Inspiration to Reality: Classic, White Living Space

I haven’t done a design board in a while and it’s time to get those creative juices flowing again!

This living room (from Houzz) is pretty much the stuff my dreams are made of…

Open concept.  Neutral Furniture. Classic details. Contemporary lighting and accessories. Worn natural woods.  It’s love.

I put together an inspiration board to get the look (for likely A LOT less than this room cost)… take a peek:

That sofa is actually one of the ones we’d been considering from Pottery Barn – the Carlisle Couch with it’s deep feather stuffed  seat cushions and pretty turned legs.  It’s not cheap, but it’s the core of the room!

To balance out the cost of the sofa, everything else is a bargain find – that rug from RugsUSA is just $1000 right now (with the 60% off discount) for an 8×10′ – great price.

I love the look of the grain sack throw pillows, and the carved wood candlesticks.  The Hicks Pendants are a bit pricey, but they are a classic, and they bring a cool industrial feel to an otherwise classic, clean space.

Juxtaposed against the more natural elements, the mercury glass lamp glams things up, and the dark wood side tables and coffee table really pop against the white walls and white furniture.

Mini Mounted Antlers

Sooo… it looks like the antler craze isn’t going anywhere, and call me crazy, but I’m still really digging rooms that include mounted antlers… after our five days of “Indian Summer” last week, it’s feeling a lot like fall.  The nights are getting colder, the leaves are starting to change, and the jammed up cars on our street every morning tell me that all the kiddos are back in school!  I love that mounted antlers are sort of the toned down, gentrified version of the mounted moose head, and brings just a hint of hunting lodge rustic to an otherwise citified space.  Kind of the perfect season decor to welcome autumn, and lead into winter!

One of my favorite examples…

Cool right? It’s “backwoods rednecks” meets “civilized city folk”.  Ha!
The thing I like most about the mounted antlers is that there are no beady animal eyes staring you down… and no fur… just a clean leather mount.
And just look at how lovely these are on a simple white mount against the dark putty colored paint…
Does anyone else totally adore Erin Gates of Elements of Style??  Remember this post about her trip to Brimfield antique show??  And this awesome display of antlers??
It’s clear I like the look of mounted antlers, but did anyone else know that these bad boys are expensive??? They can easily run up to several hundred dollars each!  That’s not going to fly…

I did a little search on Etsy, and came up with a few affordable options (affordable meaning, anything under $100)…

This one is $59 dollars… not bad, but I really dont like the fact that the screws are literally going through this poor deer’s scull…

This one is a definite improvement, however the plaid would pretty much completely clash with the look and feel of everything else in our house… and for $100, it better be perfect.

These ones areMUCH more my speed… it’s ~$110 for all three, but they are faux, so no poor little deer had to die, AND they are white… so clean and pretty.

And this one is perhaps my favorite… a faux deer mount made of resin… well hello there little guy.  I’d love this even more in white, and he’d look quite dapper (I think) dressed up for the holidays – perhaps with a jaunty wreath around his neck… kind of like this:

So what’s your verdict? Are antlers still in, or are they out??  Or in your opinion, were they NEVER in??
Happy Friday!

Fall Wreath

We are having a bit of a heat spell right now – the weather has been around 85 in the city, which is rare! We’ve been loving every second of it, but even with the warmth, the light has somehow changed, and we’re starting to feel the first few hints of fall.  The leaves on the tree’s have a twinge of yellow to them, and the days are definitely shorter!

With the first inklings of fall, I decided to revamp our doorway decor – not that I’m going nuts with pumpkins in the house (too soon) but just something a bit autumnal.

I had a pine-cone wreath from last year that was very… brown.  Lots of twigs, acorns, and pine-cones… and it looked so depressing hung up, so I always took it down pretty quickly.
Well, I bought some berries and autumn leaf sprigs at Michael’s (literally $5 for everything with my coupon) and busted out the glue gun.  This is the finished result…

There is still plenty of green in the leaves to keep it feeling fresh, and the color from the berries makes these pine-cones the opposite of dreary.  Lively?  Inspired? Awake (at the least!)…

A gold ribbon (mainly to hold it to the door) finishes it off…

I’m super stoked about how this turned out!  Last Christmas, I’d bought a live boxwood wreath from Trader Joe’s, and it dried beautifully, so that’s been hanging on our door for the last year.  The new fall wreath brings some new life to this space, and if you ask me looks awesome with the brass door knob, key hole, and numbers.

