I am excited to see where Cup Half Full goes in 2013, and how our life continues to change.

2013 is going to be a fabulous year – despite it’s ominous start.  I’ll be starting a new job in a few weeks (more on that later, but let me just say, it’s a hugely wonderful opportunity, and a much needed change).  2013 also might be the year we buy a house.  More on that later as well… I don’t want to jinx anything, but it’s definitely something we talk about.  A lot.  2013 will be a year for giving thanks.  Being thankful every day, giving back, and striving to be our best selves.

Today, we keep joking that at least the accident happened in 2012, and that 2013 will be fresh with no mistakes in it.  On a fresh foot in 2013, we are looking forward to a great year.

Happy New Years Eve!!

Are you ready for NYE??  Staying in or going out??
We are headed out for a big night on the town – drinks and dinner with a big group of friends at this fabulous restaurant called Marlowe.  The SF 7×7 Magazine has their burger on their 2012 list of “Things to Eat Before you Die” and it looks like I’ll be able to cross it off just in time before they come out with their 2013 list!  Ha!
Post dinner, we’ll be dancing 2012 away to a fun 80’s cover band, Tainted Love.  If you live in the Bay Area, chances are you’ve heard of them. It’s going to be an absolute blast, and of course I’m going all out with big blown out hair, fake lashes, and a sparkly dress.

Goodbye 2012, and cheers to a FABULOUS 2013!  Get those New Years resolutions ready!!

Faux Fur – Three Ways

                                 Source

Everyone has an opinion on faux fur, and I for one happen to love it.  I don’t have the heart (or the money) to invest in real fur, and there is something so cozy AND chic about it in the winter.

If I were to try and describe my style in a nutshell, it would say that I go for feminine tailored pieces with classic lines, pops of color, and a few “fashion-y” statement pieces mixed in.  My style icons are Jackie O, Miranda Kerr, Kate Spade, and Victoria Beckham.  I rarely go for the overly blousy, off the shoulder tops, or the boho-chic look – regardless of how much I admire it on others – but this new year, I am going to step out of my comfort zone, and take on faux fur.  A faux fur vest to be precise.

I think if styled correctly, it can work for many occasions, and while definitely on the edgy side of style, I think I can work it into my wardrobe, with the staples I already love to wear.

For Work:

Faux Fur I

Carven sheer long sleeve blouse, $710 / MNG by Mango fake fur vest / True Religion slim fit jeans / KORS Michael Kors high heels / Mulberry zippered tote bag / Juicy Couture swarovski crystal jewelry / Dorothy Perkins two tone earrings / NARS Cosmetics , $31

Grabbing a pair of black skinny jeans, and a soft brown silk blouse will make this dressy enough for work, but comfy enough to run around the office and meet clients for lunch.  The booties will keep my toes warm, and a big bowler or tote will hold all my stuff.  I’m all about simple accessories for daytime, and light pink lips will be flattering on pale winter skin.

For Weekends:

Faux Fur Vest II

Abercrombie & Fitch embroidered shirt / MNG by Mango faux fur vest / Topshop tall jeans / Minnetonka moccasin / Steve Madden / Rebecca Minkoff collar jewelry / Marie Chavez / MICHAEL Michael Kors leather jewelry

Flannel is bigger now than it was in the 90’s, and since it’s tailored – not grunge – it would be perfect with jeans, and flat moccasins to look pulled together while running errands or hanging out with friends.  I love that a few layered chains dress things up, and a studded bag keeps it from looking too “back-woods”.

For Evenings:

Fur Vest III

T By Alexander Wang long sleeve blouse, $325 / MNG by Mango faux fur vest / Topshop faux leather pants / Kate Spade high heel shoes / Coast gold handbag, $65 / Amrita Singh / Teardrop earrings / Warehouse leopard print belt, $29

Keep the underpinnings simple and black.  Faux leather (stretch) leggings dress things up, and simple black silk blouse (with a few buttons left undone) sex it up a little.  Belt the vest with a little leopard belt, and break out some killer pumps and accessories.  This is perfect for date night and bar hopping in the frigid weather.

Glitz and Glam

Soo, after putting together a little inspiration for NYE, things got a little carried away over here… I fell in love.  Hard.  And now I am totally obsessed with this full skirted, sparkly confection from Rare London.  It’s AMAZING – right??

I WISH I had enough time to order it, and have it ship before NYE, but I’m afraid there’s not enough time!!  Anyway, I’ve translated my wishful thinking into a fully styled ensemble for new years.  I’d wear it with nude peep toe pumps to elongate the legs (I have a pair by Stuart Weitzman that are TO DIE FOR), simple accessories to avoid detracting from the dress, and a deep red lip.  Finally, a messy low bun (a la Bridgette Bardot) is the perfect compliment to such a proper party dress.

NYE Sparkles Galore

Rare Opulence , $285 / PeepToe high heels, $120 / River Island , $44 / Chanel white pearl earrings / Black eye makeup

I mean… how fun would it be to party the night away in this number?

Having it cinched at the natural waist is extremely flattering (especially after dinner – am I right ladies??), the short, full skirt would let me twirl the night away, and a v-neck shows of the girls… just a little 🙂

It’s official… I NEED this dress!
