Campaign Furniture

LonnyMag

Gorgeous right?!  These pieces showcase clean lines, sturdy hardware, and compliment both traditional and modern decor.  I wanted to know the background behind this style of furniture, and thanks to Wikipedia, I now know more than I ever wanted to about campaign furniture.

Simply put, campaign furniture specifically refers to any furniture designed to be easily broken down and packed up to carry on the march (“the march” as in… with the military).  Despite the contemporary feel, this type of furniture can actually date back to the time of Julius Caesar, however the pieces here are more reminiscent of late 18th, 19th and early 20th century British military.  Because of the nature of campaign furniture, you’ll often find these pieces as trunks and desks, however there are some fabulously styled dressers and side tables that I am IN LOVE WITH.

The hitch?  Campaign furniture can be pricey… I’ve spent some time trying to hunt down a great campaign fixer-upper, and unfortunately, all the consignment shops, antique shops, and vintage furniture shops all know the value of these pieces – no matter how beat up they are!  What’s a girl to do?  Get crafty… that’s what!

Do you like this cute blue campaign dresser?  Well guess what, this piece is from Ikea, and thank’s to Jenny at  LittleGreenNotebook, you don’t have to shell out some big bucks for this awesome look!

Can I Live Here… Please?

I have just discovered Lonny – a gorgeous online site with design inspiration, but the best part (yes it gets better) is their online magazine!!  I want to live in it’s pages.  I think I’m in love.

They have the standard site that is organized by category (living room, bedroom, kitchen, etc), where the photos are displayed in a gallery format – just browse and click.  It’s very visual, and very lovely.  In addition to their site, they have a digital magazine where you virtually flip through the pages – very tactile.  It would be fabulous on an ipad, because honestly there is just something so therapeutic about flipping through the pages of a magazine.  Right?!  New LOVE.

Living Room Inspiration

While I have made a lot of progress on the apartment, the living room is pretty much at a standstill from my last post about the living room “transformation” (aka hanging curtains).  The living room has pretty much turned into my work-space, where I sand, spackle, buff, prime, and paint.  I’ve been logging some serious hours painting the bedroom furniture (armoire and nightstands) and since I’m putting in the time, I’ve decided to replace the hardware.

I don’t think I mentioned it before, but this furniture belonged to my grandmother, so obviously I adore it for sentimental reasons, but also just love the look.  The pieces have very classic lines and lovely details that you just can’t find anymore.  They are sturdy and gorgeous, however the original hardware was NOT gorgeous.  They looked identical to these:

That said, the handles left the drawers with two holes, and though I hunted high and low for different pulls, my grandmother had splurged for custom size handles… what did this mean for me? It was going to cost me some serious money to custom order 14 individual handles in varying lengths.

Solution?? Plug the holes… and get updated single knob pulls like this:
Lugarno Knob
Thus ensued my Tim the Toolman Taylor escapades in the living room.  That said, the project is nearing the finish line which means that the armoire, both nightstands, and all twelve drawers will no longer be hanging out in the living room.  Hooray!  I’ve got one more nightstand and the armoire to sand and paint, but it should be an quicker process than the drawers! (knock on wood)

So once the bedroom furniture project is finished… then what? Great question… once it’s finished and back in the bedroom, I get to have fun finishing the living room.  Much of the big pieces are in place, but its the little touches, that need some work.  One thing that has really started to bug me is the rug.  We have a lovely rug in there right now, but its just too small for the scale of the room.  New rug is a must, and I am loving the more contemporary lattice patterns (shocker, right?!)  I spent some time putting together an inspiration board for the living room, and while there are a few things that can (and probably will) change, I think this is pretty close to what the finished product will be:

My goal here was to keep the focus on how light and airy the room is.  I’m sticking to a palate of light colors – tans, grays,  yellows, and creme.  The best part? Many of the things in my inspiration board, we already have!

The coffee and side tables came as a set, and are made of dark black brown wood – very similar to the table in the photograph.  Nothing earth shattering going on there, but the set is sturdy, functional, and there is enough modernity to appease my better half.

The sofa – right now, my love seat is a two cushion version of the below, and we have been on the hunt for a second larger sofa to replace Kris’ love seat from his bachelor days.  When I first moved to the city, my mom gifted me lamps identical to the brushed aluminium below – classic and simple, and I still love them 5 years later.

As I mentioned before, I got four panels of silk curtains from Bed Bath & Beyond (a total steal), and we ordered this exact painting from Ballard Designs.  I’m actually a bit embarrassed to admit we ordered art online without seeing it in person, but it really is gorgeous.  For the size and quality, this “painting” looks amazing – even better in person than online.  Trust me!

My desk is one of my greatest scores – I needed a vanity at my old apartment (when it was just me, and I could be as girly as I wanted), and found this amazing Crate and Barrel desk on Craigslist.  Yup.  Fifty bucks later, it was mine!  I’m not going to lie and say that Craigslist is chalk full of amazing finds – you have to hunt in order to find the hidden nuggets of gold, but they are there.  “Why would someone sell a perfectly good brand new desk from Crate and Barrel?” one might wonder.  In this case, the girl I bought it from was moving cross country, had just bought the desk a few months prior, and didn’t want to pay to ship all her furniture to the east coast… her loss = my gain!