Not that I’m biased or anything, but I think it also looks fetching alongside the new gold leafed frames…

Ok, enough talk of leaves changing, and temperatures dropping… Indian Summer is here baby, and I’m heading outside to soak up the heat!

Dorm Room Rewind…

It’s September, and this time of year always gets me nostalgic for back to school.  The excitement over first day of school clothes, the smell of new pencils, new notebooks, new teachers…
College…  Oh man… if I had to do it over (which I would in a heartbeat) I’d go for a totally different dorm room look.  I remember agonizing over the perfect color of periwinkle for the down comforter we were ordering, and also being really proud of the oversized cork-board covered in pictures, and a hot pink lucite lamp with matching pink shade covered in sequins.  #whatwasithinking??!!
To go back and design my dorm room, I’d go for graphic prints with a girly, youthful twist… something only an 18 year old fun loving, beach cruiser riding, UCSB co-ed could get away with…
First up… the black and white and green inspiration:

I WISH they made these storage benches when I was in college.  Not only would it have been stylish to stash our snacks, or books, or whatever it was we kept in our room, but it could have been pushed under the beds, and pulled out for seating when neighbors came by to “chill”.  I love the stripes – a little Beetlejuice, but I LOVE that about it.  And the fun lime green is so youthful, and would inject some much needed life into the drab dorm room decor.

Nothing about berber carpet says, “what a comfortable, cozy living environment” – this fun rug solves that problem quickly (and cheaply!)

Next up… the girly, graphic, mint and pink combo…

Nothing says “a girl lives here” like mint and pink.  I mean, Kris would DIE if I did our bedroom up in mint bedding with some pink and zebra throw pillows.  I’d have a pretty unhappy camper on my hands.  College should be carefree, and it’s the time to decorate your room the way you want… so pink and mint it is! Again, I just have to say… this storage bench is GENIUS. Oh if only we could rewind 10+ years and tell Target to make these back then…

And finally, the ultimate in girly… floral bedding!  Yes please!

I think this room is my favorite.  The floral bedding is bright and happy and fun, and the mix of patterns, and graphic is very kate spade meets a country garden.  You’ll notice, I kept the accessories the same in each room – drum table (just $60 right now), and the little brass elephant from Fab is quirky and shiny, and would instantaneously make you the cool girl with great taste.
I’m actually dying to get one of these chrome floor lamps from Ikea – a GREAT price, and aside from providing great task lighting for those late nights cramming for finals, it’s ultra cool looking.  Looks REALLY pricey in person… but it’s Ikea!  $70!
Done!

A Little Red Rug

Red is a color I stay away from in our own home…

Perhaps it’s from seeing a few too many homes in the 1990’s look like this:

Upstairs color for the blue and green walls.

Woof.

There’s a lot of red, and a lot of brown… and all together it equals… just a lot.  Too much.  I call this look “faux elegance”.

That said, I have a real appreciation for this loud color when used in the RIGHT way.  For me, that would be in accessories.  More specifically, I could really see myself incorporating this color through a Persian rug… but not an uber traditional rug – one with more of a tribal print.  I swear I’m not trying to be vague!!  If you’re not entirely sure what I’m talking about, check out Jenny’s (of the Little Green Notebook):

She had this great little rug: from in her New York kitchen.  See what I mean?  With a less traditional pattern, that is more graphic and “chunky” it really makes this space come alive!

Here are some other good examples of using red Persian rugs without going overboard…

This hallway had me at hello… white adobe walls, substantial wooden beams.  It’s classic Spanish style meets the middle east, and the punch of red on this flat woven rug is absolute perfection…

Again… here we have a nice neutral kitchen, and the red runner just wakes things up a bit (plus, whatever gets spilled on this rug will disappear instantaneously with all the dark colors and pattern)

I love this pair of rugs in the library.  With a full wall of books, it’s hard to go wrong here, but they just add a global element, and having a more simple, large diamond pattern in the area rug isn’t too busy against all the book spines.

This rug isn’t Persian – it’s more southwestern, but I love it.  Again, who would think to put a large rug like this in a kitchen??  Not that many people, but with so many spills, it’s genius!  Just don’t put an heirloom in there…

So what is my conclusion about red?

