White Vanity – Inspiration to Reality

Perhaps it’s the warm weather we’ve been having, or the fact that it stays light out until almost 9pm now (longest day of the year is this Friday!) but I have been finding myself drawn to light, bright, spaces that don’t use much color.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of color – wearing it… decorating with it… but this vanity space is so pretty, I couldn’t resist trying to find pieces to re-create it.
Places like Target, Overstock, and Ikea are great for simple pieces like these – I love that Ikea has come up with their own take on the Lucite chair (I also wrote about it here)… zGallerie is fabulous for large funky accessories, and RugsUSA is always a favorite source of mine.  This Jute rug is 65% off right now, and is just $79 for the 5’x8′ size.  Can you seriously beat that price??
Actually this entire setup could be re-created for less than $500 – all together, this look costs $450, and the mirror alone is $200.  If you shopped HomeGoods, you could probably find a mirror of this size for ~$50, taking this look down to$350 or so…
Happy shopping!

Federal Style and a History Lesson

It started with this picture from Blue Label Bungalow

This room is a bit more traditional and masculine then I would choose for my own home, but there is one piece in particular that caught my eye in this space… can you guess what it is??  (No not the lamps, although I DO love those too…)

Maybe these other pictures will give you a hint…

Still don’t know??  Here’s a few more hints…
No Source
Yeah, I know it’s totally obvious… I was just totally indulging my obsession with the ornate, old time-y Federal Mirrors that I seem to keep noticing EVERYWHERE. In college I double majored in Sociology and History… BUT… I am a complete novice when it comes to spotting and identifying period pieces.  All I know is that these mirrors are cool, and I want to know more about them…
I dug up a little info on their origin – The Dumbarton House talks about where these mirrors originated:
Our nation’s early years, when the Federalist Party led the American government between 1790 and 1828, generally defines the Federal period. During this time, a strong sense of nationalism was born and many government leaders, like Thomas Jefferson, looked to the classical past of Greece and Italy for inspiration in forging the identity of the new American democratic Republic.

Thanks Thomas Jefferson… and I guess Greece… because these mirrors are FAB!!  What makes these mirrors “Federal” style are the concave mirror (which is cool on it’s own), the eagle embellishment (so “Americana”) and a brass frame (with an awesome antique patina).

What I do NOT love about these mirrors are the price tag on them… for a legitimate Federal mirror, you’ll be paying in the thousands… easily.  Dang it!
However Google saves the day again, and after a few random searches, I learned that these were all the rage in the 1950’s, and a company called Syroco became famous for their molding technique where they were able to churn out exact replicas of these “eagle mirrors”.  I’ve also learned that they can be called “Bullseye Mirrors” as well… which helps when searching eBay and Etsy for replicas.
Seems like all the mirrors in the larger size I want will run between $60 and $150 which compared with thousands, is a steal!
I’m imagining this over our bed (like the first photo here) or even in an entry way – although a convex  mirror is not ideal for the last minute hair fixing before running out the door…
What do you think about these beauties?? Are you as into them as I am?

Zebra Cowhide Done Right

Hello Friends… I’m back!  Well technically I’ve been back for a week (how has a week passed by since sipping my margarita on the beach?!)  In the last week, I’ve been catching up on work, trying to catch up on sleep, and traveling like a mad woman for work, but I’m back in my schedule once more, and ready to talk zebra rugs.

Normally, when I hear “animal print” the words “overdone” “over-the-top” and “tacky” come to mind, but somehow zebra on a cowhide rug is classic in these spaces…

Here are a few guidelines for incorporating a zebra cowhide into your space in a classic way:

Mix textures:
The space below does a great job of it.  It has brass on the side table, an overstuffed and worn leather chair that looks like it was from grandpa’s study, and light weathered wood. This keeps the space feeling collected. In a word… Classic.

Keep a Neutral, Light Color Palette:
If you know what you’re doing, (or if you are going for a really over the top Moulin Rouge type vibe), feel free to bust out other bright colors and patterns in the same space, but if you are dabbling with zebra for the first time, neutral colors are a safer bet.  Black and white always looks chic, but shades of brown, taupe, tan, grey, and creme are also safe bets for mixing in.

