Warm AND Sexy – What to Wear Out, despite the Rain!

The weather has officially cooled off here in San Francisco, and we are expecting some heavy rain this weekend!  Not that it’s going to stop us from going out on Friday night!

While we certainly aren’t going to let the cold wet weather stop us from getting gussied up, my outfit (while not exactly practical) will have to be tweaked slightly, so I’m not completely freezing.  I’m loving this look – unfortunately Pinterest didn’t have a source, so if anyone knows where it came from, I’d LOVE to know!!

Sparkle on!

Having long sleeves will help me keep warm in the cold weather, but the short skirt and sequins says, I’m here for the party!  I put together a similar look for anyone interested in replicating this!  Now all I need is a spray tan, and her hair!  Jealous!

Weekend Trip: Monterey & Carmel

This weekend Kris and I are headed to Carmel by the Sea – a sweet town on the central coast of California.  I am looking forward to foggy mornings and the salty ocean air… unwinding outside of the city, cozying up by a big fireplace, and falling asleep to the sounds of crashing waves.

I’m all packed up, and while these outfits aren’t an exact replica of what I’ve packed, they are darn close, and good inspirations for any cool weather fall getaways you might have planned!

Fireside Drinks at the Moss Beach Distillery:
This is our first stop on our ride down tomorrow.  We’ll be driving along the coast, and stopping at the Moss Beach Distillery in Half Moon Bay for sunset drinks by the firepits, and an early dinner.  This place is supposed to be haunted, and with the cloudy weather we’ve had, I’m looking forward to a great sunset.

Pink top, $73 / Chloé cape coat / Citizens of Humanity jeans / Splendid genuine leather boots / Dooney & Bourke crossbody handbag / Mulberry / Wet Seal

Sea Kayaking:
One of the things that I’m most excited for is sea kayaking on Saturday.  I have a feeling that we are going to get a little wet (even just getting in the Kayak you drip water) so I plan on wearing clothes that will dry quickly, but that will still keep me warm.  I am loving the down vest – I compare it to sleeping with one leg out of the blankets.  You are still warm, but feel refreshed.  Tell me I’m not the only person who does this!

Sea Kayaking

American Apparel t shirt / The North Face north face, $160 / AllSaints / NIKE lightweight shoes / Linda Farrow Luxe

Beach Bonfire:
Unlike summers at the cape, bonfires on the central coast are cold – very cold – and I can pretty much think of nothing worse than cold sand in your toes when it’s about 50 degrees out.  Tall boots are a must for keeping my feet dry and warm, and my leather jacket really is one of the warmest things I own.  A cozy infinity scarf will help keep me toasty and a beanie will help keep my hair under control.  Since we’ll be having dinner beforehand, a slouchy sweater and fun necklace dress up dark jeans a bit.

Bonfire

Touring the Aquarium:
Kris turns into a 10 year old boy at the mention of the aquarium – probably his obsession with surfing (and sharks), but there is no way we are going to Monterey without hitting up the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  If it were up to me, we’d be going on a hike to the thermal springs, but he is pretty dead set on the aquarium.  This means a cozy sweater (belted, so I don’t look like a slob) comfy flats, and a big tote to carry all our “tourist for the day” stuff.

Lady in Red

Red flared pants + blouse

Red pants… are you brave enough to wear a pair??    I am LOVING the look of these looser fitting trousers with a sheer white blouse.  A great red pant is a “nice to have” not a “need to have” in terms of wardrobe essentials, but wouldn’t they be fun to wear??

In middle school, one of my FAVORITE things to wear was a pair of blood red, bell bottom corduroys.  I was thirteen years old and stick thin (seriously… I was fully grown at 5’8″ and but weighed around 96 lbs).  Regardless, I felt awesome in my bright red pants.  As an homage to the 13 year old in me that was brave enough to wear red pants all through the 7th and 8th grade, I put together a few options with how to wear guidelines… take a peek!

Red Pants

Marni wool pants / Marni crepe pants / Theory pants, $1,220 / Pink Tartan red pants, $245 / Mango pleated pants, $72 / Valentino lace up heels / Christian Louboutin leopard print heels / Rupert Sanderson high heel pumps / Ash black boots, $465 / High heel pumps / 3.1 Phillip Lim satchel handbag / Dareen Hakim clutch handbag / Yves Saint Laurent chain link necklace / Miriam Salat resin jewelry / DANNIJO brass jewelry / Kate Spade clip on earrings / Long necklace, $9.62 / Charlotte Russe rhinestone earrings

From left – you better be a brave woman to wear this pair of Theory Stretch Leather Leggings, but if done right with these Valentino laser cut booties, they would be absolutely fabulous.

