Wall Trees

Living in San Francisco, these old apartments don’t leave much space for Christmas decor, much less a beautiful, big Christmas tree.
Luckily, Kris and I have a large living room, and there is a perfect spot for the tree in the window, but a lot of my friends simply don’t have a tree – which I find SO sad!  I couldn’t imagine December without that lovely piney smell, and the soft glow of the fairy lights.  Especially since these are the shortest days of the year, I feel like I’m never even home when it’s light outside anymore!
That said, I have seen so many ideas for wall trees that would be perfect for apartment living!  All of these temporary solutions to having a tree without ACTUALLY having a tree!
I love the rustic feel of this tree that uses old branches stacked vertically in a tree shape.  Small ornaments and fairy lights are pretty, and you’ll hardly miss the real thing!

Or grab a can of paint, and free hand a Christmas tree right on the wall!  As long as you have the original room’s paint color, it will take literally 10 minutes to paint back over it once the holidays are over – less time than packing up all those ornaments, right??

Gallery walls are a huge trend right now, so why not twist that idea, and make a gallery tree.  Use ornaments, magnets, small frames, and whatever else you have.  Keep it lightweight and you’ll likely be able to use double sided tape for most of it, and small tacks for the rest!

Washi Tape – hard to find in normal stores, but easy to order online in plenty of patterns and colors.  It doesn’t get more temporary (or easy) than this!  And how cute!

A few thin twigs, a few tacks, and some small Christmas ornaments are all you need to make this next wall tree! I love how this one leans over as though the ornaments are weighing it’s wispy frame down.  How clever!

Hello there Chalkboard paint!  If you already have a chalkboard wall in your home, then you’re pretty much set, but if not, it’s kind of the perfect opportunity to jump on this bandwagon!  How sweet is this chalkboard tree?? (now if only I had that kind of artistic talent!)

Grapefruit and Rosemary Holiday Cocktail

I love me a good cocktail, and as work gets hectic towards the end of the year, sometimes I love me a good STRONG cocktail.
Please meet my new favorite after work friend – the Grapefruit and Rosemary Holiday Cocktail.  You will love me forever once you try!
From Taste of the South, Christmas Cooking Southern Style 2010
Ingredients
1/4 cup crushed ice
1 tablespoon fresh rosemary
1 (1/4-inch-thick) slice grapefruit
1 1/2 ounces vodka
4 ounces seltzer water
Garnish: grapefruit slices and rosemary sprigs
Directions
In a cocktail shaker, muddle together ice and rosemary
Add grapefruit slice, and muddle again
Pour vodka and seltzer water over muddled grapefruit mixture
Strain into a glass. Serve with ice, (if desired), or serve it up in a martini glass
Garnish with a grapefruit slice and a rosemary sprig (to be fancy, of course)
**For whiskey lovers, vodka can be substituted with Bourbon – a totally different drink, but equally delicious.  A lesson I learned when we ran out of Vodka.

New Years Eve – Fashion Inspiration

We’ve all been totally consumed with Christmas this month, but with New Years just around the corner, I’ve been on the hunt for a fabulous dress to ring in 2013!!

Figuring out what to wear is always a challenge when you are still focused on wrapping up your Christmas shopping for everyone else, and I always feel a little guilty to be shopping for myself this time of year.  Throwing off those guilty feelings, I’ve put together a few inspirations for my dress hunt this year…

Glitter All Night Long

All that Glitters

Elie Saab glitter dress / Hervé Léger / Rare Opulence full skirt dress, $285 / Short sequin dress / V back dress / Gold cocktail dress, $49 / Quiz gold sequin cocktail dress, $41

New Years Eve is one of the few times of year that you are allowed to be as glitzy and glittery as you want!  Head to toe sparkle??  You go girl!  I’m all about the glitz, and who doesn’t want to stand out in the crowd??

