On a Personal Note…

Where the magic happens #Motivation [PIC]

I just wanted to post a quick note on here, to apologize for being a bit MIA this week.  This week marked the end of a huge chapter of my life – I’ve been working at the same Ad Agency for the past five years, and next week, I begin a new chapter of my life at a new company, doing a completely new job.

For the last year, I’ve been thinking of a new challenge, and after much back and forth, finally settled on which of many paths to take.
truth.
Deciding to make a change is bittersweet, and a little scary… but it’s also exciting, and I know I am going to absolutely love going to work again.
I decided to dedicate a short post to this, because aside from documenting the changes in our home, the trends that I am loving, and the dreams for our future, this blog also documents the different stages of our life together… I make an effort to post every day, sometimes twice a day, but as I adjust to everything over the next several months, it may become harder to keep up with Cup Half Full as much as I have been.  Of course I will still be on here – this blog has saved my sanity more times than I can count – but the posts may be a bit more sporadic… just a heads up.
Wish me luck!!

Deal Alert: Picture Frames ANY size!

I just had to share!!

Source

Aaron Brothers is having their annual 1 cent sale (buy one picture frame, get one for a penny).  It is seriously one of the best sales of the year – if you’ve ever bought frames, you’ll know how quickly the bill ads up!  Large frames like a 24″x36″ are $60 at the lowest price.  That’s $120 for two!!

Knowing that I’ve got plans for my gallery wall in the hallway of ornate frames, you can bet your buttons that I’ll be hitting up Aaron Brothers this weekend!  You can shop their site, or go in store.

Happy shopping 🙂

Wildfox + Clueless = Love

Have you heard of WildFox?  If you haven’t you’ll sure start noticing them more!  Large retailers like Nordstroms, Bloomingdales, and ShopBop all cary Wildfox clothing, but what I am obsessed with is their new Clueless inspired Collection.

Any of you ladies who grew up in the Clueless era know EXACTLY what I am talking about.

Sixth grade was pretty much a blur of saying what-evverrrrrr with my fingers in the “W” sign, and everyday, I made sure to show up to school wearing a short mini skirt, cropped baby t-shirts, and knee-highs.  My mom was at her wits end with the two little strands of hair I’d pull down next to my face in an effort to look JUST LIKE Cher.

OMG, I wanted a white jeep like that SO BAD!

Do these ads bring you back or what???
I can literally hear myself saying As If with as much attitude as my 12 year old self could muster.

OMG amazing… Can you tell, I’m still a little bit obsessed??
Outside of my clueless obsession, these clothes are a fabulous modern take on what has already been popular.  Don’t get me wrong, you aren’t going to find me trotting around town in knee highs again (some things are better left in the past), but that yellow blazer?? Those cute striped shorts??  That itty bitty sexy red dress??
All amazing!!
Check out their Facebook page here or their site with the rest of their collections here!!

Lunchtime Surprise

Cost Plus World Market just happens to be steps from my office, so on my lunch break today, I wandered over to check things out.  What did I find??

Helllloooooooo beautiful…

Yes, my friends… that is a tripod base floor lamp with an absolutely HUMONGOUS shade.  This picture does nothing to portray it’s scale since it was up on a shelf, but it is BIG.  I’m going to guess about two feet in diameter (I was very annoyed that I left my tape measure in my other purse!!)

Anyways, back to the lamp… It’s so fabulous, there are no words.  In the store, they featured the lamp with a natural fiber woven shade, but since the base is sold separately from the shade, you can customize it!

There were burlap shades, linen shades, and shades in bright pops of color.  I was really drawn to the bright yellow shade, but I think a bold color like that is something I should think about – especially since it doesn’t exist in the room elsewhere. I love it in the store, but will I love it for the long haul?

Another thing that makes me pause??  The base is $115 – not cheap, so I’m going to sit on it for a few days.

Here is a more clear picture from their website (actual link here).
World Market happens to be having a huge sale, as they try to clean out furniture for the new spring arrivals, so most furniture is 50% off.  As I was leaving (without the fabulous tripod lamp), I saw these beauties marked down near the door…
Another clearer photo from their site (link here)
The Ella side chair is a classic Louis style, and right now, they are a full 50% off.
For the past year, we’ve used one of the dining room chairs as our desk chair.  It’s not at the top of my list of replacements for the living room (in fact, it didn’t even make it on the list I posted the other day) but I have always wanted to get all four chairs back around the table, and buy a formal desk chair.  This navy velvet is so luxe in person.  And it would look FABULOUS with the blues and greys of the living room…
I’m so tempted to go back and snag one!
I mocked up to envision how it would all pull together with everything else in our living room… What do you think??
I think I’m leaning towards “yes”.

