Wedding Style Guide: Black Tie Wedding

Ahh the black tie wedding (not to be mistaken with the evening wedding) – a black tie affair is possibly one of the most difficult of all weddings to dress for as a guest.  While a knee length LBD would do the trick in a pinch, a black tie wedding is the only occasion where a floor length gown is acceptable.  Always during the evening, it’s totally appropriate for opt for a glamorous floor skimming number – break out your grandmother’s cocktail rings, and sparkly chandelier earrings, because black tie means glam all the way!

Old Hollywood Glamour:

Black Tie Wedding I

Yes, this is Oscar de la Renta, so for the masses this first dress is really just a day-dream, but with this look in mind, head to Bloomindales and seek out a sparkly gold number like this one.  The trick to making gold look expensive is to watch the sparkle and the tone.  A too gold color looks gaudy, and too sparkly conjures images of a Vegas showgirl – look for a muted Champagne gold, and you’ll be good to go.  Since the dress is the statement, stay away from more sparkle in the jewelry – pearls are a classic choice.  Finish the look with red lips and red nails – neutral eye makeup and simple hair will be perfect.

New Hollywood Glamour:

Black Tie Wedding II

Emerald green has been a HUGE trend in the past several years, with many a-list actresses donning substantial gemstone jewelry for red carpet events.  Jump on the bandwagon because this rich green is flattering on everyone and brings to life a simple black silhouette.  Don’t be fooled by this dress’ demure neckline – the back opens up to show a little skin (tastefully of course).

Midsummer Nights Dream:

Black Tie Wedding III

Yep, this next look reminds me of the Shakespeare play, because of the romance.  The floaty chiffon is romantic (and flattering), and you’ll stand out from all the other navy and black dresses in this pale pink number.  There is nothing like gold and pale pink to compliment one another, so be sure that your accessories – from strappy heels to dangly earrings are gold toned and sparkly.

Summer 2012 Wedding Gowns

I always look forward to the release of the next season’s wedding dresses.  I find the world of bridal couture completely fascinating, but I have to say, I am not loving a lot of the Summer collections.  Some of the trends are WAY too trendy – I fear there will be many brides looking back and saying, what was I thinking?!

The designers I’m drawn to this season are the ones embracing feminine silhouettes, interesting draping, and floaty fabrics.

Watters:
First up… Watters – they were actually one of my favorite designers that my sister tried on when she was shopping for her wedding dress.  The bonus??  These dresses look extremely high-end, but in the realm of wedding dresses, are actually quite affordable (dresses range from $2K – $4K).

Watters Beverly Hills: I love the variation of fabrics, and the draping – it’s unique without being over the top, taking a classic silhouette and making it stand out.  I’d prefer a deeper sweetheart at the bust, but this is so beautiful it’s hard to critique!

watters santa barbara wedding dress
Watters Santa Barbara:  This silk taffeta dress fits narrowly through this hips, which is flattering on the waist – a ball gown can be difficult to wear depending on the skirt.  Too many gathers near the waist makes you look bulky, but the flat lay and the flared skirt keep this slimming and streamlined. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t LOVE pockets?!  The belt has got to go… something more delicate and less bulky!

watters 2012 napa wedding dress
Watters Napa:  Oh the romance – silk organza is so floaty and light, and the way that the skirt has subtle pick-ups creates volume without poof.  I’m not loving the bolero, or the mauve sash, but both are easily removable.  I imagine this dress with a floral belt – possibly in champagne for contrast.  Can we also talk about this bodice?  The intricately embroidered detail and defined sweetheart are both so pretty.  LOVE.

Vera Wang:
In addition to Watters dreamy confections, Vera Wang tops my list for Summer Couture designs.  Cliche? Yes.  Pricy?  OMG, I don’t even want to know.  BUT, her attention to detail, and unique embellishments remain unparalleled by any other bridal designer.

Vera Wang Diana: Holy ruffled skirt… does this look like a huge blossoming flower, or what?!  The raw cut edge keeps the skirt contemporary, while the silhouette is traditional all the way.  Another love??  The bodice is pleated, NOT ruched, minimizing bulk, and accentuating the waist.  Finally, that twisted belt.  So simple, but so pretty.

