Jonathan Adler… I love you!

Jonathan Adler = AMAZING!!

If you have not had the opportunity to go to one of his stores, you are missing out on one of life’s true joys!  Luckily, there is an adorable shop nestled in my neighborhood here in San Francisco, and Kris can attest – I drag him in every single time we walk past. We could be on our way home from breakfast, on our way to coffee, or trying to hail a cab, but I have to go in, and if it’s closed, I have to press my nose against the window to ohh-and-ahh over the new displays.
His stuff is mod, edgy, colorful, fun, a little irreverent, and a total throwback to our parent’s era… which makes it classic again!  How does he do that?!
Everything is unique, and feels one of a kind which I absolutely love – you could pretty much walk in there with a blindfold, pick something up, and end up falling in love with it.  I’ve put together a little gift guide / wish list that is ALL Jonathan Adler.  Perfect for a special gift – for birthdays, Christmas, or housewarming…

Pretty much any pillow in his collection is to die for, but I really love this chevron stripe and Ipanema throw pillow – fabulous together or separately.  I also love the graphic orange “Richard Nixon” throw (how does he come up with these names??)

This pretty blue and gold Santorini Pandora box would be perfect to hold jewelry in your bedroom, or even paperclips in a chic home office, and how cute is this little silver fox figurine.  We call my dad our silver fox, so this would be a wonderful (and funny) gift for him.

Another great (and inexpensive gift) is this coffee table book, and I for one REALLY want it (hint hint).

These chic zebra print nesting trays are the perfect gift for the hostess in your life, and don’t you think that this pretty orange and pink print coffee mug would make early mornings a little happer??  I do.

The next few are larger investments, but a few that I would die of happiness to own – how cool is this Sputnik Chandelier??  It would make any dining room a really special space.  And that
black chippendale arm chair?? You KNOW I’ve been lusting after these forever (remember this post from last March??)  And finally, the Navy Louis Arm Chair – Joan Rivers and the “Fashion Police” team on E! have their entire studio decked out in Jonathan Adler, and what else do they sit on??  This throne.  AMAZING.

I want it all!!

Pretty in Pink

Isn’t this room the epitome of luxe?!
I am 100% certain that Kris would die if he came home to pink curtains in our living room, but one day after we win the lotto and make it rich, I will have a ladies only sitting room that looks just like this.  Bright and cheery – the pink adds just the right amount of sass, don’t you think??.  This room will be dedicated to book club (aka wine club), rousing discussions of Real Housewives, and crafting parties.  As I said… ladies only.
Alas, if you are a single gal living on your own, or your man has been perfectly trained to say, Whatever you want, honey (my favorite phrase, by the way), then get to work on recreating this dream room, and don’t look back!
I love how the soft greige (beige / grey) wall color, and white furniture keep this from being over the top girly, and brown is a natural compliment to pink.  It’s like they were born to be together.
This coffee table is pretty much what I am looking for to replace ours one day – I love the gold metal, and glass top, and I love that it is BIG, so it can hold a lot of stuff on the shelf below.  Add a few mirrored pieces to reflect light (and your pretty face of course) keep the floor neutral and fuctional, so there is no competition with the draperies, and you’ll be sitting pretty.  Take a look at my design board for a little inspiration…
If you are going to do it up right, I’d go custom on the curtains.  That can get expensive, so if you are handy with a sewing machine, this could be perfect for you.  I found these curtains on Linens and Things, and they are a steal if you are trying to recreate this look on a budget, but I still feel they are no comparison with the perfectly peachy silk drapes in the original room.  Dying white silk could be another option, but I am definitely no expert there, so I wouldn’t attempt it unless you were pretty confident on the outcome.
The other option here is to have someone else sew them – there are plenty of local seamstresses who could whip up some curtains for relatively cheap, so if you shop around, and find the perfect fabric, that is another way to go.
RugsUSA is literally my favorite source for rugs now – this huge woven number is a steal when comparing with places like Pottery Barn, or even local shops.  Etsy’s pillow selection is insane, and there are amazing deals to be found.  A word of caution – if you want the pattern on both sides, be sure to confirm they don’t use a solid backing on one side to cut costs.  Sometimes, it’s just worth it to pay more.
This mirror is from ZGallerie, and I’ve been lusting after it for some time now – it’s HUGE (and quite heavy) so for our apartment, we’d need to put some serious holes in the wall to support it’s weight.  Mounting this with anchors just isn’t worth it for us renters, but if you own your home, this mirror measures 39.5″ across – that’s over 3 feet!  A statement for sure, and it’s on sale for $214.  Someone needs to benefit from this if it’s not me!
Finally, Ballard was my source for the sofa and chair.  Elegant lines, good quality… need I say more??  The reviews online were rave, so I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment.
Enjoy the where to buy guide below, and of course, if anyone has interest in a custom design board for a room they are working on, send me a private message!

