Yes, Home Decor now makes me excited

Framed Blue Reflections Print

So a few months ago… it feels like years now… I was day-dreaming about our soon to be love nest, and moving into the new apartment.

I had posted that “compromise is like brussels sprouts” and noted how I was looking for decor that reflected both of our tastes – contemporary (a nice way of saying modern) and classic (a more “modern” way of saying traditional), HA!

Well, I had been lusting over this extremely reasonable print by Ballard Designs, and today, I finally pulled the trigger and bought it!  In seven to ten business days it will be mine, all mine!  I will have to post of a picture of it in our apartment that is slowly but surely coming together (slowly being the operative word here).

Wish I were Here!!

The high today in San Francisco is 50 degrees.  The to-do list at work is about a mile long.  One of my client’s refuses to answer my emails.  It’s 10am and I could really go for a pina colada on THIS beach.  Dear scientists of the world… please figure out this time travel thing a little faster, and transport me to this beach in Samara, Costa Rica right… now.

With this one…

New Decorating Obcession: Topiaries

My mom has a rule – for every arrangement involving fake or dried flowers, you HAVE to have at least two fresh arrangements.  While this is her rule, and not a universal rule, I think it’s a good one to go by.  Have you ever been to one of those discount craft / decor stores – Michaels, or Home Goods – and thought, “wow, they have some nice stuff in here but it seems kind of tacky”?  Well… its all the fake flowers and fake plants… trust me on this one… I’ve spent some time thinking about it.

That said, keeping fresh flowers on hand can really add up – while you can pick up a bouquet at the store for $10 – $15, they will be dead by the end of the week, so that is a minimum of $40 – $60 per month on flowers.  To some, this might be pocket change, but for me, this adds up to drinks with a good friend, a new pair of shoes, or my annual subscription of UsWeekly.

This brings us back to seeking simple, inexpensive solutions for a fresh look in your home.  I’ve found that topiaries are a great option.  They are small, easy to keep up, relatively inexpensive, and look tres chic!  If that’s not enough, they have 10x the lasting power of flowers, and bring a pop of freshness to any room.  Honestly, if you took care of them, they could last years, but let’s say they cost $8 each, and last 4 months… that will cost you $1 a week for two.  Look how amazing they look!

MY NEW KATE SPADE BAG IS HERE!!!

This is a TERRIBLE photo taken with my phone, but I am so excites about it, I don’t even care!  I am in LOVE.  A personal note to Kate:

Your bags are amazing… I have an official addiction, so please stop making them.  I am slowly going broke, and will be homeless living in a box, but with a shelf full of beautiful handbags.

Love,
Becky

Gift Wrap IS an Art!

With Christmas just around the corner, I have been spending quite a bit of time wrapping presents…  I’m not the most skilled wrapping expert, so a huge high-five to the internet for providing such a wealth of information around perfectly creased paper, and an array of bow tying tactics.

In an article aggregated by one of my favorite bloggers Joanna Goddard (of Cup of Jo), Chatelaine.com explains one of the easiest and most beautiful ways to tie a bow – step by step!  Worth the extra 2 minutes it takes – trust me!

Click here to be a fellow bow tying expert…

Also, OhHappyDay has published several fun articles with styling tips and where to buy guides for each – ingenious!!

Holiday Traditions: Christmas Tree Hunting

Every year since I was a child, my family would go and cut our Christmas tree down.  We’d all bundle up, drive up to the mountains and chop down the PERFECT tree.  Rain or shine.  One year, there was a terrible storm, and the rain was coming down in buckets.  We ate our little picnic in the car, chose a tree right off the side of the road, and were in and out in 5 minutes.

I happen to love this tradition – picking up a tree from the home depot just doesn’t have the same appeal.  And you can’t beat the smell of a freshly cut tree – amazing.  I still go with my parents, and their traditions have become mine.  My mom sent me this note today:

Daddy and I have been cutting down our tree from the first year we were engaged and will probably continue to until we’re sitting in a convalescent home with drool bibs! Even then, we might try to sneak out with a saw or small hatchet..ha ha!”

Is that not the cutest thing in the world?  While Kris and I aren’t engaged, I hope we are the same way, and have our own yearly rituals that we continue with our kids, and even after our kids are grown.

Bad little Fawn

That is something my mom would always say… and it’s true.  As the “season of giving” begins, I happened to come across the Kate Spade sample sale last night… it was so very bad.  What was I supposed to do?!

I had to get one… honestly I wanted three, but with a custom sofa order in to Pottery Barn, and the multitude of other expenses looming from the move and my new gig as part-time interior designer, I had to limit myself to just one.  And it is GORGEOUS!!!

The ultra large, crocodile embossed patent leather… yummy… and the color is called Goose – how cute is that?!  Dear Kate, you have outdone yourself again.  Love, Becky

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

Ahh the holidays…  I LOVE this time of year, when the air gets really cold and still, and at night you see twinkling fairy lights in all the windows as you pass by.  I WISH it snowed here, but honestly I’m such a whimp, I could never imagine shoveling the driveway before work.

Today is so cold and foggy – the perfect day to curl up and watch all my favorite Christmas movies, but alas, I am at work.  Tonight, we are headed downtown for a little pre-Christmas shopping event.  We are so lucky, and spoiled – we are meeting one of our sales reps at Bloomingdales, and we get to pick out a new pair of swanky holiday shoes.  Lucky us!  In addition to being spoiled rotton, I am very much looking forward to seeing the tree and the ice rink in Union Square.  That will get me geared up for the holidays – some mulled wine or a hot toddy would be amazing too 🙂

Speaking of delicious holiday drinks I found these fabulous mulling spices at Williams Sonoma – they are amazing in mulled wine, but I have also found that seeping them in simmering water gives your house this yummy “been baking all day” smell.  I think I will surprise Kris tonight with a delicious smelling house, and a bowl of ice cream.  I know how to win him over 🙂

Funny story here – one of my all time favorite bloggers, Jordan Ferney is from San Francisco, and I believe her husband is a photographer/artist… I wonder if this is him or if its just an uncanny coincidence…

…And in the Spirit of Thanksgiving

Kris gets one too!

Let me back up the story for a second.  For my birthday back in March, I asked Kris for the new iPhone 5 when it came out.  Well after months of delays, Apple announces that the iPhone 5 won’t be out for months still, so they are releasing the 4S.  Same thing to me!  8 months later, I get my shiny new present – just a week before Kris’ birthday.  I told him he couldn’t get one for himself once I got mine for my birthday present, becuase then it wouldn’t be as special.  He does not quite understand this, but after having an outdated flip phone for years, I just want to be the one with the cool new gadget for a while.

Anyways, being the sweet thing that he is, he agreed not to get it for himself…

Little does he know, I am getting him the black one for his birthday…  he is going to be SO surprised.  I cannot WAIT to see the look on his face.  Priceless.