Vera Wang Gemma:  I am so in love with this dress, I’ve actually posted about it before (original obsession here).  The asymmetrical pleated bodice is SO pretty – looks amazing on this thin model… not so sure it’s for me… but the cut organza hem is so pretty – it looks like a cloud or flowers, or some ethereal combination of both.  Dreamy!

Wedding Style Guide: Evening Wedding

To continue this series of posts, I wanted to talk about evening weddings.  Black-tie optional is something you see on a TON of invitations.  This translates to cocktail-length evening wear.  Do not take “black-tie optional” to mean “floor length gown”.  Aside from the bride (and maybe the bridesmaids) you’ll end up being the only other person there in a floor length ensemble.  It’s a “don’t” for sure.

My guidelines for a black-tie optional evening wedding are simple, and here are a few inspirations to get you going!

Pretty in Pink:

Evening Wedding I

This look could possibly double as a late afternoon to evening wedding.  Even though its short, the color keeps the whole look sweet, so you’ll avoid looking like a tart.  A few rules – keep the footwear classic.  A t-strap shoe is perfect here – strappy or sparkly heels will put this over the top for sure.  Keep all the accessories in the same color family – golds, rose golds, cremes, and tonal pink is pretty together.  This look is for sipping bubbly under the stars, and dancing to a live band’s Frank Sinatra re-productions.

Red Hot Ruffles:

Evening Wedding III

This is DEFINITELY a dress to be worn strictly after dark.  A one shouldered, ruffly red number is in no way appropriate for a non-evening wedding.  Art deco jewlery, an embossed crocodile (or faux croc) clutch, and classic pumps accessorize the look.  Just be sure to bring a pashmina for your shoulders as you leave!  This look is perfect for a hotel wedding – picture a grand ballroom, chandeliers galore, and champagne towers.

**A note of caution: make sure the skirt falls just above your knees – any shorter and this is not a wedding look anymore!

Floaty Full Skirt:

Evening Wedding II

Oh the romance of a wedding… and what is more romantic than a full skirt and lace??  A soft dove color allows you to be more bold with bright accessories.  Nude pumps will elongate the legs, and a sweet embellished sweater will keep the chill off at night.  This look is perfect for sipping martinis at the country club’s bar, and twirling on the dance floor with your date.

Final words of advice??  Follow the cardinal rules and you will be fine!

  1. NO White.  If the pale pink is even close to white, wear something else!
  2. Nothing TOO short.  If you wouldn’t want your grandmother to see you in it, chances are your friend getting married doesn’t want her grandmother to see you in it either.
  3. Do not try to outshine the bride.

Yellow Polka-dot Bikini – Fashion Inspiration

It was an itsy, bitsy, teeny, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini, that she wore for the first time today…
I’m pretty sure that ever since that song was released, the sweetly-sexy yellow bikini has been in production around the clock.  Taking inspiration from the spring and summer runways, along with the every traditional retro bikini cuts, I’ve been on the hunt for an itsy bitsy bikini of my own.
Apparently Victoria’s Secret got the memo!!  Whether it has a ruffled bottom or a truly itsy-bitsy triangle top, I am facing a very difficult decision narrowing down between these teeny bikinis!
yellow polka dot bikini!
I am loving the retro vibe from this sweetheart halter, and the mix of stripes and dots is so cute!  The removable strap for tanning is also a little TOO convenient!
The yellow polka-dot bikini gets an update here with neon yellow ruffles and string ties and gold polka dots – a sassy statement for any beach or pool!
Itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini
A true classic – the tie on the top gives this bikini a nautical feel, and what girl doesn’t want a little push up padding to help things along??
The ruffled edges on this little number would work well to enhance a small bust, however I’m not loving the sea foam green ties on the bottoms… nothing a little snip of the scissors can’t fix!

With a thick halter strap, and a thick band below the bust, this bikini will stay where you put it – perfect for a little vollyball on the beach – just be sure to double knot those bottoms!

Spring has Sprung

The sun is out, the weather has been warming, and you know what that means!  It’s time to break out the sundresses, sandals, and light weight clothing!  It also makes me REALLY want to go shopping with all the cute spring lines hitting the stores.  The color of the season??  Tangerine Tango!
Pantone – the authority on color – voted, and here it is in all it’s summery glory!  Now that you’ve seen it, you will start seeing it everywhere!  I took to Polyvore to create an inspiration board for this color – if Tangerine Tango doesn’t scream summer, I don’t know what does!