This space is super chic with the all white furniture, glass top table (this really keeps the emphasis on the rug), and the complete absence of all other color – even the art is black, white, and grey!

Keep a Neutral, DARK Color Palette:
Yep… while the last rule was to keep a light color palette, the same rules apply to a dark color palette AS LONG AS you stay neutral.  Dark grey, chocolate, or black walls still maintain an uncomplicated look, and allow the rug to be center stage.  If you go this route, ensure the space is well lit – a big window offers plenty of natural light to keep it from feeling cave-like.  I can think of nothing worse than an animal skin rug in a cave-like setting.  #NOTclassic

Another important factor in making a zebra cowhide rug work with dark walls… accessories should be upscale and glam here.  Pretty gold frames, mirrored console / side tables, lucite lamps, etc.  The entryway below is a great example of how to keep the space feeling upscale.

Pair with Elegant Antique Pieces:
The ornate sconces and embellished chairs are also statement pieces (not to mention the silk curtain panels) but they are all within the same time period – very Louis XVI.  Among fancy-feeling antiques, the rug provides the graphic, modern punch that makes this space feel current.

Bring in natural elements:
Whether it’s placing the zebra cowhide rug in a sunroom surrounded by big trees in the yard, or simply bringing in fresh flowers or a leafy plant to the space, natural elements make the rug seem earthy and natural.

Bring in a Professional:
Ok, so let’s say you want to bring in lots of color, lots of pattern, complicated, cool accessories, AND a zebra print cow-hide rug… I’d advise you to hire a professional.  This little girls’ room is perfection, but could easily end up looking like a cluttered, visually confusing mess if done improperly.
So what about you??  Would you ever attempt a zebra print cow-hide rug??

Grey and White Palette

My best friend has decided – OFFICIALLY – to move to Chicago, and while I need to come to terms with it… I think I’ll stay in denial for a while longer…
Possibly the only good thing that will come out of her moving half-way across the country from me, is that I get to help her decorate her new place.
She recently mentioned that she’s been loving two things – chevron, and a grey and white palate – so I put together a few inspiration boards of how I envision her future Chicago living space…  It’s been a good long while since I’ve put together an inspiration board, and it feels good to be back in the game – creative juices flowing, and all!
She has the white Ektorp sofa from Ikea already, so I built everything based on the fact that she’ll likely be moving this with her.  She has always been fond of the shabby chic look and feel, but has been coming around to more contemporary styles (my personal favorite).
Keeping the feminine feel of the shabby chic with a light color palate, I’d say this inspiration board is contemporary meets feminine… You know I love a good graphic trellis pattern, and this rug is perfection.  This rug is on sale right now too!! $222 on sale at RugsUSA (50% off)… go get it!
The bold striped curtains are really fun, and could be easily swapped out for a solid white during the summer.  Even though both the curtains and the rug make a statement, the soft grey doesn’t distract, and the fun pillows and art bring in color.
I’ve been wanting a ginger jar lamp for the longest time, and these pale blue beauties seemed fitting to balance the pops of pink…
My second inspiration board takes girly to the extreme.  I kept details from the first inspiration, but incorporated more bold sweeps of blush (those curtains are not “pink”).  This is an apartment that CLEARLY belongs to a girly girl, but I think it’s still sophisticated, and adult.  Nothing about this says “little girls room”.
To balance out all the pink, I swapped in a bolder rug in dark grey chevron, and kept the lighting a little more quirky with a masculine brass reading lamp, and a fun ceramic owl lamp.
I LOVED the mint linen pillow, and the peach ikat is just fun.  During the winter months, it would be so easy to swap out the art for something black and white and moody, do switch out the peach pillows for faux fur.  Bring in some dark red (or snow white flowers), and do a cool Lucite tray on the table, and this room goes from summer to winter in a snap.
See what I mean??
So as fun as that was… I still think she should stay.  Chicago is sounding VERY far all of a sudden…

Black and White

You know what I found kind of funny this year after NY Fashion week??  Hearing every fashion magazine and editor try to put their spin on the trends they saw, and unanimously across the board the answer was “Black and White”.
Huh?  Was black and white ever NOT a trend?  It is the most classic, dramatic, lovely combination that will never go anywhere (in my ultra-professional opinion of course).  In home decor, in fashion, and everything in-between.  Black and white is here to stay…
These floors?  I mean, COME ON!  Perfection!