Show a Little Skin

Cut Out

This is not a look for the faint of heart, or the conservative / shy / body conscious.  All eyes will be on you in a cut out dress, and these scream sexy! If you want to test the waters, go for a small cut-out on the lower back – like this silver brocade dress (bottom right).  If you are confident and ready to embrace this trend, side cut outs will show off toned abs, and if you are raring to go, a sheer body con number (upper right) will be perfect for you.

Be Unexpected

Bold Brights

Donna Karan twist dress / Lanvin embroidered dress, $3,780 / Hervé Léger rayon dress / Hervé Léger form fitting dress / Z Spoke by Zac Posen stretch dress, $235 / Beaded dress / River Island body conscious dress, $24

There’s a lot of black this time of year.  Dare to be different in bright colors that are normally reserved for warmer weather.  Go day-glo with neon yellow, green, or orange, or embrace the jewel tone family with amethyst and cobalt blue.  Feeling flirty? Hot pink all the way!

Wish me luck as I brave the holiday shoppers downtown, as I hunt for my NYE dress!!

Gussy up Your Gift Wrap!

I’ve never been great at wrapping gifts… I don’t have the patience to get the folds perfect, and I use quite a bit of tape to make up for my impatience.  As a firm believer in the idea that enough ribben can solve any imperfection, I’ve been looking for a little holiday wrapping inspiration that looks simple enough, and still pretty.

What did I come up with??

Use Lace

Source
Yup – wrap a sheath of lace around a simply wrapped brown paper parcel, and you are good to go (and no one will know the mass amounts of tape holding things together under the paper!!)

Go Metallic

Source
All that reflective wrapping paper is bound to camoflauge some imperfectly folded edges right??  And under the tree with the twinkling lights – it will be pretty enough to distract from the part where I didn’t quite cut enough paper to cover everything… right??

Accessorize A LOT

Source
Go overboard!  It’s the holidays afterall!!  Grab some pom poms, burlap, ribben, doilies, fabric flowers… the works!  Just keep layering!

Go Natural

Source
Go ahead – snap some pine branches off the tree – no one’s going to miss them!  Glue a few pinecones to the top, and it’s a charming “woodsy” package.

Did I miss any super handy tricks for fancifying an otherwise poorly wrapped present??

I think I’m going to test a few of these out tonight since the fruits of my online shopping have payed off big time.  Almost everything has arrived, with plenty of time to spare!!

Citrus Garlands – Inspiration and Tutorial

Is this holiday mantle just to die for, or what??  I just love the lush garland draped over the hearth, heavy with citrus fruit, and evergreen branches.  I can almost smell it!

You might think oranges and lemons are better left for the summer months, but I beg to differ!  Look how fabulous this tree is!

And another peek of the tree up close…

By mixing the citrus with gold and bronze bulb ornaments, it feels fresh, but still traditional, and you can imagine how pretty it is at night.

A few of the oranges have been embellished with thumbnails – clever!  It reminds of me being little – my sister and I would be enlisted to puncture a few oranges with cloves.  The smell is intoxicating.  I can’t even explain it!

And just look at that staircase!!  It has another massive garland adorned with more citrus – it’s as lovely as the first.

While it’s a simple idea, it has a huge impact – especially against that black and white wall.

I knew I’d seen a DIY online for a pretty citrus garland (since these are EXTREMELY expensive if ordered from a florist), and sure enough… I had bookmarked one about a year ago!

Oh Happy Day is my go-to for anything crafty, and party related.  A few years back, they posted this FABULOUS tutorial on putting together a pretty citrus garland.

Their tutorial is wonderful, but to add the holiday look and feel of the garlands above, be sure to incorporate pine or evergreen branches, some gold ribbon, and a few pine cones!

Ornament Garland DIY

Hello hello and happy Monday!

I’m all tuckered out from the MANY holiday parties we went to over the weekend, but despite the back-to-back party schedule, I still managed to fit in a little DIY project that I’ve been dying to try!