The grey trellis rug, paired with the navy velvet and the grey blue behind the sea fans… and then I’m loving the idea of a striped cushion on twin x benches, and the creamy silk curtains keep everything else light and bright…

I’m really liking it all together!!
Happy Friday!!

Living Room Plans

So the Christmas tree is out, and the living room is feeling mighty empty right now – I have mixed feelings about it.  On one hand, it feels more open, but on another hand, it makes me realize how awkward the layout is right now.

This is a picture from about a year ago but nothing has changed except that small metal table is now gold.  The layout isn’t awful, but I’m not totally loving it, so I think we need to move some things around…

The Christmas tree had been in the window where the wicker chair is in the above picture, but it’s back to this layout – here is an areal view of the living room set up:

The empty space between the seating area with the sofas and the wicker chair / desk flat against the wall is what bothers me.  There is no definition between these two spaces and it drives me crazy!  Another issue with this layout, is that the desk sticks out, making it feel “crowded” as you walk in the room.

I am thinking that by removing the wicker chair, and the awkward small table next to the TV (that is too low to the ground) that the layout will be greatly improved…  here is a revised version of the areal layout…

To quickly recap the changes I’m thinking… I want to move the desk next to the window, so you aren’t “walking into it” when you first enter the room.  I also want to remove the awkward short table that was directly to your left when you entered, and replace it with the wine rack that is currently in our dining room.  The wine rack is taller, so it will sit at the proper height for the height of the mirror, and I think it makes a lot of sense here.  Also, our dining room is teeny, so it will free up more space in there. The wine rack is more narrow than the Ikea table that is there now, so I think that’s also a benefit.
The wicker chair will go into storage, or I’ll try to sell it on Craigslist, and next to the desk, we’ll bring in more light with a pretty standing lamp… maybe something like this tripod lamp
or this lamp that pivots – it’s just kind of cool and I LOVE that big drum shade…
Once we move the desk over next to the window, there will be quite a bit of exposed wall below the large abstract painting.  It’s possible that I’ll like it, but right now, I’m thinking that a few small X benches would be perfect down there.  Aside from being pretty, they’ll also be practical, providing extra seating for guests.

Finally, I want to bring in seating to the third side of the coffee table.  In my mind, I’d see a comfy overstuffed chair there…

Something like the Pottery Barn Manhattan chair looks SO comfy…

But that might be too bulky for this space – maybe something smaller (but still comfy) like a slipper chair would do the trick there… something in a fun print like this could be fun…

or I could keep it simple and dress it up with pillows and a throw…

What do you think of the updated layout??  I am TRYING to work with what I have, and I think moving some of our existing furniture around will absolutely work!

Gallery Wall… without Art

Yesterday, I posted about my goals for decorating our house in 2013, and one of the items on the list was to replace the dwarfed sunburst mirror in the hallway.  If you remember, the sunburst mirror that is hanging there right now was a fun DIY I posted about last year – (original post here).  I am still absolutely loving it, but it’s too small for this space.  Don’t worry – it will likely relocate to our living room or bedroom.
With the sunburst mirror moving to another room, I’ve been brainstorming about what should go on that wall.  I think I am leaning towards a gallery wall of sorts.  I know, I know… I totally chickened out on the gallery wall idea in the living room, but I have a new take on it for the hallway. I am thinking of doing a gallery wall made up entirely of picture frames – no art.
I’ve seen several inspirations from around the web where multiple ornate frames – all in the same color – and it’s FABULOUS!
This white on white on white is very pretty.  I’m not sure we’ll end up with tone on tone in the hallway – especially since our walls are off-white right now, but it’s definitely a possibility…

I am loving this collection of ornate frames from Etsy – antique white!

This next one is a great inspiration – especially since I’ll likely go with white frames on a contrasting wall…  I love how they are staggered down the stairs.

No Source

I love the patina on these – I’d been imagining crisp white, but perhaps a little jolt of blue is what this wall needs…

This picture came from a Halloween feature from Better Homes and Gardens – spooky for sure with the faux cobwebs, but also really pretty.  I am thinking I’ll stay away from black, since there is a lot of that going on elsewhere in our house.

