Stunning Diamond Solitaire

In advance, you are welcome for a little ring porn on this glorious Friday!

One of my girlfriends got engaged recently, and her ring is phenomenal.  The band is way too large for my left hand, but it fits like a glove on my right (yes, I totally tried it on… I’m shameless).

On a separate topic, is it normal that my right hand is a vastly different size from my left??

Urban Dream

I recently discovered Urban Dream’s Photography on Etsy, and since I’ve been toying with the idea of a gallery wall in our living room, I’m looking for some new art…

Here are a few “befores” that we can base all the “afters” on….

This one was taken a few days ago when the morning sun was really bright and happy – I love that our living room has a full wall of windows that make the room so bright before I even head out for work!

This one was taken last winter – obviously the decor has changed a bit with the addition of my new throw pillows and a new rug

As you can see, this wall is blah – totally uninspired.  The “artwork” is from Ikea (shocking), and aside from being boring, there are some other real problems with this wall.  For one thing, the frames are crooked – just slightly, but it’s enough to drive me CRAZY.  The frames were also hung too high for the couch, but after 30 holes in the wall, I was not about to hammer in 30 more to move these bad boys down.  Finally… one of the frames doesn’t have any glass! It shattered during our move, and you can definitely tell in this picture.  The one on the left doesn’t have a reflection because of the missing glass.  Not that it stopped me from still hanging it on the wall.  Ha!

To say that this wall needs a face-lift is an understatement.

So this brings me back to my original topic of Urban Dream.  Their photography is dreamy, and they have a whole San Francisco collection.  A few of my favorites??

Is there anything more synonymous with San Francisco than the bell of the trolley?? I think not – my first apartment in the city was a block down from a main trolley line, and you could hear them in the night when you were cozy in bed – I loved that sound… the sound of living in a city.

This photo, using a Bokeh technique is so pretty – the Ferry Building at dusk.  I want this one for sure – with the deep blues, I think it will look really nice in the living room with our blue/grey rug.

Sailboats will forever remind me of my father, and this picture at sunset just makes me smile.  I believe it’s taken at the Marina Green – one of the best views in the city.

An unpainted version of the painted ladies – speaking of, Full House was on TV the other night.  THAT was a throwback to my childhood!!  I love the high contrast setting in this picture – really REALLY cool.

Kris will have some appreciation of this picture, although I’m sure he’ll insist that I frame on of him surfing instead… I’m sure that can be arranged, but I just love the dramatic craggy rocks, and the foamy waves.Would it be weird to have a gallery wall based entirely around San Francisco, or is that awesome?  Obviously I’ll need to incorporate a few other pieces in, but I am leaning heavily toward the trolley, and the Ferry Building here.  And the sailboat…. heck I love them all!Check out the rest of Urban Dream’s collections here!

Black Rimmed Glasses

My eyesight has been pretty much perfect my entire life, but living working in an office, and staring at a computer screen all day has taken it’s toll, and I am beginning to think that I may need glasses.

I started coming to this conclusion when it became hard to read street signs from halfway down the block.  I chalked it up to a glare on the sign.  Most recently, the problem is with seeing things at night, and I notice that all the lights are much more twinkly than I remember – while extra twinkly lights are very pretty, it does not make for a good situation when I’m the chosen driver at night.  The conclusion?? My eyes are getting old.  Sad Face.

While this has been one of the first signs that I’m not the youngest spring chicken in the coop anymore, (well this, and the fact that I pulled my back out for the first time this year) the realization that I need glasses is particularly not good news since I hate the idea of wearing glasses.  Unfortunately for me, I hate the idea of putting my finger in my eye more.  Sooo… glasses it is!

Since my theory that my eyesight will revert to its 20/20 status if I wait long enough isn’t working out in my favor, I’ve been giving some thought to what type of glasses I might like.  Who knew there were so many options out there!!  Should I go frameless (to avoid distracting people from your face too much)?  Wire frame?  Round?  Square? Tapered? Narrow? Tortoise? Patterned?  There are a lot of options, and it seems that everyone has an opinion.

While I’m not totally sure what I DO want, I know what I DON’T want.  I don’t want to look like an old lady (most importantly) and I don’t want want to be constantly aware that I am wearing glasses.  One of the things that annoys me the most about glasses is when you wear small frames, and can see the edge of the frame in your periphery.  That will not work.  This is why I’m thinking of jumping on the larger frame bandwagon.