Kate of Centsational Girl created a beautiful, blingy garland for her holiday mantle that I just had to have!  Using her tutorial, and these photos for inspiration, I set out to make one of my own.

Trust me when I say that this project could not be easier!

I bought one large multipack of silver ornaments from target, along with three smaller sized packs to vary the size and shape of the ornament clusters.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t find floral wire, fishing wire, or even a thin rope at the store, but they did have wired garlands with stars all over it, so I figured that was close enough to get the job done.

I laid everything out first into a little assembly line, and got to work threading varying ornaments onto the wire garland.

And the final result??

A really pretty (really easy to make) holiday garland for our hallway!  I’d originally been thinking of doing this garland in golds and bronze colors, but I think the cool colors of the silver and gunmetal look really pretty with the blue table.

I’m still working on styling the table, since the two potted red amaryllis plants that were there earlier this week didn’t look right with the wintery looking garland. In my dream world, I’d have two mini evergreen trees here, but alas, it’s all a bit too much for our teeny hallway.

In the end, this garland ended up being around 4 feet long, which is perfect for it to serpentine around the top of the table, and the best part is, that if I ever want to add to it, I can tie more wire onto the existing garland, and thread on more ornaments.

Ornament garland… SUCCESS!

Holiday Fashion Guide

The month of December is most obviously one of the busiest times of the year, where my social calendar is packed with festive get-togethers, holiday shopping, and spiked eggnog around every turn.  The last thing I want to worry about is what to wear at the last minute, so I’ve put together some holiday fashion inspiration, to keep me focused despite the chaos.

Holiday Lunch:
Whether it’s an upscale lunch with friends downtown, or a swanky client lunch for work, a head to toe look with winter white is chic, and simple to pull together.  Look for a creamy white in luxe fabrics like silk, silk-cashmere blends, and cashmere.  These fabrics will keep you warm in chilly weather, and the fabric will drape in a really pretty way.  One thing to be cautious of is cheap fabrics – since it’s a monocromatic look, poor quality will be very easy to spot.  Also, when doing all white, do not go for anything too form fitting.  It will accentuate every flaw, and nothing looks cheaper than tight, white clothing.

Holiday Lunch

Moschino wool shirt / Tulle Clothing / 3.1 Phillip Lim / Vince Camuto taupe high heels / Estée Lauder lip makeup, $29

Office Holiday Party:
You may be attending a fancy dinner or cocktail hour for your Office holiday party, but do not forget for a moment that you are with co-workers, and you are still essentially “at work.”  This means, if you wouldn’t wear it in front of your grandmother, then you shouldn’t be wearing it at all.  A good rule of thumb: nothing too low (ie: cleavage bearing), nothing too short (your skirt shouldn’t be more than 3″ above the knee), and nothing too tight (this is pretty self explanatory).  A classic red sheath dress is still festive and feminine, classic pearl accessories will pop against the bright color, and a little leopard clutch never hurt anyone.  Trust me when I say, nearly every office has that one person who is going to break out the too short, backless ensemble – do not be that person!

Office Holiday Party

Roksanda Ilincic wool crepe dress, $1,255 / Forever New , $94 / B Brian Atwood peep toe pumps / Dorothy Perkins clutch handbag / Kate Spade pearl necklace / Majorica pearl jewelry

Christmas Shopping
I think we’ve all made this mistake before – wearing your very cutest “It’s Christmas-time in the City” outfit to hit the stores, only to regret those stiletto boots an hour into your shopping expedition.  If you haven’t, you are one of the lucky ones, but take it from me – there is NOTHING worse than aching feet, when tromping from store to store.  Comfort is key – flat or nearly flat boots with good support will be your best friend, and I am a huge fan of leggings with a long tunic sweater or sweater dress.  You will be super comfortable, and chic enough to stop into Nieman’s for a quick latte mid-day.