Red skinny jeans feel really urban and edgy – pair with some motorcycle boots and funky accessories – I especially love this cuff.

In the middle, these mens wear trousers from Mango are the most affordable, and the most similar to the pants in the inspiration.  I just love them for work with a big bag, and neutral shoes.

A cropped version presents the perfect opportunity to show off fun pair of suede peep toe pumps (with bow!)  The cornflower blue in the bangles and the deep sapphire blue of the earrings make the color combo feel more like winter to me.

Finally, leopard print is the perfect compliment to red – a fun pair of peep toe pumps and a chunky statement necklace are amazing for prowling around the town or a swanky dinner on the weekend.

Transitioning Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

I’ve been trying to dress for the seasons (even though San Francisco has little distinction between the seasons), and I saw this cute little outfit on Pinterest (where else?!)

                                    Source

I love the idea of layering a chunky winter sweater over a light floaty skirt.  The juxtaposition makes it interesting, and it’s the PERFECT way to get a few more wears out of your floaty summer dresses and skirts!

I’m going to brunch on Sunday with the girls, so I’ll test this look out then!  All week has been hot and sunny, but we woke up this morning to a layer of fog that just won’t go away.  I am looking forward to diving in to a cozy sweater, and feeling like it’s fall again.

I’m also loving the neutral monotone in this photo – for a similar look, try something like this…

Style Icon: Miranda Kerr

Yes she is a model… a Victoria’s Secret Model… who makes money by wearing lingerie and itty-bitty bikini’s… but dang… she looks just as good in clothes!

The reason I love her so much, is that despite her amazing body, she dresses for real life.  Real life in couture, but still – she isn’t flouncing around town in a crop top and no bra (hello Rihanna and Miley Cyrus).  Also, she sticks with classically tailored pieces, and neutral tones.  You’ll see a lot of nautical pieces with high-waisted trouser jeans, horizontal navy stripes, and plenty of (muted) red, white and blue.
I also love that she embraces feminine silhouettes that nip in at the waist and classic shapes that have been popular for decades.  She could be a Kennedy in either of these dresses!

Her style always seems easily attainable, so while she might be carrying a Valentino tote, and running around town in Manolos, her looks are easy to mimic – who doesn’t have a pair or black pumps that they can pair with dark skinny jeans and a white blouse?!

Her wardrobe is made up of blazers, blouses, and cropped pants with ballet flats, pumps, and large totes – I am obsessed with her style.

The Little Black Skirt

I like to dress for the seasons (even though we don’t have hot summers or snowy winters in San Francisco).  While I definitely have pieces of clothing that are decidedly “summer” or “winter”, I mainly look for staples that I can mix up with other more “seasonal” pieces.  My most versatile pieces are light, and good for layering, so these pieces carry me through the seasons without looking out of place.

First up – the flouncy black skirt.  Most obviously in the summer, it is easy to throw on with sandals, and go to brunch, work, or dinner, but it really is pretty versitile, despite the light fabric.  Take a look at how I’d wear it year round…

Summer:
Pair anything with sleeveless horizontal stripes, and you’ll automatically look ready for the Hamptons.  To me, nothing says summer like a nautical look.  Pick a form fitting (but not tight) tank to tuck into the skirt, and add some style with a bold coral necklace.  My jean jacket pretty much goes wherever I go, since nights are always chilly, and flat gladiators are an easy go-to.  I love the gold on these sandals, to be worn as a neutral (wear gold with anything you’d normally wear nude with).

Autumn:
Crunchy leaves, and crisp sunny weather is my favorite part of fall.  No need for thick layers yet, so I say keep your legs bare as long as you can.  I love the plaid in this shirt – the orange is bright (not burnt), keeping the pattern from being too drab, but the mix of brown and olive prevents you from looking like a pumpkin.  I just got a new pair of ankle booties in black, but I love these brown suede ones with the asymmetrical cut, and the contrast piping.  A leather jacket is a wardrobe staple of mine – it’s warm without being bulky, and you always feel pulled together – even if you are throwing it over jeans.