Thick rimmed glasses are EVERYWHERE, and with a larger lens, they are not only functional, but I actually think they are are cute!  Am I just buying into the hype?

I mean this girl looks pretty happy in them…

And Scarlet Johanson thinks they are pretty cool too…

A few girls on my team at work (who are all 22 by the way) keep telling me that thick frames are “totally in”.  I believe one of them said, (and I quote), “I even have a fake pair that I wear on days that I want to look smart.”  Oh sweetie… add that to the list of things to not say to your boss.  I am judging you.

22 year olds aside, I think I might try on a few pairs to form my own opinion.  My mom had a large pair of glasses when we were little, and as all fashion statements do, they went out of style and have boomeranged back again.  I should probably invest in these now, so I can become the cool mom and swap them out in 15 years when my kids notify me that I am “SOOO 2012.”

More updates on the glasses situation to come…

DIY Mirror

This mirror is adorable, right?!! It looks like it could have come from Restoration Hardware or Pottery Barn, but believe it or not, it’s a DIY project that cost less than $15!  Unbelievable!
I stumbled across this DIY on Pinterest, and after clicking through, discovered the most adorable blog, Shanty 2 Chic – a blog all about putting in some extra time to turn inexpensive pieces into something amazing.  I love that for a little elbow grease, you can save big bucks, and walk away with something fabulous.  My personal opinion?? This mirror looks WAY more expensive than it is!
In my early 20’s I didn’t know a lot about the power of a little DIY – how I wish sites like Pinterest existed back then!!  Unfortunately, they didn’t, so being totally naive, I bought stuff to merely fill the space we lived in.  The goal was to avoid spending a lot of money and come away with something that looked nice enough. This meant that a lot of my stuff was scored on Craigslist (I was literally the queen of Craigslist for a while) and Ikea.  While I am still absolutely in love with some of my Craigslist finds (antique dining room table and chairs for $50!!), I am growing tired of the shoddy quality and generic feel of a lot of my purchases.
The coffee table and side tables in our living room came as a set, and when I originally purchased them at 23 years old, I thought nothing was more elegant and classy than matching furniture sets.  WOOF.  Live and learn I guess…
I am slowly in the process of trying to replace a lot of the black clunky furniture with pieces in varying materials – metal, glass, naturally stained wood… the list goes on.  I’ve even busted out some spray paint to make some quick fixes to some of our inexpensive pieces… I literally reached a breaking point with the all black furniture everywhere.
While the coffee table and side tables in the living room are there to stay – at least for now… or until they finally give out – there is a matching black framed mirror hanging on the wall that is begging for a makeover.
I think this DIY might be in my very near future…
For the full tutorial, check it out at Shanty 2 Chic! Trust me when I say that you will end up losing a solid hour of your work day browsing through all their amazing ideas.  The two sisters that write this blog seem so normal, and relatable, and crafty!  Makes me want to call my sister right now!!

Fall Decor Updates

Last night I hit up World Market after work, to pick up a few things to update our home for fall.  Target is a bit of a trek from San Francisco – there is a new one that opened downtown but it is so crowded, I need a Xanax before I take that on!

Anyway, my problem with World Market is limiting my purchases because things can get out of hand quickly in there!

My favorite things??  This awesome little white pumpkin dish – right now it’s empty, but I plan on getting some candy corn in there ASAP.  I happen to love me some candy corn, and eat it by the handfuls every Halloween.

I also love the new pumpkin spice potpuri I got (don’t you love the autumnal colors) and my little owl candle!  He is the cutest little thing… I couldn’t resist!

I also hit up Trader Joes on the way home, and got some fresh flowers and fresh produce.  I think both are very harvest-y… right??

Kris came home and was VERY excited for the artichokes (one of his favorite things), and seeing those sunflowers this morning before work just made me smile.  The house smells like pumpkin pie, and I’m heading home for a little candy corn feast tonight. It’s the little things that make me really happy sometimes…

Fall Fashion: Jcrew Collection

Damn you Jcrew and your awesome emails!  I got totally sucked in this morning when I innocently opened an email from them, and their Fall collection is amazing.

I LOOOOVED their Schoolboy blazer in velvet – especially in the bright Yellow, and the Mallard Green – it looks so luscious and rich…

The Double Cloth Symphony Coat was another favorite – very Jackie O with the classic cut, but the double pocket on one side makes this fresh and modern.