Paris Vacation: Outfit Inspiration

Kris and I have been toying with the idea of various vacations this year – on the table is Bali, Thailand, or Paris (right out of left field in comparison to the other two, right??)  For whatever reason, this year I have been totally romanced by the idea of eating cheese, drinking wine, getting lost in the Parisian streets, and sitting out late at a cafe in the warm summertime air (those that know me, know that my idea of a vacation entails a suitcase of bikinis, a beach, and many MANY pina coladas – thus, my daydreams of Paris are a total 180 for me).

While we continue to debate the options, I continue to daydream about our hypothetical trip to Paris.  Half of the excitement for me is imagining where will we go, what will we do, and most importantly, what I will wear!  When I think of Paris, I think of black and white, Audrey Hepburn, stripes galore, cute little flats and kitten heels, classic silhouettes, and feminine details – full skirts, peplum, accented waistlines, fresh colors, and impeccable tailoring.  No bohemian maxi dresses here!  No abstract prints or floaty tops… and nothing TOO trendy.  Here are a handful of looks I’ve put together for a jaunt in Paris!

The evening calls for black, anything elegant, and something with a little mystery.  I’m envisioning the scene with pressed white table tops, candles, fairly lights, and fancy french food.  I’m thinking of twirling in a plaza to a small ensemble playing La Vie en Rose.  I’m thinking of sitting atop a wall at the Jardins de Trocadero and watching the Eiffel Tower glitter at night… moonlit strolls along the Siene, and lingering kisses in quiet alleyways.

With warm summer days, I imagine that there will be plenty of picnics on the lawns in front of the Eiffel Tower.  A bottle of rose, a large picnic blanket, and a wide assortment of meats, cheeses, fresh baguettes should keep us plenty occupied.  I’ll want something light with the heat, and practical for sitting on the ground.  Full skirts and cropped pants in summery colors will fit the bill here.

Wandering the city streets, cafes, and museums, I’ll want some combination of fashion and function. Low heels or sweet flats will keep my feet happy, while florals, wide leg trousers, and short skirts will keep the look dressy.  No running shoes and fanny packs here my friends!

Spring Fashion: Neon Pink

                         Jcrew Spring/Summer 2012

Neon Pink is making a comeback kids – back from the 80’s and hotter than ever, its a huge spring trend that you won’t be able to ignore!  Not that I can pull off a neon pink blouse with neon pink lace pants, but if Jcrew says it’s all the rage, then you KNOW neon is going to be making a splash.

The look above is for the ultra fashion forward, but for the rest of us fashion minions, here are a few baby steps to making neon work for you!

Neon Top:
neon with lace
Pair a hot pink slouchy t-shirt (LA cool) with a sweet lace skirt for a weekend appropriate brunch with girlfriends look.

Neon Mini:

Or… take the above concept and flip-flop it – “demure” lace on top, and shocking pink mini on the bottom – perfect for a night out dancing.  Note: NOT appropriate for daytime.

Neon Waist:

Give your work look a splash of neon with a skinny belt – to be worn with high waisted trousers, a pencil skirt, or to cinch in a cardigan sweater.

Sexy Neon:
Neon pink ruffles
Take neon sexy all the way with a backless ruffled dress – wear it on vacation (a total compliment to a fabulous tan), or just feel like you are vacation trotting about town.

Neon Tote:

Carry it around – a bold neon pink stripe brings this otherwise very safe bag to life.

A fun DIY: neon tipped pumps.  Grab a can of spray paint, and treat your toes to a fun pop of pink.

Neon Skinnies:

Hot pink skinny jeans is another statement for the adventurous dressers – another side note: if your legs, hips, and/or thighs are your problem areas, do not try to pull this off

Neon Lips:

Wake up your face with some bold pink lips – minimal eye make-up required, so this is the perfect look for days when you are running late

Brunching, lunching, and shopping… here I come!  How can you not feel pretty and set for spring in this simple dress (yes it’s a dress – not a skirt).  LOVE.