Citrus Garlands – Inspiration and Tutorial

Is this holiday mantle just to die for, or what??  I just love the lush garland draped over the hearth, heavy with citrus fruit, and evergreen branches.  I can almost smell it!

You might think oranges and lemons are better left for the summer months, but I beg to differ!  Look how fabulous this tree is!

And another peek of the tree up close…

By mixing the citrus with gold and bronze bulb ornaments, it feels fresh, but still traditional, and you can imagine how pretty it is at night.

A few of the oranges have been embellished with thumbnails – clever!  It reminds of me being little – my sister and I would be enlisted to puncture a few oranges with cloves.  The smell is intoxicating.  I can’t even explain it!

And just look at that staircase!!  It has another massive garland adorned with more citrus – it’s as lovely as the first.

While it’s a simple idea, it has a huge impact – especially against that black and white wall.

I knew I’d seen a DIY online for a pretty citrus garland (since these are EXTREMELY expensive if ordered from a florist), and sure enough… I had bookmarked one about a year ago!

Oh Happy Day is my go-to for anything crafty, and party related.  A few years back, they posted this FABULOUS tutorial on putting together a pretty citrus garland.

Their tutorial is wonderful, but to add the holiday look and feel of the garlands above, be sure to incorporate pine or evergreen branches, some gold ribbon, and a few pine cones!

Ornament Garland DIY

Hello hello and happy Monday!

I’m all tuckered out from the MANY holiday parties we went to over the weekend, but despite the back-to-back party schedule, I still managed to fit in a little DIY project that I’ve been dying to try!

Kate of Centsational Girl created a beautiful, blingy garland for her holiday mantle that I just had to have!  Using her tutorial, and these photos for inspiration, I set out to make one of my own.

Trust me when I say that this project could not be easier!

I bought one large multipack of silver ornaments from target, along with three smaller sized packs to vary the size and shape of the ornament clusters.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t find floral wire, fishing wire, or even a thin rope at the store, but they did have wired garlands with stars all over it, so I figured that was close enough to get the job done.

I laid everything out first into a little assembly line, and got to work threading varying ornaments onto the wire garland.

And the final result??

A really pretty (really easy to make) holiday garland for our hallway!  I’d originally been thinking of doing this garland in golds and bronze colors, but I think the cool colors of the silver and gunmetal look really pretty with the blue table.

I’m still working on styling the table, since the two potted red amaryllis plants that were there earlier this week didn’t look right with the wintery looking garland. In my dream world, I’d have two mini evergreen trees here, but alas, it’s all a bit too much for our teeny hallway.

In the end, this garland ended up being around 4 feet long, which is perfect for it to serpentine around the top of the table, and the best part is, that if I ever want to add to it, I can tie more wire onto the existing garland, and thread on more ornaments.

Ornament garland… SUCCESS!

O Christmas Tree

The lights are on, and the ornaments hung!  My favorite thing about these long nights, is coming home, and lighting the tree.  It’s so pretty and I love to turn the rest of the lights off when it’s on.  It makes the room glow, and it just feels very magical.

A lot of people have “themes”  for their tree, but I love the ritual every year of hanging the ornaments I’ve collected.  My favorite ornaments are a pair of white mittens, some ballet slippers, and a puppy in a paint can (cause he is just too cute!)  Tradition all the way!

Dear Santa…

The hardest thing in the world is putting together a Christmas List for “Santa” when you feel like you have everything you already want.  Well not EVERYTHING, but trust me – it’s hard!
Yesterday I sent my Christmas List off to Mrs. Claus and Santa (aka, Mom and Dad), and here is what topped the list this year…

1. A cozy Down Vest.  I always see girls walking around wearing these, and while adorable, they never seemed that functional to me.  If it’s cold, wear a jacket… right?? WRONG!  I borrowed my mom’s vest one day, and realized the beauty of it.  On brisk days, you can still feel the cool air, but you’re warm and toasty at the same time.  I’d compare it to sleeping with one foot out of the blankets.  It’s refreshing, right??  Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this!

2. A Clarisonic.  Everyone who has one swears its life changing, and who am I to say “no” to beautiful, glowy skin??  The thing that sealed the deal for me was a woman I met on our trip to Cabo this year.  She was a facialist in LA, and kept talking about her daughters who were in their 30’s.  I finally had to ask her how old she was, and she said 57!  She looked 40.  It was absurd.  Her secret??  She claimed it was the Clarisonic but I’m betting it’s also about having good genes (which luckily, I do).

3. Hello TopShop, and welcome to Nordstrom.  Another wish for this year is this adorable Navy Peplum Top.  Peplum is a look that flatters my figure, and I love the idea of wearing this with trousers and a cardigan for work, and a pencil skirt and a pretty statement necklace for a nice weekend dinner.