As for those candles – aren’t they cool?  I had seen them at Cost Plus over the holidays in their “seasonal” section, but in my opinion they are perfect year round.  They are actually wrapped in birch bark, so its not candles made to look like trees – they’re actually candles wrapped by tree bark! Ingenious!  I am looking for a small wood crate to hold them in – possibly nesting in moss.  I have them on a copper plate with sand, and its just not right.  At all.

So what’s left?  The good stuff – fun patterned throw pillows – Etsy is a gold mine here, and my real problem is narrowing it down to which pillows to choose?!  Should they all be different, should I do at least two of each for continuity or is it enough to have them in the same color family?  Should I have the same sets on each couch or mix them up (I am going to mix them surely).
The owl photographs.  I love them, my best friend hates them.  Should that deter me?  It probably won’t.
The sunburst mirrors – I LOVE, but I do not LOVE the price tag I have seen on most of them in the store (upwards of $300!)  I want a set of 3 so this could prove challenging… to say the least.
So that’s it – after visually putting it together, I am more and more excited about this room.  I have renewed energy to finish the bedroom furniture, so we can live in a home… not Santa’s Workshop.
Happy Inspiration!

Sea Glass – Color Inspiration

Lately, I have been really inspired by the color of sea glass.  It’s soothing, it’s gender neutral, and it has a really chic look to it.  It also pairs really well with a variety of colors – off whites are a natural first thought, but grey, yellow, coral, green, and brown also look really wonderful.

I am switching gears for our bedroom transformation, and TRYING to be patient as I find alternatives to the Restoration Bedding I really want… maybe this is the way to go.  Our living room has a lot of these calm blues in it, our dining room is this fabulous shade called Opal Essence – the palest of pale aqua’s – would it be too much to carry this into the bedroom as well?!

Heaven is… a HUGE Walk in Closet

I am officially in la la land today, daydreaming the day away – our bedroom is currently in shambles, my clothes residing in cardboard boxes while I refinish my armoire.  The closet is deep, so holds two full racks of clothes, but because one rack is directly behind the other, I can really only see half my wardrobe!  First world problems? Yes.  But, I’m allowed to be a little self indulgent as a girl who is literally living out of a box.  I would give my right arm for one of these dreamy dressing rooms where all my clothes were color categorized, all my bags on display, and all my shoes out in the open to admire.  As a visual person, I think this would be not only a total luxury, but totally useful!  I’d actually end up wearing more of my clothes that are currently hanging forgotten in the back of my closet on my “tier two” rack!  Maybe Kris is onto something with his hankerings to move to the suburbs…

Interior Design: Bedroom Challenge

So after some number crunching, it’s apparent that the gorgeous bedding from Restoration Hardware is not at all within our price range.  That said, I am looking elsewhere for inspiration that will fit into my original vision for our bedroom.  We are going for something that feels luxurious, clean, and classic.  No frills (that is Kris’ main ask), and since I already ordered this print and this print, we are needing something that won’t clash with that vibrant red (I’m still thinking mainly white).

I am loving the look and feel of the below bed – still simple, but with a more intricate scroll border.

I found several inexpensive options that look extremely similar to the above:

  1. Check out the Egyptian Cotton Cable Duvet available at both Sears and the Cassa Decor for $109.
  2. There is also a very simple duvet set from West Elm, also for $109 for a king (is that the magic number or what?)
  3. eBay has a lovely duvet with greek key border for $86.  I am not sure how I personally feel about buying bedding off of eBay, but since the seller has great reviews, it could be worth a shot!
  4. Finally another steal from Sears!  It’s definitely pricier than the rest at $320 for the set – I feel like I have to see it in person to validate the considerably higher cost!

Indoor / Outdoor Living

I’m not sure if it’s the chilly weather, or if I’ve been feeling cooped up in our small cozy apartment, but lately, I’ve found myself day-dreaming about gorgeous indoor / outdoor living spaces.  I envision sitting out late drinking wine and chatting by the fire, cookouts, warm nights, and fuzzy fleece blankets for when summer turns to fall.

I love our little life in San Francisco, but look at these gorgeous spaces.  I am definitely making a mental note for when Kris and I do buy a house and settle down in the suburbs.  How amazing are some of these?!

Bedroom Makeover – Inspiration Board

Yesterday, I posted about how I was tired of living in a half decorated home.  Taking action, I created an inspiration board that reflects the overall look and feel of how I want our room to look.  Last night, I showed Kris my inspiration board, and much to my surprise, he actually really liked it! (Yay!!)

Alright, here it is – my first attempt at putting together an interior design inspiration board –  don’t judge me!

Kris kind of hates my current comforter and side table lamps.  They are admittedly girly with a sort of ‘French Boudoir’ feel, so I get where he is coming from 100%.  With his opinions in mind, I wanted to create a room with a more toned down version of French elegance.  I’m looking to incorporate modern details with more classic pieces, so our bedroom feels more like a posh Parisian hotel than a chateau near Versailles.

Let me take you through each piece.