Backless Dresses: Fashion Inspiration

I’ve been totally wowed with some of the super sexy backless dresses I’ve seen – most are modest in the front, and total sex goddess in the back.  Mama always said, “only show-off one part of your body at once”… not sure she had these little numbers in mind with that advice!
With the weather warming, and a possible tropical vacation on my horizon, I can’t get the idea of a sassy backless dress to go with my tan (spray tan, but still)so I’ve decided to do a little outfit recreation – enjoy!

Vintage Photographs

I just got totally sucked into a new Tumblr blog today – Honey.  This site had amassed so many gorgeous vintage photographs, I just had to share.

There is something so nostalgic in some of these that makes me so jealous of my parents’ and grandparents’ generations.  I am so in love with the fashion – the feminine details, the curvy figures, the big glasses, the high waists and full skirts, the hats, the gloves, and the pearls (oh my).

Enjoy some pretty pics to make it through the mid-day Thursday slump.

Wedding Style Guide: Day to Evening

Obviously there are some cardinal rules when dressing for a wedding – don’t wear white, and don’t try to outshine the bride. Easy enough, but what do you wear to a wedding when the invite asks for Hampton’s Chic, Creative Black Tie, Wine Country Elegant, After Five, or Festive Cocktail?  I’ve even heard of Texas Black Tie, which leaves me to wonder, who comes up with these definitions?!  Regardless, I am dedicating a good portion of my Wedding Season Survival Guide on what to wear.

Since most weddings run from late afternoon to evening, I’ve always struggled to balance finding something dressy enough for a party into the night without looking garish during the early hours of the event.  Ever worn something black and sparkly during the day?  Awkward…

Retro Inspiration: Full Flared Skirts

Day to Night Wedding

Nothing says “daytime appropriate” like a pop of color, but nothing says “party time” like a full swingy skirt.  Get the best of both worlds by looking for fun full skirted dresses with lady-like lengths.  The ideal is to have it hit at or just above the knee.  Any shorter, and it starts getting too sexy for a wedding (Remember those cardinal rules? Don’t try to outshine the bride).  A hat with a full brim is the perfect accessory for an outdoor wedding.  Sunny afternoons in the spring and summer can get warm, so come prepared to stay shaded and cool (in addition to looking utterly chic).  A black and white striped clutch gives the whole look a sweet Parisian feel while the sparkle in the accessories give enough glitz to carry you well into the night.

Wear this to: a breezy garden or wine country wedding

Prepster Inspiration: Coastal Stripes

day to night wedding II

Horizontal stripes are universally flattering – contrary to popular belief.  Forget that old wives tale and embrace stripes, because when done right they contour the body, and accentuate a woman’s figure.  Look for color, and stripes with varied widths.  Breaking up the pattern is what makes stripes flattering, and when the smaller stripes are focused at the waist, and larger stripes are focused on areas that should be larger (bust and hips), you’ll be able to visually create the illusion of a perfect hourglass.  A word of caution:  do not attempt stripes on a form fitting dress.  Unless you are Megan Fox, that probably will not be flattering.  Choose a more forgivving cut – a-line skirts work well here.

Keep the look preppy and pretty with bright nails and lips, oversize sunglasses (Jackie O all the way) and simple accessories.  A good mantra: What would Kate Spade do?

Wear this to: a seaside wedding or yacht club fete (note: I did NOT say “beach wedding”)

Contemporary Inspiration: Color Blocking

day to night wedding III

Yes I said it! Color Blocking, ok?  Not a huge fan of this trend, so I have a few guidelines to keep you looking classic and prevent you from looking back and saying, What the hell was I thinking?!

Rule #1: Look for variations of colors within the same family (Think nudes, pale pinks, and coral… or mint, aqua, and turquoise)  Do not go after bright clashing combos of Leprechaun Green and Magenta – you will regret it, and you will find the photographer editing you out of all the pictures.

Rule #2: Look for feminine shapes and details.  Be sure your waist is accentuated to avoid a severe mod look (remember you can only choose one trend at a time… it’s a wedding, not NY Fashion week).  Floaty fabrics are a bonus here – it softens the multiple colors.

Rule #3:  Since the details are in the dress, keep accessories simple.  Golds and nudes will be your friends here to avoid adding ANOTHER color to the ensemble.  If you are youthful or fashion forward, considering spicing it up with a complimentary pop of color in your nail polish or bracelets.  Aqua is a great pairing with the coral here.

Wear this to: A golf club wedding, or on the rooftop of a chic downtown hotel.