And another all white hallway – this looks the most gallery like, and I still really love the look.  I also love that they did this installation in a narrow hallway like ours.
Another idea I had was to go with a gallery wall made up of mirrors.  This would help reflect light, and open things up – or are plain frames the way to go??

2013 Home Improvement

Now that we are well into the new year, and I am finally getting used to writing “2013” instead of “2012” I’ve started thinking about goals for our home this year.  Assuming we stay put for a bit, I have quite the laundry list of things I want to check off in our little apartment.

First things first, I have to take our Christmas Tree down (gasp) – yes it’s true.  It’s brown, and SO DRY it’s not even funny, but with Kris out of commission, I haven’t been able to take it out yet.  So really… it’s not my fault. Once I get the Christmas tree down, and the millions of pine needles swept up, I’ll be able to tackle my 2013 list for our house.

Let’s start with the Bedroom. Soak in this god awful “before” picture… this one was taken just after we moved in… you can’t see the wall of boxes at the foot of the bed… this was the “good” area so you can only imagine what it looks like outside the frame.  With this horrid image in your mind, you’ll really be able to appreciate the improvements, as I post some “afters” this year.

A month or so into living here, I hung a few mirrors, replaced the lamps, flipped over the duvet, and added a few new throw pillows.  A slight improvement, but still… blah.

This fall, after making absolutely NO headway on the bedroom, I got some faux fur pillows, and a fuzzy throw to refresh things, and this was pretty much where the room stood before having our new bed delivered last month…  With this image in your mind, here is what is on the list for bedroom updates…

Bedroom Updates:
  – New Bedding
  – New Rug
  – Upholstered Headboard
  – Relocate quatrefoil mirrors
  – Hang something else above the headboard
  – New TV Stand
  – New curtains (possibly move existing silk panels to living room)
  – Rewire and hang chandelier
  – Hang something above armoire
  – Hang something above TV
  – Get rid of gold metal stand

Quite the laundry list, eh? I have a feeling that as the room evolves, the list will get longer, but that’s where it stands for now…

Ok moving on to the dining room… so it turns out that I have only one single picture of our dining room, and it’s of the window – you can’t see the awesome Craigslist table and chairs that I got for $50 total, so I’ll have to update you with more photos.  For now, here is the single picture I have…

I love the pale aqua color that I painted it when we moved in – especially paired with the brown silk curtains, but this room still has some updates on the list…

Dining Room
  – Sand and re-paint chairs
  – Sand and re-paint dining room table
  – Reupholster seat cushions
  – Replace Art
  – Re-paint bookshelf

Next up is our hallway – I already have some updates here, but still need to photograph them.  More to come there, but with this most recent photograph in mind, here are the updates on my list:

Hallway:
  – Wire up a lamp (the overhead light is ghastly at night time)
  – Replace dwarfed sunburst mirror
  – Paint walls for greater contrast with the linen closet
  – Organize linen closet

Finally, the living room – this room has definitely gotten the most love in terms of feeling “finished,” but again, I have a long list of changes to make.  Some of them small, but some of them big.  I doubt we will get through all these changes in 2013, but it’s always nice to dream… here is a reminder of how the living room looks right now…

And here is the list…

Living Room
  – Paint trim white for contrast against creme colored walls
  – Add a new standing lamp
  – Replace lamp on the side table (get rid of faux finished monster)
  – Sort out art on wall behind black love seat (gallery wall, larger pieces, abstract??)
  – New sofas (in my dream world, this would happen immediately)
  – Replace wicker chair
  – Replace / revamp cheap ikea table with something taller

Ok, that is a lot to do, but I think we can make some of these happen for sure.  Some people might think it’s crazy to put this much time and energy into a place we don’t own, but to see where it started compared to where it is now makes me feel like it’s completely worth it.

Pink and Gold

Ahh, happy Tuesday!  I had a fabulous long weekend in the mountains with my best friend and her family, and I am back, and refreshed!!  On my mind today??  This lovely spring-like weather SF is having… and with that, spring time colors…

Seriously, is there anything better than a color combo of pink and gold?  It’s feminine, delicate, and now that Christmas is over, and Valentine’s day is the next “big holiday” I keep seeing it EVERYWHERE.  I think it’s such a pretty combination for everything.  It’s feminine without being girly.  It’s fresh, and pretty, and just screams Spring is around the corner!!

