Recipe for Spicy Steamed Mussels

Let’s be honest, I’m no Julia Childs in the kitchen, but in the last year, I’ve been trying to expand my culinary skills beyond quesodillas and pasta dishes.  For at least the last month, I’ve been craving a huge bowl of mussels, and I decided that Friday night was the night.  I headed to Whole Paycheck Foods, and came home feeling confident. I popped open some white wine, tied on my cute ruffled apron, and was dancing about in the kitchen when Kris came home.

“Don’t you think that mussels might be a little… advanced?” he said.  WRONG WORDS my friend.  Kris was banished to the living room while I bolstered my confidence with another glass of wine.

Fast-forward 30 minutes and we were feasting on one of the best dinners I have ever had – trust me when I say that this is one of the EASIEST and MOST IMPRESSIVE meals I’ve ever made!  Extra bonus – its fast, and it doesn’t require too many dishes (a total bonus in my itty bitty kitchen).

Spicy Mussels in a White Wine Sauce:

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup olive oil
    1/2 onion, thinly sliced
    4 cloves garlic, chopped
    2 teaspoons fennel seeds
1 teaspoon dry crushed red pepper
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup dry white wine
2 slices lemons, 1/4 inch thick
    1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
    2 1/2 lbs fresh mussels, scrubbed, de-bearded
    1/2 cup chopped seeded tomato
  • Instructions:

  • – Heat oil in heavy large pot over medium-high heat
    – Add onion, garlic, fennel seeds, crushed red pepper and salt; sauté until onion is light brown, about 4 minutes
    – Add wine, lemon slices and 1/4 cup parsley; bring to boil
    – Add mussels
    – Cover pot and cook until mussel shells open, stirring once to rearrange mussels, about 6 minutes; discard any mussels that do not open
    – Using slotted spoon, transfer mussels to large shallow bowl
    – Boil broth in pot until reduced to 1 cup, about 3 minutes; season to taste with pepper
    – Toss in tomato chunks for the last 30 seconds of heat
    – Pour broth over mussels
    – Sprinkle remaining parsley over
  • I served the mussels with some rustic sourdough bread (to soak up the delicious sauce), some grilled artichokes, and a really simple linguine pasta (just boil pasta, drain, add butter, olive oil, salt, pepper, fresh flat leaf parsley, red pepper flakes, and fresh parmigiano reggiano cheese).

I wish I could take total credit for this recipe, but it came out of an old Gourmet Magazine.  Stay tuned for more adventures in my kitchen.  Bon Appetite!

    Backless Dresses: Fashion Inspiration

I’ve been totally wowed with some of the super sexy backless dresses I’ve seen – most are modest in the front, and total sex goddess in the back.  Mama always said, “only show-off one part of your body at once”… not sure she had these little numbers in mind with that advice!
With the weather warming, and a possible tropical vacation on my horizon, I can’t get the idea of a sassy backless dress to go with my tan (spray tan, but still)so I’ve decided to do a little outfit recreation – enjoy!

    Vintage Photographs

I just got totally sucked into a new Tumblr blog today – Honey.  This site had amassed so many gorgeous vintage photographs, I just had to share.

There is something so nostalgic in some of these that makes me so jealous of my parents’ and grandparents’ generations.  I am so in love with the fashion – the feminine details, the curvy figures, the big glasses, the high waists and full skirts, the hats, the gloves, and the pearls (oh my).

Enjoy some pretty pics to make it through the mid-day Thursday slump.

Fun Craft Project: Spray Painted Lightbulb

Everyone knows the easiest way to create romantic atmosphere is to light a candle, but I came across a cool DIY that I am DYING to try!

    Lightbulb Makeover: DIY
Spray paint a bulb covered with lace. Remove the lace and ... tah-dah, pretty

If you have a plain light bulb in your home that could use some sprucing, then this project is for you!  Just grab a piece of lace and some spray paint!

Tape lace over light bulb (I’d use a low watt, soft pink or soft white bulb).  Hold can 8-10 inches away, and spray evenly with paint.  Carefully remove the lace while the paint is wet, and set the bulb to dry.  What could be easier?!

This would look great in metallic (to glitz up a closet, or dining room), soft pastel colors (baby’s room), or bold hues (for the adventurous)!

I am having grand visions of painting a few, and clustering them together for a modern (and inexpensive) alternative to a chandelier.  Obviously with the paint blocking most of the light, these aren’t going to illuminate a dark room or give you ample reading light, but the soft glow through the intricate pattern will likely cast a cool design in a dark room, provide a bit of light for those with bad dreams, or just look plain awesome.

Heaven is… a Zen Outdoor Shower

    outdoor shower

I should post a picture of my actual shower for comparison’s sake.  My teeny tiny art-deco stall shower – it’s just sad!

I would do just about anything to shower in one of these babies!  My obsession began the first time I stayed at the Bardessono Resort in Yountville, CA (a fairly new, eco friendly resort in the heart of the Napa wine country) – just steps from the French Laundry and Michael Chiarello’s restaurant and shop.  It’s a lovely spot – the rooms all have huge fireplaces, soaking tubs, heated floors, and luxe patios.  On top of that, some of the rooms have fabulous outdoor showers.

