Frugal Finds – O’verlays

BEST FIND ALL WEEK!!  Who doesn’t love having gorgeous furniture?! Everyone! Who loves to pay thousands to furnish their home?  Crickets…

Danika & Cheryl have created O’verlays – a company dedicated to the easy, graphic customization of furniture… most specifically, Ikea furniture.  Yup… Ikea.  With a little bit of elbow grease, you can whip up some super affordable, super stylish furniture for your bedroom, living room, dining room, ____________ room – fill in the blank – the possibilities are endless, and just look at how fabulous these pieces look!

I have to add, I am NOT being paid to endorse their product – I just think it’s a seriously awesome idea, and I’m stoked I stumbled upon it!

‘Who uses it’ you wonder? Well I think anyone who loves a good steal, but it would be a great for a 20 something who is just starting out and can’t afford a ton of designer pieces.  It’s great to dress up a kid’s room, or a guest room that needs some style without a hefty price tag, and its perfect for a person (like me) who easily gets bored with decor and is looking to spice up an entry table, TV stand, or work space.  Also if you want something graphic but aren’t sure you want to commit for years, you don’t have to feel bad, because depending on how you attach the panels, you can remove it in a few years if you are looking for a new look and feel.
What I love best is that Danika & Cheryle actually sell kits that are already cut to fit Ikea furniture.  If you know you are working on the 6 drawer Malm dresser, you don’t even have to measure – you can just search the patterns by the name of the Ikea piece you are looking to make-over, and voila, you are up and running!  What could be easier?!
Last thing (I swear) – they are so awesome that they have been featured by Nate Berkus Show.  Yeah – Oprah’s go to man for home styling… no big deal…
I know that I’ve got quite a few projects lined up over the next few months – finishing the nightstands and armoire, overhauling the bedroom and finishing the living room, but I’m thinking that in between fabricating some awesome campaign furniture, and sealing the bedroom furniture, I might be able to test out O’verlay’s on a small side table in the living room, or possibly the wine rack in the dining room…

Engagement Photos: Rustic Session

A lot of my friends are starting to get engaged and married, and so my world is full of everything “wedding” (kind of awesome).  With weddings and engagements on the brain, I always get excited when I come across photographs that grab me.

Isn’t this one so sweet?  It’s nothing fancy – no props, no designer shoes, no “model-y blank stares at the camera”.  It’s casual, simple, and keeps the focus on the couple.  I just love it!

Happy Hump Day!

Campaign Furniture

LonnyMag

Gorgeous right?!  These pieces showcase clean lines, sturdy hardware, and compliment both traditional and modern decor.  I wanted to know the background behind this style of furniture, and thanks to Wikipedia, I now know more than I ever wanted to about campaign furniture.

Simply put, campaign furniture specifically refers to any furniture designed to be easily broken down and packed up to carry on the march (“the march” as in… with the military).  Despite the contemporary feel, this type of furniture can actually date back to the time of Julius Caesar, however the pieces here are more reminiscent of late 18th, 19th and early 20th century British military.  Because of the nature of campaign furniture, you’ll often find these pieces as trunks and desks, however there are some fabulously styled dressers and side tables that I am IN LOVE WITH.

The hitch?  Campaign furniture can be pricey… I’ve spent some time trying to hunt down a great campaign fixer-upper, and unfortunately, all the consignment shops, antique shops, and vintage furniture shops all know the value of these pieces – no matter how beat up they are!  What’s a girl to do?  Get crafty… that’s what!

Do you like this cute blue campaign dresser?  Well guess what, this piece is from Ikea, and thank’s to Jenny at  LittleGreenNotebook, you don’t have to shell out some big bucks for this awesome look!

Click here to see the “how to”, here to see the brass flat corners, and here to see that fabulous hardware… I am TOTALLY doing this…

Engagement Ring Guide: "Virtually" find the one for you!

For all you engagement ring junkies out there, this is your lucky day!  I just discovered the most amazing invention since sliced bread.  Tacori has just released an augmented reality “Try it On” feature on their site, where you can virtually try on the most gorgeous engagement rings.  Um, YES PLEASE!

I am by no means the most technologically savvy person, so trust me when I say, it’s so easy!!

Step 1.  Print out the funky paper ring – this will serve as the marker for your webcam

            Step 2.  Download software here

Step 3.  Cut out paper ring, and secure it around your finger

Step 4.  Hold up marker to webcam and prepare to be dazzled

Play around – print out a few pics for your wish list, send it to your mom (definitely going to do that later), or leave them around the house for your honey-bear to find…

I’m not sure which was my favorite… I loved them all!