Some of my favorites??

This chair for starters… Hello beautiful – wouldn’t this make a fabulous desk chair, or dining chair for the head of the table?  Even in a hallway, or best of all, in a huge, lovely walk in closet!

For a party – favors and cake.  Pink and gold are right at home here!!

Fresh flowers and a pretty votive candle are perfect in pink and gold.  Imagine if those garden roses were in a gold vase.  Ugh – I want!

For the daring – pink and gold wallpaper.  Perhaps the sassiest combination of these colors yet!

Gold flatware is making a huge comeback – imagine an Easter table set with these and pretty pink ribbons.

In art, this look is bold, but still very soft at the same time (does that even make sense??)  What a pretty combo with that brass lamp for a home office.

If you aren’t fully committed to pink and gold in your home, this fun wrapping paper would make any friend smile on her birthday…

Or for Valentines Day, this skirt could easily take you to work, as well as to dinner with your honey, or V-Day drinks with girlfriends.

Pink and gold… amazing right??  Get on board!

Green Bean "French Fries"

As you know, with our tiny kitchen (and my limited culinary skills), I am all for easy recipes.  With the new year, and the inevitable resolution to try to eat healthier, I wanted to feature an AMAZING recipe from a new blog I discovered!

Dashing Dish is all about healthy alternatives for foods we all love (french fries anyone??) and aside from having great step-by-step instructions, Katie also features nutritional facts for each dish.  Seriously, how amazing is that??  Her site is an amazing tool for eating healthy, she has an amazing story behind this site, and she is the most adorable little thing to boot!

Tonight I am going to try out her Crispy Baked Parmesean Green Bean Fries.

Photo via Dashing Dish

It sounds like the secret to getting these just right is to use the REALLY thin green beans so they end up crispy and french-fry-like.  Keep in mind that they have a lot of water in them, so the bigger the green bean, the more water there will be, and they less crispy (and dare I say it, soggy) they will be.

Also, turning the broiler up for the last few minutes should help – I’m always a fan of cooking at higher temps for shorter periods of time.  You end up with crispier results, and better crusts on things like steak, fish, brussels sprouts… you get the idea.

Check out her fabulous blog, and for details on this recipe, click HERE!!

Abstract Art

We are looking to do a little revamp on the wall behind the black couch in our living room (and when I say “we” I’m pretty sure I just mean “me”… Kris will be on board as soon as I tell him – promise).

Anyway, this is the wall as it stands now – three crooked black frames with Ikea art.  Woof.  After four years of these it’s time for an update.

On the opposite wall, we have a really great piece of abstract art, that we both love, so while I had been toying with the idea of a gallery wall for a while, I’m now thinking of a large piece of art (or two).  Art is a VERY personal choice – what one person loves, another might hate, but as long as we love it, that’s what matters.  Looking for inspiration, I turned to Houzz, and it seems to me that the abstract art that I love, falls into one of two categories – “black and white”, or “paint splatter”.

Here is a quick peek at the ones that spoke to me most:

Black and White:

Paint Splatter:

There was one outlier, that I’d categorize as color block, but I think this lime green would eventually limit the color choices we could go with throughout the room – in pillows, and throws.  It’s also quite a bit more modern that I’d typically go, but it’s just cool, right??

The black and white ones are simple and graphic which I really like.  I had a crazy idea of trying to create my own art, and paint two large 30×40 canvases on my own.  How crazy do you think that is on a scale of “totally doable” to “what are you thinking??”  It sounds like so much fun to play artist for an afternoon… my biggest fear is wasting money on the canvases after royally messing it all up.

I mocked up what this wall would look like after I painted my own versions… obviously, using a few of these pieces of art from Houzz as inspiration…

Large geometric pieces in gold frames…

Stretched canvas free form design… (probably much easier to “get right”)

Do you think DIY abstract art is going to turn into a huge mess?  Should I stick with my original idea to do a gallery wall???

I do love the cool look of these vintage alcohol prints.  We had a few similar prints in my old apartment – both of which my roommate still has.

These have fun, bright colors in them, and bring a little more interest to this wall, but I don’t want them to contrast too greatly with the more mellow art on the opposite wall.

On the opposite wall are the sea fan shadow-boxes, and this pretty abstract piece:

So… what’s the verdict?  Any favorites?  Hate them all?
So much to think about!!