Winter:
Winters here are rainy – not snowy – but it still gets very cold, especially around the holidays.  I love the idea of dressing this relatively casual skirt up with a luxe silk blouse, and a winter white coat with feminine details.  With fewer hours of daylight, go for darker colors across the board – dark lips, deep onyx studs, dark knit tights, and tall boots (Christian Louboutins… a girl can dream).  This whole outfit would also look amazing in monochromatic black (very devil wears prada)… what do you think?

Spring:
With spring comes lighter colors, floral prints, and a few unseasonably warm days.  I love the dusty rose in this blazer, which would is another piece that can pretty much take you through the year.  Simple accessories make this work appropriate, and these cute booties would work as well as a nude or black pump!  Isn’t this outfit kind of perfect for Valentines Day (at work) or night (a few extra buttons undone)? I think so!

The Statement Making Non-statement Necklace

Yesterday I wrote about a chunky chain link bracelet, so while we are on the topic of jewelry, let’s talk about dainty, delicate necklaces…

I’ve been really into chunky statement necklaces lately because it’s an easy way to be a little fashion forward, or throw a bright pop of color into an otherwise conservative / boring / safe outfit.  When I’m not dressing up my outfits with an in your face necklace, I like to opt for something delicate that can make as huge of a statement as something flashy.

They are great alone, or layered for a more bohemian look. My favorites are delicate but unique, and I’ve discovered that Etsy is a great source to find delicate gold (or gold coated) necklaces at extremely affordable prices.

I love this pyrite and gold leaf necklace.  The gold colored stone is so cool, and I love that you can customize the charm with your initials!  It would be cute as a gift for yourself, or as a personalized gift for a friend!

ZionShore does a lot of pieces with quartz, and I love the small smokey beads on some of the pieces as much as I love the larger single set stones… so pretty

How adorable is this little cold coral charm necklace?!  The length of the chain is a bit longer (20″) so its perfect for layering with shorter chains.  I’ve also been on a coral kick this year after making my Sea Fan shadowbox DIY earlier this year…

This next one isn’t gold, but I love the patina on it from the brass.  This one would make such a cute gift for a friend who just moved to another state, and it isn’t just made for Californians (although it is one of the most iconically shaped states).

Finally, a simple necklace that is as pretty as they come.  You could wear this to an interview, your wedding, on vacation, and running errands – a necklace you’de never take off.  So perfect.

What do you think?  Are you a statement necklace girl, or do you go for the delicate charms?

Chain Link Bracelet via Cupcakes and Cashmere

Is anyone else a huge of a fan of Emily Schuman – author of the popular blog (and now book), Cupcakes and Cashmere??

For those of you unfamiliar, go check out her blog immediately – you’ll learn that she is pretty much the modern day Martha Stewart.  Wait, scratch that… a gorgeous, utterly fashionable, modern day version of Martha Stewart.  From home decor to personal style, cooking, or hunting thrift stores, she’s your gal!

Anyway, before I get too off topic singing her praises, I’ve noticed an adorable micro-pave chain link bracelet that she often wears.

                                            Up close:

                               From a Distance:

This bracelet can be dressed up or down, and is a funkier, more modern take on the classic gold chain bracelet.  It’s more chunky, and the pave stones make it unique.   It’s pretty much love.

After lusting over it for a while now, I did a little hunting, and I finally found it… at JCrew of all places!!  They certainly aren’t giving it away at $125, but I really do love it.

What do you think – is it worth the splurge??

Making Fall Trends Wearable

Finally!  The stores have updated their merchandise with all the fun new fall trends, but to be honest, some of these trends look hard to wear, severe, and unflattering.  For the non-model types like myself, there are definitely easy ways to incorporate some of these trends into your fall wardrobe… take a look at some of my favorites…

Modern Romance:
This look is all about modest necklines, embellished details, and feminine touches.  Lace, ruffles, and bows are everywhere, but in non-girlish, sophisticated silhouettes of course.  The peter pan collar was made popular on little girls’ party dresses (god knows I had plenty growing up) but when they are touched up with rhinestone details or intricate black embroidery, they are nothing but “adult”.  Go monochromatic with navy suede booties and a navy trench dress, or nude strappy sandals with a nude lace dress for a fancy dinner out.  With so many grown-up ways to wear bows, lace, and sweet collars again, who can resist?!