4. I found a seller on Etsy that makes the most adorable statement necklaces, and I’ve kind of fallen in love with this Navy Bubble, and this Turquoise Bubble necklace.  Amazing right?  And they are $16 each.  Ridiculous!

5. Last week, I fell head over heels for this french bulldog sweater from JCrew.  Unfortunately, they are sold out, but how cute is this little Fox Sweater?  Dare I say it, I may love the fox even a little more!

6. If you’ve read my little blog for a while, you know that my love affair with this Pave Link Bracelet from JCrew started a long time ago.  It’s still up at the top of my wishlist for fabulous accessories.  Love LOVEEEE.

7. No, my wish isn’t to look like a Victoria’s Secret Model… well it is, but it’s not what I asked for at least!  In the winter, my favorite thing to do after work, is to get into my pajamas as soon as I walk through the door.  Unfortunately, my old sweatshirts and sweatpants have seen better days.  Wouldn’t it be fun to lounge around in these adorable Leopard Pajamas?  Who says you can’t be comfortable, warm, and still super sassy??

Bedroom Updates

Over the Holiday Break, I plan on finally making some serious progress on our bedroom!  Yep – it only took me a full year of inspiration boards, varying color combinations, and swearing up and down that this room was next on my list.

Yesterday, our BEAUTIFUL new rug arrived after being back-ordered for a month.  Remember this post where I agonized over the creme colored rug vs. the navy??  Well, my practical side won this fight, and I ended up opting for the creme colored trellis, and as undecided as I was in the moment, I could not be happier!  It is super luxe in person, and I can’t wait to roll it out in the bedroom.  RugsUSA – I heart you.  I really do.

If you like this rug, you can find it here

An update on our bed… Kris and I have decided that a new mattress will be our Christmas gift to each other.  I had no clue that a good mattress ran around $4K, so while it’s no puppy with a big red bow around it’s neck, it’s dang good present in my humble opinion. I’m so excited for a good night’s sleep, and no back pain when I wake up (god, I sound like I’m 90 years old saying things like that!)

The other part of this present for ourselves??  New bedding!

I ordered a few options during Macys’ Friends and Family Sale last week – did anyone else hit them up for 60% off??  Holla!

Everything has shipped, so the bedding should be arriving towards the end of this week!  Yippy!

First option is the soothing creme colored bedding.  This would mean that our entire room would be light colors with creme colored carpet, creme drapes, and creme bedding.  Hey, we don’t have kids… we can do things like this!!

I’m not a huge fan of those faux french looking throw pillows, but I love the quilt-like comforter and European shams.  Definitely looking forward to seeing this one in person…
Option number two is actually one I’ve had my eye on for a while – its an abstract paisley with a pale blue background.  I love the quilted coverlet in this photo as well, so I was sure to order that too.  This option definitely lends more visual interest with the pattern, but I’m not sure how these colors will translate in person.  Is that tan going to look olive in person?  Gold?  How will the fabric feel?

Regardless, since we are upgrading our mattress from a queen to a king, we’ll need new bedding one way or another, so at least we have some initial options!

Here’s how I see the room coming together with each…

What do you think? Yay, or nay?  Should I keep looking?

I think I need to see the fabrics in person, and get everything in the room to really decide which one is the keeper!

Holiday Fashion Guide

The month of December is most obviously one of the busiest times of the year, where my social calendar is packed with festive get-togethers, holiday shopping, and spiked eggnog around every turn.  The last thing I want to worry about is what to wear at the last minute, so I’ve put together some holiday fashion inspiration, to keep me focused despite the chaos.

Holiday Lunch:
Whether it’s an upscale lunch with friends downtown, or a swanky client lunch for work, a head to toe look with winter white is chic, and simple to pull together.  Look for a creamy white in luxe fabrics like silk, silk-cashmere blends, and cashmere.  These fabrics will keep you warm in chilly weather, and the fabric will drape in a really pretty way.  One thing to be cautious of is cheap fabrics – since it’s a monocromatic look, poor quality will be very easy to spot.  Also, when doing all white, do not go for anything too form fitting.  It will accentuate every flaw, and nothing looks cheaper than tight, white clothing.

Holiday Lunch

Moschino wool shirt / Tulle Clothing / 3.1 Phillip Lim / Vince Camuto taupe high heels / Estée Lauder lip makeup, $29

Office Holiday Party:
You may be attending a fancy dinner or cocktail hour for your Office holiday party, but do not forget for a moment that you are with co-workers, and you are still essentially “at work.”  This means, if you wouldn’t wear it in front of your grandmother, then you shouldn’t be wearing it at all.  A good rule of thumb: nothing too low (ie: cleavage bearing), nothing too short (your skirt shouldn’t be more than 3″ above the knee), and nothing too tight (this is pretty self explanatory).  A classic red sheath dress is still festive and feminine, classic pearl accessories will pop against the bright color, and a little leopard clutch never hurt anyone.  Trust me when I say, nearly every office has that one person who is going to break out the too short, backless ensemble – do not be that person!