Clearly, it’s been a SUPER hectic day at the office 😉  Don’t judge!

Date Night

Tonight, Kris and I are heading out for a much needed date night – nothing over the top, just dinner and a late movie.  Kris has been working such long hours and I’ve had back to back client events every night… it feels like we are ships in the night!  Well, I’m putting a stop to that.  Date night it is…

I have been dying to go to Out The Door – the cost efficient sister restaurant to The Slanted Door. Take a look at the menu – everything is amazing – the crab cellophane noodles are TO DIE FOR, and the shaking beef?? Don’t even get me started.  It’s a short walk from our apartment, and is totally on the way to the Kabuki movie theater – possibly the best  theater on earth (you can reserve your seats in advance, there is a bar in the  theater, and the seats are sooooo comfy – my biggest complaint about other theaters).

I can’t wait for some romance!  Happy Saturday night!

Heaven is… An Oversized Soaking Tub

My home envy continues as I lust after these gorgeous bathrooms.  Our apartment is very “art deco”, which means that it was built in the 1930’s, and while I suppose it has it’s own charm (pink and maroon tile anyone??), the bathtub leaves a little something to be desired.  Scroll down and swoon over these amazing tubs.  A huge soaking tub is going on the bucket list for home ownership.  I mean, imagine coming home after a long day to soak in one of these babies with a glass of wine… amazing…

Lady Like Elegance: Splurge vs. Save

I’ve been spending more and more time on Polyvore, and find myself totally drawn to the super expensive designer shoes, handbags, and clothing.  Obviously, its easy to make fabulous outfits out of Valentino, Gucci, and Manolo, but I’ve decided that for every FABULOUS designer outfit I put together for inspiration, I match it with the budget version that normal people can actually afford.

The first installment is the ultra lady-like outfit.  Peplum screams “I’m a lady” since it nips in the waist, and flatters the natural curve of a woman’s body (or enhances if its you are lacking in the curve department).  The Splurge version of this outfit will cost upwards of $20,000.  Crazy right?  Unfortunately that Chanel bag’s price isn’t listed, but its at least $10K.  At least.

SPLURGE:

The Dream - Lady Like Elegance

Mulberry beige shirt, $600
Valentino gauze skirt, £747
Christian louboutin shoes, $625
Chanel quilted handbag
Marco Bicego gold engraved jewelry, $5,610
Forzieri gold earrings, $1,194
Cartier jewelry, 1,572 CAD

Now take a look at the “Save” version of this same look.  Still cute, still lady-like, but a heck of a lot more affordable!  From head to toe, this is $400 – $500.

SAVE:

Look for Less - Lady Like Elegance

Peplum top, $17
Paul Costelloe knee length pencil skirt, £39
MICHAEL Michael Kors studded heels, $120
Python handbag, $89
Majorica south sea pearl earrings, $75
Jon Richard chunky jewelry, £40
Banana republic jewelry, $50

Obviously a lot of us have the staples to this look – you could substitute the pearls for CZ studs, or grab that cute black clutch you use out on the town.  I love playing around with looks, because maybe it’s just the peplum top you are looking for, to pair with your own pencil skirt and sky high heels, or maybe you’ve got a great peplum top, but have been looking for something to wear it with.  I look in my own closet and there is never anything to wear!  Now, I can look to the designers who know what they are doing, and model looks after the runway!

Lazy Day

Lazy Day

If this isn’t the perfect outfit for running errands, grabbing lunch, or hitting the stores to look for a new sofa (aka, my exact plans for this Saturday), then I don’t know what is – warm slouchy sweater, dark dark dark skinny blue jeans, and blush everywhere – in the bag, bracelet, ballerina flats, and scarf.  Chilly weather just hit San Francisco, and I am not going anywhere without something wrapped around my neck!

Can I Live Here… Please?

I have just discovered Lonny – a gorgeous online site with design inspiration, but the best part (yes it gets better) is their online magazine!!  I want to live in it’s pages.  I think I’m in love.

They have the standard site that is organized by category (living room, bedroom, kitchen, etc), where the photos are displayed in a gallery format – just browse and click.  It’s very visual, and very lovely.  In addition to their site, they have a digital magazine where you virtually flip through the pages – very tactile.  It would be fabulous on an ipad, because honestly there is just something so therapeutic about flipping through the pages of a magazine.  Right?!  New LOVE.