And how awesome is a dark black wall??  One of my newest obsessions this year. The curtains here are pretty fabulous too though….

Dual striped Roman Shades… so crisp, and so chic.  Makes me want to swap out my sweet yellow trellis roman shade for something more bold!
Wear it to work.  Wear it to dinner.  Wear it out with a sassy mini-skirt.  I am a total sucker for a black and white striped top.  I probably have at least 10 different styles in my closet right now.

Simple, and elegant.  I love the huge bronze lantern, claw foot table, and the glossy black door.  The clean white walls let the more ornate details shine.

Styling at it’s best!  I’ve seen mirrors with a similar “aged” finish sold from Ballard.  Obviously the real deal is best, but I love the look of the antique patina.

There is nothing more chic than black and white stripes in an outdoor space.  So french – right in the middle of any city!  I actually just got back from LA and the pool area at Hotel ShangriLA in Santa Monica has a fabulous black and white stripe thang going on.

Black and white goes mod in this little vignette.  It’s the “Twiggy” of entry tables, and how COOL is the tweed on the sliding drawer fronts.  It looks like suiting!  Love!
What a sophisticated work area.  I love the laquer boxes, glam chrome lamp bases, and the wide white stripe on the streamlined wingback chair, but the woven jug brings an earthy element to the mix…

This bathroom is so modern and glam and fabulous in every. single. way.  Nothing in here is anything I’d call my “taste” but I would die and go to heaven if this were a bathroom in my house.  That wallpaper is like Jonathan Adler graphics meets Metalica.  LOVE.

Seeing Spots

Polka dots are a classic, but I’ve been obsessed with irregular spotted prints most recently.  Patterns that are animal-esque.  Almost dalmation-esque.  Cruella DeVille would approve.

Spotted patterns are showing up everywhere, and while Kris thinks I’m on the verge of losing it (what else is new), I feel our house is NEEDING a splash of spots.
Case in point… this bench?!?!?!
Jenny Comenda got the memo long ago when she reupholstered this awesome bench…  looks great in every space she puts it.  LOVE.
What about that pillow?!?!?!
This awesome pillow from Furbish – an amazing source for home decor… bedding, pillows, furniture, art, entertaining… the online shop is amazing.  Highly encourage you to check it out.
And this chair?!?!?!
This chair is an Ikea hack if you can believe it or not.  Originally featured on Little Green Notebook, and later picked up by DecorPad, this stylish number cost next to nothing, and it’s a pretty close replica to the ultra pricey Brunschwig and Fils Snowleopard fabric.
Creativity at it’s best!
Holy spotted rug….
How fab is that?  And it’s a free-form cow hide.  I feel like I don’t even need to say any more!
And the grand finale… my favorite wallpaper of all time…
It’s a personal favorite of mine that I’ve blogged about before… the Thibaut Tanzania Animal print – comes in wallpaper and fabric, but I sort of favor the wallpaper.  It’s SO amazing.  And becuase I love it so SOOO much… here is my ALL TIME FAVORITE space that uses it.  It’s like wallpaper porn for me…

Tiffany Richey’s office?!?!  OMG.

So what do you think??  Have I totally changed your mind about what I lovingly refer to as the “dalmation trend”?
After bringing these images together, I’m THISCLOSE to pulling the trigger on the pillow from furbish…

Nailhead Makes Everything Better

Nailhead trim is big right now… like HUGE.  It’s not just contained to overstuffed club chairs and headboards anymore.  It’s running wild through the design world, making appearances on everything from side tables to stairwells, and everything in between…

A few of my favorites from around the web…

Isn’t this great inspiration for an Ikea hack??  You could totally recreate this look on this $20 coffee table from Ikea.  And it comes in white so if you’re feeling lazy, there is no painting required… you’re welcome in advance!