Vintage style dress / Mango embroidery dress, $97 / Stella McCartney ruffle front dress / Tory Burch bow shirt / Pink blouse, $22 / Peter pan collar blouse / By Malene Birger peter pan shirt / ASOS embellished top / Jil Sander Navy / Oasis lace top, $23 / Ash tall suede boots / Oasis shoes, $40 / Elie Saab heel sandals / Dolce&Gabbana tote handbag / Dorothy Perkins bow clutch / Silver brooch, $19

Ox Blood:
Isn’t that just a horrific name for such an awesome, rich color?  Call it what you will – ox blood… burgundy… tomato, to-mah-toe.  This color is everywhere this fall, and I’m sold.  From deep red handbags, to stacks of bangles, dark shiny lips, and faux ruby cocktail rings.  I am seriously loving it all.  Especially both of these skirts – one is full and feminine with super flattering inverted pleats (that means you’ll get a full skirt without the bunching), and I’m somewhat obsessed with the peplum pencil skirt, since it’s one of the most flattering trends in ages… both skirts would be so perfect with some textured tights, and cute booties…

Derek Lam / Pea coat, $56 / Pleated skirt / Dorothy Perkins / DKNY high heels / Rebecca Minkoff leather clutch / Urban expressions handbag / Vintage jewelry, $685 / Antik Batik , $82 / La Mer watch / Eyeglass

Baroque Chic:
Let me preface this by saying, this is DEFINITELY an evening look, so unless you work in a super avant garde industry, save these pieces for after-work activities only.  Let’s be honest, the pants are going to be VERY hard to pull off, but if you’ve got the body (and attitude) for them, dive right in.  I’m loving the embellished tops, and accessories most of all since they are obviously the easiest way to incorporate the ornate over the top baroque pieces into your fall wardrobe.  The white a-line skirt is also another great alternative if you want to dip your toe into this trend, since the creme is clean and simple, despite the busy pattern inlay.

What are some of your favorite trends this fall?

Black Rimmed Glasses

My eyesight has been pretty much perfect my entire life, but living working in an office, and staring at a computer screen all day has taken it’s toll, and I am beginning to think that I may need glasses.

I started coming to this conclusion when it became hard to read street signs from halfway down the block.  I chalked it up to a glare on the sign.  Most recently, the problem is with seeing things at night, and I notice that all the lights are much more twinkly than I remember – while extra twinkly lights are very pretty, it does not make for a good situation when I’m the chosen driver at night.  The conclusion?? My eyes are getting old.  Sad Face.

While this has been one of the first signs that I’m not the youngest spring chicken in the coop anymore, (well this, and the fact that I pulled my back out for the first time this year) the realization that I need glasses is particularly not good news since I hate the idea of wearing glasses.  Unfortunately for me, I hate the idea of putting my finger in my eye more.  Sooo… glasses it is!

Since my theory that my eyesight will revert to its 20/20 status if I wait long enough isn’t working out in my favor, I’ve been giving some thought to what type of glasses I might like.  Who knew there were so many options out there!!  Should I go frameless (to avoid distracting people from your face too much)?  Wire frame?  Round?  Square? Tapered? Narrow? Tortoise? Patterned?  There are a lot of options, and it seems that everyone has an opinion.

While I’m not totally sure what I DO want, I know what I DON’T want.  I don’t want to look like an old lady (most importantly) and I don’t want want to be constantly aware that I am wearing glasses.  One of the things that annoys me the most about glasses is when you wear small frames, and can see the edge of the frame in your periphery.  That will not work.  This is why I’m thinking of jumping on the larger frame bandwagon.

Thick rimmed glasses are EVERYWHERE, and with a larger lens, they are not only functional, but I actually think they are are cute!  Am I just buying into the hype?

I mean this girl looks pretty happy in them…

And Scarlet Johanson thinks they are pretty cool too…

A few girls on my team at work (who are all 22 by the way) keep telling me that thick frames are “totally in”.  I believe one of them said, (and I quote), “I even have a fake pair that I wear on days that I want to look smart.”  Oh sweetie… add that to the list of things to not say to your boss.  I am judging you.

22 year olds aside, I think I might try on a few pairs to form my own opinion.  My mom had a large pair of glasses when we were little, and as all fashion statements do, they went out of style and have boomeranged back again.  I should probably invest in these now, so I can become the cool mom and swap them out in 15 years when my kids notify me that I am “SOOO 2012.”

More updates on the glasses situation to come…