This duvet set from Restoration Hardware is so gorgeous!  Its simple, elegant, and will make us feel like we are checking into a swanky hotel when we stay it.  It is definitely a splurge, but nice linens will make our bed somewhere we want to stay all day long.

This mirror is a STEAL!  In person, you’d never guess it was the Ung Drill mirror from Ikea (those swedes come up with the oddest names for the furniture)!  Anyways, for $39, its a good size to go over a small dresser, or vanity.  It comes in black, but I plan on painting a second coat of black on top of it.  You are probably thinking “what is she talking about?!” but, don’t forget it’s Ikea.  The frame is not wrought iron – its plastic.  Smooth plastic. To add some texture and trick everyone who sees it, I plan to paint it, so that from first glance it will look much more $$$ than it really is.  Sneaky, sneaky.

Next up, these fabulous lamps.  I am IN LOVE WITH the Stinson Glass Base Table Lamp, and the Amelie Table Lamp. Matching lamps create symmetry and balance in a room, but for visual interest, I am looking for two different lamps that are the same height.  I’ll also use the same shade for each to unify the look, but I love the idea that you can the more modern blown glass lamp will live on Kris’ side of the bed, and the more antique, whimsical lamp will be on mine.  It will serve as a visual indicator of whose side of the bed it is!

(also kind of cool, Pottery Barn carries VERY similar lamps to the blown glass, for $349.  I am snagging mine for $35.  That’s right, 10x savings for the savvy decorator, and NO ONE will know the difference!)
The photos – oh the photos!  I have a new favorite photographer, EyePoetry, from Etsy, who is slowly taking over my life, paycheck by paycheck.  I recently posted about her romantic french series of photos, which I promptly ordered for my office.  They are now hanging up, and everyone at work always compliments them. Since this room is so black and white, I’ve decided it needs a pop of color to prevent it from feeling boring, and these are perfect!  The Moulin Rouge and the Coffee Shop are the must haves here – I’m thinking square frames with large white mattes.  I might have to do a bit of hunting to avoid the $$$ associated with custom framing (oy vey), but Aaron Brothers is always having a sale – buy one frame, get one for a penny, so this project could end up being pretty economical!
I think the thing I am most looking forward to for this room is the new headboard.  I have been completely obsessed with upholstered headboards since Sex and the City aired, and Charlotte redecorated the apartment  she and Tray lived in?  Remember all of Bunny’s tartan prints and mallards – still so obsessed with SATC actually.  My love of SATC must be saved for another day.  Back to the point… I’m on the hunt for a neutral, upholstered headboard – preferably with nail-head trim.
The question is…. where do I get one?!  Do we go with a headboard, or commit to the full bed?  I found the Camden Brass Nailhead Headboard at Ballard Designs, and they also have a tufted version which I will love, but I KNOW Kris will hate. So many decisions to make – I am headed down to Home Goods this weekend – that place is a treasure trove for discounts.  Maybe I will hit the jackpot and find something similar for half as much!!
Because the room is very monochromatic with black and white, and not a lot of patterns, I have looked once more to Etsy, where I found many shops who specialize in gorgeous patterned throw pillows.  On Nenavon I found some extremely reasonably priced pillow covers, and I especially loved the Imperial Trellis and the lumbar Creme and Black with Fret Work.  I may look around a bit more before committing, but these would really do well to make the bed more interesting and inviting.
And, that’s pretty much it – I have some gorgeous furniture that I inherited from my grandmother.  It started out avocado green (very 70’s) when I was in elementary school.  My mom and I later painted it a pale yellow which took me through high school and college.  Since then, I have painted them black, but because these pieces have gorgeous lines, and I plan on keeping them for a lifetime, I am in the process of refinishing the dresser and nightstands.  When I was 21, I had no idea that water based paint chips easily on furniture.  I now have the pleasure of going back to sand, prime, and re-paint everything with oil based paint.  I’m also plugging some holes from the original handle pulls, and selecting new pulls – I am thinking round nobs in a brushed nickel.  It’s been an on going project that has been drawn out since November.  It’s high time I finish, so I am diving into it headfirst this weekend.  I’ll have to document the process along the way so we can see before and after shots.
Happy Wednesday!!

Project Design: Apartment Makeover

It’s official, I am tired of living in a half decorated home, where I love some parts, and hate others.  The living room is coming together so slowly, I have resolved to take the first step into completing this room once and for all.  One of the biggest hurdles I have found in terms of getting things done, is getting the approval from my honey-bunny.  I love him to pieces, but the man cannot make a decision and stick with it!

Two weekends ago, I dragged him around town to look at various sofas – from Pottery Barn in the Marina, to the Macy’s Home Store in Union Square.  The look on his face said it all – I’d pay good money to be anywhere but here.

This is why I have taken things into my own hands.  I have a very clear vision of the things I like – I spend many hours scouring other design blogs, reading my Home Beautiful magazines, and browsing through all the new products at my favorite stores.  That said, I have spent some time putting together Inspiration Boards for each room that still needs help.  So far, I’ve come up with one for the living room, and I hope that Kris likes it, because with the green light, I am moving full speed ahead into this project.