The color block Shearling Trench was another favorite, but at over $1000 for a coat, I think I’ll just admire this one from afar

I am all about the crisp look of cropped trousers and these wild prints stood out from the rest.  I think I’ll likely stick to a solid (but bright) color since I don’t need to see honey comb streched across my thighs, but for the size zeros out there, please wear these so I can live vicariously through you!!

This geometric skirt makes me want to step up my work wardrobe.  My company is pretty casual, but I think a skirt like this would make me really excited to come into the office!
Hats off to the buyers at Jcrew – I’m going to give their Fall Collection an A+

Fall Wishlist

I know I am not the only gal with a closet full of clothes yet nothing to wear.  Shopping really can become an addiction since everyone loves new pretty things, but after doing a big “fall” shopping spree earlier this summer, I am trying to pare down the rest of my wishlist to impactful items that will be as practical as they are pretty.
I have so many blouses, and sweaters, skinny jeans, and high heels.  What I NEED are the statement pieces to mix in that will make a… statement (for lack of better words).
First up on my list is a Fur Trimmed Coat:

It doesn’t have to be real fur – faux fur is fine by me, but I think that there is something really lovely about a fluffy soft fur trim.  Obviously this fur trimmed number is quite a bit out of my price range (dang you Burberry), but isn’t it fabulous with the leather sleeve detail and the belted waist?  Makes me wish it were January already (and that I had a disposable income).
These ones are also really cute!

Also on my wish list is a sweater or top with an embellished collar
Jcrew hits the nail on the head with this pretty herringbone sweater with jeweled collar.  I can imagine this gussied up with a short full pleated skirt, or even with cropped slacks for work.  Another more versatile option are the collar necklaces I’ve been seeing ALL OVER the place.  Literally, once Forever21 gets a hold of a trend, you know it’s mainstream.
Karl Amber crystal and bead-embellished cotton collar Silver Metallic Peter Pan Collar
The collar on the left from net-a-porter isn’t exactly inexpensive, but would give a really similar effect as the beaded Jcrew collar, however the collar necklace on the right  is a steal at just $12 – I just LOVE a good deal!
Chevron is all the rage, and after making a permanent home in my home (via a few really awesome throw pillows, storage bins, and a blanket) I’m sort of dying for some chevron in my wardrobe.
A few of my favorite looks I’ve seen are this dress from shop sosie… don’t you just LOVE the back on it?  So adorable for a dressy date night!
I also adore this embellished top (chevron and sequins?? perfection) along with this chiffon dress.  Unfortunately, neither of these photos have sources (dang you Pinterest), so if you come across their origin let me know!
I’ve been talking about Peplum since last year, but haven’t found one that fits my long torso yet – I saw a great one from H&M recently that reminds me a lot of this one, but need to get into a store to try it on!  I like that it’s edgy and ladylike with the pencil skirt – I’m not entirely sure I can pull this look off, but I’m sure going to try!
Finally, I like to invest in one quality cozy sweater per year (last year it was a lavender cowl neck that felt like a warm hug) – this year I am thinking about a cape version of the chunky sweater.  I have a few capes that I wear to death, and so I’m on the hunt for an equally awesome one in a warm knit.
I’m sure that as the months pass there will be more wishes on this wish list, but these are the one’s I just can’t seem to stop thinking about!!

Fall is Here!!

Photo via Pottery Barn (where else?)
I don’t know what happened, but all of a sudden this morning, something in me switched, and it’s fall.  Going by technicality, it’s still summer until September 22, but to me, it’s fall now so I am bound and determined to go home tonight, and get out some of my “fall” decor to replace some of the more summery things.
What will I be switching out??
1. The Wreath on the Front Door
Right now, we have a really pretty summer wreath out, but I am itching to take it down and replace it with something autumnal.  What I will hang up in its place is still a mystery to me, but I think a quick trip to Target, may fix that.
I can think of nothing worse than some fake leaves glue gunned onto a circular frame, so I am using these pictures as inspiration.  I am looking for berries, twisted brambles and maybe a few dried flowers.