It amazes me how creative people can be.  I would NEVER have thought of applying nail head to trim out the walls in a hallway, and yet, it looks fabulous, and gives this space extra character.  Did you also notice that King Charles Cavalier in the background??  So freaking cute!
Nailhead on a valance!  I’m not a big “valance” person, but in a room with tall ceilings, this could be awesome.  The nailhead highlights the stair-step detail, and adds a even more glam on top of the already super luxe fabrics.
Unless you are super patient, super detail oriented, and have a VERY steady hand… a detailed nailhead trim is probably something best left to the professionals, but how awesome is this upholstered chest of drawers?!  No but seriously… raw linen stretched tight across these drawers??  I am having SO MANY ideas now about what I want to do with the dresser that goes in our room to replace the teeny tiny TV stand that’s currently in there… LOVE.
Nailheads are what is securing this natural fiber runner to these stairs… check this one out!  The stairs did not start off so pretty!
Have you heard of Home Decorators?  I hadn’t either, but I’m taking note!  This table looks like something from Restoration Hardware, but its under $300.  That’s a steal when you compare it with the several thousand dollar price tag RH slaps on everything!
Now THIS is unique.  I haven’t really seen a lot of inlaid upholstery on a chair back like this before, but I am loving how it looks.  The chair is as interesting from the back as it is from the front – which is rare!  Wouldn’t this be great in a shabby chic kitchen nook or in a pretty feminine office?
Nailhead and leather dress these cabinets up… I believe this is someone’s ultra fabulous closet.  A girl can dream….
And one of my favorites… this site is crazy addicting, featuring tons of great Ikea hacks.  This one is very similar to the first photo inspiration I posted about here, but uses the lack side table… well technically one and a half Lack side tables… use the one full Lack and the top from the other to secure to the bottom.  Pure genius considering these tables are only $9 each!

To Fret or not to Fret

I’m not talking about worrying – I’m talking about fretwork, which I am completely in love with. Obviously.  Perhaps its my love of the trellis pattern that admittedly I overuse (on rugs, pillows, window treatments, and anywhere else I can put it).  I love how fretwork takes the intricate trellis pattern and turns it 3D, creating yet another awesome way to incorporate trellis into design.

I may be a bit biased, but I think it works in so many different spaces…

In an outdoor patio…

White on white… in a super modern bath

Behind a contemporary vanity… don’t get me started on ALL. THAT. STORAGE.  Dah!

Running down a whimsical stairwell – wouldn’t that be the most magical staircase to a child’s playroom – in the dream house of my dreams’ dreams…

Behind matching twin beds…

Could these Chinese Chippendales be any more gorgeous??  Ugh!  I want!

Fretwork makes the entrance to this dining room so dramatic, and frames the room beautifully…

Accordion Style

Can you tell what it is in this picture that has me enamored??

Source

If you guessed the brushed bronze accordion style table in the forefront, than you’d be right on the money!!

Industrial chic is back in a big way – just ask Restoration Hardware.

Now that we are making progress in the living room, and I’ve crossed a few things off my never-ending list, I am thinking about what kind of chair I’d like to replace the wicker chair that’s currently in there.

Once I start thinking about what chair to put in there, I start to think… well do we need one chair or two?  If we have a chair that people actually use (as opposed to one that I just like to look at), then what will people set their drink down on… the coffee table is a long ways away.  And so then I start thinking about what kind of table would look cool, be functional, and still be small enough not to get in the way or look awkward floating in the middle of the room next to our chair.

See what happens when I start thinking about chairs??  If you give a Mouse a Cookie… (have you read that story?? If not, please do)

I mean how sweet are these little tables – narrow yet functional – this one here is just tucked away in the corner…

Source
And look how sweet this little accordion table looks tucked into this reading nook.  I decided to do a little recon, and see what I could come up with online…

This one is from Urban Outfitters, and it’s only $64!!  I mean COME ON!!  $64??  I spent more than that at happy hour last night!  And let me just say, this table does not look like $64.  Thank you Urban Outfitters – this is definitely better than the fake glasses and $50 t-shirts you sell.