Office Holiday Party

Roksanda Ilincic wool crepe dress, $1,255 / Forever New , $94 / B Brian Atwood peep toe pumps / Dorothy Perkins clutch handbag / Kate Spade pearl necklace / Majorica pearl jewelry

Christmas Shopping
I think we’ve all made this mistake before – wearing your very cutest “It’s Christmas-time in the City” outfit to hit the stores, only to regret those stiletto boots an hour into your shopping expedition.  If you haven’t, you are one of the lucky ones, but take it from me – there is NOTHING worse than aching feet, when tromping from store to store.  Comfort is key – flat or nearly flat boots with good support will be your best friend, and I am a huge fan of leggings with a long tunic sweater or sweater dress.  You will be super comfortable, and chic enough to stop into Nieman’s for a quick latte mid-day.

Christmas Shopping

Fat Face knit top, $72 / Green coat / Oasis legging, $18 / Clarks high heel shoes / Barbour leather satchel handbag, $320 / Dolce&Gabbana dolce gabbana, $515 / Estée Lauder lip makeup, $29

Christmas Dinner
I know a lot of people who spend Christmas Day in their pajamas, and everyone wears their elastic waist pants to dinner.  If that’s your family, you can skip this part, because I am a firm believer in making Christmas dinner a special event.  Evening gowns not required, but I think a cute sweater dress, patterned lace tights, and a pair of these gold capped pumps would make the perfect ensemble to gather with family, open gifts, and eat a delicious meal together.  It’s church appropriate, comfortable enough to get through plenty of that roast, and the tights will help save your legs from the cold during the annual after dinner walk through the neighborhood to see the lights.

Christmas Dinner

rag & bone long sleeve dress / Hooded cape coat / Forever 21 patterned tight / Mango cap toe pumps, $115 / Hermès yellow gold bangle bracelet / Alexis Bittar gold bangle / Love Rocks chunky necklace / Enamel jewelry

Weekend Recap

The holidays have arrived at our house – at least partially!

I had grand plans to get all of our holiday decor up over the weekend, but that changed as soon as the stormy weather hit.  Like a spell, all I wanted to do was hibernate under a blanket with my new US Magazine (Jessica Simpson is pregnant again?!) and a marathon of Honey BooBoo.  It was amazing.

Despite the fact that I stayed in sweats for the vast majority of the weekend, I did manage to get SOME of the Christmas decorations put up.

Case in point – my pretty boxwood wreath!

Isn’t it just lovely??

I got some pretty gold ribbon, and hung the wreath from the curtain rod to avoid putting more holes in the wall.  As a side note, wouldn’t it be lovely if our dining room had beautiful double windows like this? Alas, it’s just a reflection from our floor to ceiling mirror.

While most of my ornaments are still in storage, I had a few new ones from my mama, that have made their way into a few small bowls in the living room.  And if you look REAL close, you can see the reflection of me… in my sweats.  Shocking, eh?

My honey came home on Friday with some red roses, that looked very Christmas-y next to the ornaments and some greenery.  The greenery is actually from a tree on our street that blew down in the storm – it was REALLY windy, to say the least.

And our tree – we managed to get out of the house after the storm passed. We get our tree from the school around the corner from our house, and walk it back home like true city dwellers.

Now, I’m not sure if the Noble Fir weighs significantly more than the Douglas Fir that we normally get, or if this tree was completely waterlogged after three days of rain, but it was HEAVY.  No joke – this thing is probably close to 100 lbs.  Luckily we got it home, up the stairs, and into our apartment without killing each other, and after a few tries, finally got it straight in the stand.  Fingers crossed I don’t come home tonight to find it toppled over like last year.

I am happy that the rain has passed, and that our house is starting to look (and feel) like Christmas!

Happy Monday!

Frenchie!!

I’ve tried to resist, but I think it’s time to give in!  Jcrew’s little frenchie sweater has made it’s rounds in all the magazines, blogs, and must-have lists this fall, it’s not hard to see why!  He is just the cutest!

I especially love how StyleScribe styled it with a cute navy mini and oatmeal coat draped over the shoulders.  Is there anything more “east coast collegiate” than a wool coat draped over your shoulders??
I kind of feel stalkerish posting this photo from The Rose Record, but Katie’s little frenchie could not be cuter, and the striped button down underneath the sweater is awesome – espeically with the sleeves rolled up.

And how is this for adorable??  A bright yellow pencil skirt, a large print navy checker shirt, and brown leather accessories!

I think it’s final… I NEED this sweater (and a yellow pencil skirt!)