2. Candles
I love having candles in the house – they look so pretty at night – and make the room all cozy with the lights off.  I normally keep cream colored candles around, but for fall and winter, I have some fabulous candles wrapped in birch bark.  They are obviously more decorative than they are funcional – I really try to keep the burning of them to a minimum since I have had a hard time finding more of them.  I originally got them from World Market, but I know Pottery Barn carried some for a while.  Aren’t they pretty?
3. Apples and Pumpkins and Gourds… oh my!
Fall is synonymous with the harvest, drinking apple cider, carving pumpkins for Halloween, and roasting squash for dinner. The market always has really pretty colored gourds and pumpkins at this time of year, and I love rounding them up in a big basket or bowl for decor.  Don’t you just love the wierd shapes and bumps of the gourds?  Kind of reminds me of a witch’s face
I am LOVING this arrangement with the white pumpkin – it’s less “loud” and in your face than some of the other arrangements I’ve seen…  Hopefully Whole Foods has a variety today…
As we get further into fall, there will of course be additions to the fall decor, but these are a few of the easy ones, that I can’t wait to get to after work!!

Happy Weekend

This weekend we are headed out into the wilderness with a big group of friends to go camping in Yosemite.  It’s supposed to be hot, so I’m looking forward to swimming in the river, seeing half dome, and sitting out until late around the campfire.

I went with my family when I was young, but years passed before I went up again.  It really is one of the most beautiful, breathtaking places.  I forget how lucky we are to live in California where the beach is a 10 minute drive, the wine country is an hour away, and Yosemite and Tahoe are both easy weekend trips.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dorothy Draper DIY

I’ve been casually looking to replace our existing TV stand that we have in our bedroom.  The stand is relatively low to the ground, which makes it really hard to see the TV unless I sit upright.  These are real problems people!!

Because of the dilemma of needing a taller TV stand, I’ve been scouring the internet for inspiration.  Segue to… the Dorothy Draper chest.  Ta-da!!

Dorothy Draper dresser

It’s beautiful, with classic lines and awesome ring pulls.  I love the gold detailing you’ll find on most of them, and best of all, Kris approves!  It’s retro but timeless, and while it sounds like the perfect solution, there is a hitch.  They are REALLY expensive.  Trust me when I say, they are hard to come by – even on Craigslist, I am seeing Dorothy Draper pieces in the $500-$900 range (which is definitely more than I want to pay for the TV stand that goes in our bedroom).  A fully restored piece from an antique dealer could run well into the thousands, and so you can imagine my joy when I stumbled upon this Ikea Hack.

Everyone loves a good Ikea hack (I know I do), and while this one has already reverberated across the web, it’s new to me, so I am beyond excited!!  Does that nightstand below not look pretty much identical to the piece above??  Could have fooled me!

To make your own Dorothy Draper chest, you start out with a Rast Dresser from Ikea – this will run a whopping $30.

Not the most beautiful piece of furniture, but I’ve seen this bad boy transform before, so you know what it’s capable of – its the little dresser that could!

Assemble the dresser first and once it’s together, move on to the sanding phase.  The grain of the wood is pretty rough (I’ve seen it in stores), so don’t skip the sanding step.  Once it’s nice and smooth, wipe it clean with a tack cloth, and then move onto the priming phase.  Once the primer is dry, you can go the old fashioned route and paint the piece with a brush (or roller) or you can go Marcus’ route and use spray paint  (using the spray attachment for even coverage).

Marcus got crafty, and made a stencil based on several Draper pieces he’d seen online.  I’m not the free hand type, so I’d definitely go the stencil route.  If you don’t feel like making the stencil and cutting it out with an exacto knife like Marcus, you can go the easy route and get an overlay from O’verlays (I blogged about them here, and you can get their stuff here.)  A word of caution, the O’verlays will look nice, but they don’t offer the classic Draper shape below… you’ll end up with the look, but not exactly.  If you want the beveled outline, do the stencil.

Moving along, with the stencil’s cut, he used gold paint to transcribe the shape to the drawers, and with round ring pulls from here, the project was complete!  I made it sound way easier than it probably was, but that’s pretty much all there is to it.

Fabulous, no??  I’ll have to do two, and push them together for this to accommodate our enormous TV (it’s a pet peeve of mine when the TV hangs over the edges of it’s stand, I I’d like our new Dorothy Draper inspired chest(s) to be at least two inches longer than the TV on each side).

Anyway, the classic color combo is the black with gold – if you Google Dorothy Draper, you’ll find it’s pretty much all black and gold out there, but we have so much black furniture in our bedroom already… should I deviate from the classic Draper look and go for something lighter?

I saw this one online, and its nice.  I’m not loving it as much as the black ones I’ve seen, but it could work – plus with all the gold detail (at least twelve “drawers” with twelve ring pulls) maybe the black would be overkill??

So much to think about!!