And then after that steal… I found this one.  Holy cow, did you see the at price tag on this baby??? DEFINITELY out of my budget (yeahhh, not going to spend nearly a grand on a teeny tiny table), but I love the shiny brass finish, and the marble top – so pretty!

This beauty comes from the same seller as the $800 brass table, but its a) cheaper b) shorter c) wider.  I am LOVING the mirrored top too… more room to put my book, remote control and glass of wine!

What do you think of these little accordion wonders?  I’m in loveeeee.

Office Space

Sooo… you know how I had mentioned I’d just started a new job??  Well everything has been amazing so far!  It’s all really fast paced, I LOVVEEE my coworkers (kind of helps that we were friends beforehand…) and I really feel like I’m getting into my groove.

Our office is downtown, in one of the oldest buildings on Montgomery.  I feel like a total grown up walking through the financial district every morning, and love looking up to the tops of the skyscrapers.

The entry to our building is stunning – really intricate tile floors, amazing stonework, and gilded elevators.  It’s really hard to tell from this picture of the elevators, but between the gold are bits of really deep emerald green, and it looks so freaking amazing.
The inside of our office is however… well let’s just say it leaves something to be desired.

Woof.  The walls are painted in the same god awful off-white paint as my landlord had painted every single wall, cabinet, and crown molding in our apartment (it just looks DIRTY).  The beige carpet is as boring as it gets, and it comes complete with mystery stains, and don’t even get me started on the faux wood desks and matching bookshelves.

For a building with tons of history and character, this office has NO character.

Luckily, I can see past the drab paint, and old carpet, and I have grand ideas for what I’d eventually like to do with my office – it has a ton of potential, with large windows letting in lots of natural light during the day, high ceilings, and plenty of space.

On my to do list, I plan on….

Bringing in Interest with a Graphic Rug!!

Aside from covering up the mystery stains in the carpet, a big graphic rug will give some much needed visual interest and character to this otherwise colorless and lifeless space.  I’m thinking black and white or navy and white – nothing too jarring (orange anyone??) and something I will want to take with me if I ever leave.

Bringing in some lighting!!

The lighting in any office building is awful .. those overhead fluorescent bulbs??  Aside from being unflattering, it also gives me a terrible headache, so I keep it off whenever I can. I love how the funky lamp on the desk here doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that would pretty much solve the issue of overhead lighting.  I also love how the desk is turned to face the window… genius!

Styling (and painting) the Bookshelves!!

A bevy of books make a big visual impact on this wall.  I have a few hideous bookshelves in my office, that if pushed together and painted a charcoal grey (with the approval of our office manager of course) could make a lovely statement.  It’s a real talent to be able to style a bookshelf – Jenny of Little Green Notebook has written several very helpful articles organizing books.  I wish I could just take these built ins and magically transport them in here!

Bringing in some Art with Character!!

Source: Vogue

Great art.  Perhaps the hardest thing to achieve, but it makes such an imact in a room.  It brings the walls to life, and inspires the work you do, and since I spend at least 8 hours a day at work, I want to feel inspired by the things around me.  With 20 foot ceilings, I’ll be on the hunt for some larger scale pieces and interesting frames…  can we also talk about the chair??  What I wouldn’t give to snag that!

Accessorizing, Accessorizing, Accessorizing!!

Finally, what this space needs to make it feel like mine, are some small personal touches – a stack of books, a few candles, and a sweet little tray to corral everything together.

And that lamp??  Amazing.  Don’t even get me started.

I Dream of this Wallpaper!!

No Source

If I really had free reign over my office, I’d wallpaper it from top to bottom with the amazing Tanzania print from Thibaut Design.  It’s busy for sure, but the small scale of the print makes it almost a neutral… no?  Every space I’ve seen it in, I die all over again.  One day – even if it’s in my home office, I will have this wallpaper.