Christmas Shopping

Fat Face knit top, $72 / Green coat / Oasis legging, $18 / Clarks high heel shoes / Barbour leather satchel handbag, $320 / Dolce&Gabbana dolce gabbana, $515 / Estée Lauder lip makeup, $29

Christmas Dinner
I know a lot of people who spend Christmas Day in their pajamas, and everyone wears their elastic waist pants to dinner.  If that’s your family, you can skip this part, because I am a firm believer in making Christmas dinner a special event.  Evening gowns not required, but I think a cute sweater dress, patterned lace tights, and a pair of these gold capped pumps would make the perfect ensemble to gather with family, open gifts, and eat a delicious meal together.  It’s church appropriate, comfortable enough to get through plenty of that roast, and the tights will help save your legs from the cold during the annual after dinner walk through the neighborhood to see the lights.

Christmas Dinner

rag & bone long sleeve dress / Hooded cape coat / Forever 21 patterned tight / Mango cap toe pumps, $115 / Hermès yellow gold bangle bracelet / Alexis Bittar gold bangle / Love Rocks chunky necklace / Enamel jewelry

Frugal Finds – Live Boxwood Wreath

On the note of Christmas decor, look what I found today at Trader Joes…

A beautiful live boxwood wreath!!

And guess how much this cost??  Ten bucks!  Can you believe it??  They were selling live boxwood wreaths at the Christmas Tree lot near my house, and they were going for $50.  I think I’ll go back tomorrow and grab a few more before they are all gone!

The photo above is the inspiration for how I plan to hang the wreath… perhaps it will hang inside our dining room window, or against the large mirror in the living room…. I am so excited to find some pretty velvet ribbon and hang this bad boy up!!

Hurry, go snatch up all the $10 boxwood wreaths you can find!

Christmas Decor

It’s going to be pouring buckets of rain for the next few days, so my grand plan this weekend is to decorate for the holidays.  Aside from getting a tree, I want to swap out all the fall decor for wintery accessories that look like the holidays while keeping an organic feel.

Where else did I turn for inspiration than Pinterest, that is brimming with crafty, creative ideas.  Some of my favorites??

Well, for starters, I just LOVE these burlap pillows.  I would imagine that these would be fairly easy to replicate with a few letter stencils, fabric paint, and a sponge brush… and Ikea has fabulous linen pillow covers (20″x20″) for just $6!

Source

I also love the look of these gifts, wrapped up in plain brown butcher paper, and decked out with red ribben, buttons, bows, and berries.  Unique, and pretty.

Source

These paper wrapped ornaments are another simple project, and could also double as gift tags on a present!  Tear up yesterday’s newspaper, bust out the modge podge, and finish with glitter!  Easy!

I imagine that this pretty boxwood wreath would be much easier to buy than to make, and I love the simplicity of it.  I envision a few of these hanging in our windows this year.

And finally, how pretty and simple is this winter white vignette.  I may head out to the store right now for a pair of mini Christmas trees, and fake snow!

It’s Beginning to Feel a lot like Christmas

Ok, yeah it’s definitely not.  It’s not even halloween yet, but I’ve seen so many FABULOUS ideas for Holiday decor on Pinterest, and this one I just HAD to share!

Isn’t that the most adorable tablescape of mini Christmas Trees.  This is actually direct from StyleMePretty – the post on a Christmas DIY Potluck.  These ladies are so crafty, making all sorts of adorable projects like wreaths made out of old book pages…

I mean how awesome is that??  Another favorite project they showcased were these adorable little Christmas trees made of different sizes of cut paper.  It’s actually pretty self explanatory to make just by looking at it, but how clever (and lovely)

To make the moss trees from the tablescape, you’ll need a few foam cones from the craft store, a hot glue gun, cute pot, some sturdy twigs, floral wire, and some flat moss… start gluing away, and you’ll end up with some sweet (and easy) moss topiaries.  I also love the idea of using round foam balls for these (less holiday, and they could even take you through January and February)!

OK… back to thinking about Halloween, and getting our costumes ready for the weekend!!