I’m not going to lie, it feels a little risque to walk out on the patio naked for your morning shower, but it’s so freeing, and kind of sexy.

    A girl can dream, right?!

    Pink Ombre Cake

My best friend Kira just celebrated her birthday, and to make it extra “sweet” I decided to bake her a cake.  I am somewhat known for my baking skills in our little group of friends, however, I decided to step things up a bit and test out a fabulous ombre cake I originally saw on Pinterest!!

Glory of Glorious Treats has a fabulous tutorial to making this pink confection, and I was up quite late on Sunday evening baking my heart out.  Unfortunately, I did not realize I had left my pastry bag and tips at my old apartment, and so alas, the outside of the cake does not also have the ombre frosting rosettes.  I’m not even going to lie – the outside of the cake is pretty sad looking, but it’s what is inside that counts.  I tried to cover up the ugly frosting job with coconut shavings.  That was minimally successful to say the least.  Oh well, the real surprise is inside.  Fingers crossed it turns out!  I only wish I had thought to document the process because it was really quite an ordeal.  Take a look at the how-to here.

When researching, I also came across this post on I am Baker.  A totally different variation of layered cakes, but I am just loving the larger roses frosting the top and sides.  It’s a bit more elegant, and dare I say it, maybe a tad easier to make two different kinds of cake (vanilla and chocolate) than mixing a single batter, dividing it by four or five bowls, and mixing gradient colors in each.

My dad’s 60th birthday is coming up as I mentioned… maybe that is the perfect occasion to test this out!  Frosting rosettes and all!

    Wedding Style Guide: Beach Wedding

As I mentioned here, I’ve started a wedding season series and today we are talking about beach weddings.  Whether it’s a destination wedding in Tahiti, or a SoCal fete, I’ve got you covered with a few looks to inspire.

Living in California, beach weddings are popular so trust me, you do not want to be that guest teetering on high-heels in the sand.  You will look ridiculous.  The best approach to looking beachy beautiful?  Look for easy to wear fabrics, earthy accessories, and anything that would look good floating in the breeze.

    California Chic:

    Beach Wedding 4

This look is so easy to wear, and the minty green will highlight tanned legs and arms.  The open keyhole in the front (or back) makes this simple dress a little flirty, and the lightweight silk will help keep you cool on a warm day.  The thing about coastal weddings?  The nights cool off, so bring a wrap!  Nude sandals will elongate your legs, even if they are flat!  The bonus here?  This dress is reversible, so you get double the wear!

    Polished Polynesian:

    Beach Wedding II

What could be more chic than a floral maxi dress?  The length of this little number ensures you feel dressed for the occasion, but the lightweight fabric and sleeveless cut will keep you cool for those balmy nuptials in a tropical locale.  Gold accessories and a woven tote summon a warm weather vibe, and bright coral toes will compliment your Tahitian tan.

    Flamenco Inspired Fashion:

    Beach Wedding III

For the fashion forward, go for bright pops of color and trendy cuts.  With the drapey fabric, and the feminine flutter wrap on the skirt, this dress will carry you from the beach to the dance floor in seconds.  Chunky statement jewelry make the look memorable, and bold blue accessories spice things up.

    Happy Monday!

I’ve been a bit MIA recently, but am so glad to be back!
Last week was rainy and dreary, and with all the storms, Kris and I were feeling cooped up by Sunday.  Luckily, the sun was out, so we headed out to the coast.
The ocean was really churned up from the storms, and the waves were HUGE!  We hiked out to Mavericks Surf in Half Moon Bay, to watch the surfers brave the monster waves.  The waves were close to 60 feet, and they had guys on jet skis towing the surfers into the waves.  So crazy!  Kris hiked to the top of the hill to watch, but I was feeling lazy so I settled myself on some huge flat rocks and soaked up the sun.
We headed over to the Half Moon Bay brewery afterwards, and with the fire pits and heat lamps going, it was just warm enough to sit outside.  All the beers are brewed all the distillery behind the restaurant – I’m not a huge beer drinker, but with the sun shining, and my toes toasty warm by the fire, I was more than happy to enjoy few beers, a crab sandwich, and a huge plate of nachos.
Here are a few pics from yesterday – such a fun day, and such a perfect end to the weekend!

    Rustic Wine Country Wedding

I stumbled upon this beauty of a wedding, and have completely fallen in love with the natural beauty of this event.  From the lush landscape of leafy trees and vineyards, to the rows upon rows of bistro lights strung above the tables.
    My favorite parts:
      – Her dress.  Oh my gosh, those ruffles!
      – The Chairs.  Such a small detail, but the wooden chairs reminiscent of a turn of the century school
         house bring such charm!!
      – The Lighting.  The lights strung in the trees create such a whimsical event space.  They make such a
large outdoor space feel cozy, and capture the magic you’d want to feel on your wedding day
      – The flowers.  A simple combination of white and green, they are loosely gathered into vases to avoid
being  fussy.  There is a lot of natural greenery used in addition to the lilies and hydrangeas, which is
unique, and compliments the venue, as opposed to taking away from the natural beauty of the space.
      – The Stage.  Looks like such a fun reception – set for a live band and dancing till dawn