When done in small doses, it’s amazing!

I’d go for red rugs with a global feel (Persian or Southwestern seem the safest).  More graphic patterns are also easier and at all costs, stay away from any red rug that looks “faux Tuscan villa”, or “old European” in any way shape or form.

Home Decor Discovery

I’ve always been a huge fan of Polyvore.  Always.  Amazing solution to aggregate fashion online, and hands down my favorite source for discovery.  If I had a specific item in mind (gold strappy high-heels for example) I’d type it in, filter by price, and voila, there were options at my fingertips!

Well, amazing AMAZING news!!  I just discovered that in addition to fashion, they also have a home decor filter.  Yes… I know…. HUGE!

Let’s say I’m looking for a rustic side table (or coffee table)… chose “tables” from the main category, filter with the keyword “rustic” and there you have it!  Could it be simpler???

After discovering this, I felt inspired, and pulled together some collections of things I’ve been browsing myself…
First up: the rustic occasional table… to replace our dark faux wood coffee and side tables that are currently in our living room.  I’m really drawn to the lighter natural wood finishes, metal details, x-bar reinforcements, and tiered storage…

Rustic Occasional Tables

I also went a step further to browse art, since I’ve been toying with the idea of revamping the gallery wall in our living room… for fall, I am really liking the more muted color palates, nature inspired pieces, and quirky photographs with an aged “instagram like” quality.  The elephant is absolutely AMAZING, and I think Kris would like the old surf photo.

Art

And, while we are not necessarily IN NEED of gorgeous chandeliers, or lamps right now, I’ve been toying with the idea of swapping out the brushed metal lamps in the living room, for something a little more mid-century… just for a while!  These lamps have served me well – six years, and four apartments!!

Lamps

This is in no way sponsored by the way – I just happen to love Polyvore, and think that this is so cool!  Fashion, AND home decor??? Such a cool tool when you’re looking for something specific!

Black and White

I have a little love affair going with graphic black and white patterns right now…

It’s apparent from the black and white pattern mix going on in our dining room right now with the wicker chair makeover, and I’m finding myself picking up fun black and white accessories here and there.  Our living room has been saturated with color for months now, and while I’m not one of those people who can live in a home devoid of color for too long, there is something so appealing about this simple color palatte.

This clean white room is a favorite of mine – it’s simple, but not boring, with the graphic punch coming from the pillows and striped rug.

If this were our bathroom, I could die a happy girl.  The wallpaper is fabulous in all it’s psychedelic glory, but the clean white shower curtain gives the eye something to rest on amid the busy patterned walls.

While I’m sure this rug isn’t from Ikea (my guess is that it’s the Madeline Weinrib version… quite pricey), but it’s so fun.  Nate Berkus uses a similar version in many of his designs as well…

Striped curtains – everything else in here is pretty simple, but these curtains make this room something to stop and look at!

And again, more fab black and white wallpaper.  We’re still renting, but one day a sweet little powder bath is going to get one heck of a makeover in our house with something fabulous like this…..

Not willing to commit to a pricey rug, or anything so permanant as wallpaper?  Ikea has recently produced some AMAZING pieces (and this is not a sponsored post – I am really just that impressed with them right now) so I pulled together 6 of my favorite pieces they’re selling right now…

1. Staggered Stripe Rug
2. Woven Aztec Lumbar Pillow
3. Diamond pattern Area Rug
4. Striped Dinner Plate
5. Striped Knit Throw Blanket
6. Houndstooth Throw Pillow

I actually bought several of the lumbar pillows (they are thick, and look really expensive in person) and the striped throw has been a staple in our living room for the last year.  I also couldn’t help myself, and bought four of the large striped dinner plates last week too!  They really are amazing, and would look so great with all white dishes, and a simple table setting.

What do you think? Are you loving black and white as much as I am??

Have you found other fabulous black and white finds recently??

Steel Cased Windows

I am so beyond obsessed with steel windows and doors.  With this awful weather in SF, and what has been one extended bad hair day for the past month, I’ve been daydreaming of leaving the city for warmer weather, and more space.  I downloaded the Zillow app recently to browse house listings in the bay area (you know… just to see…), and it has become a huge time suck as I indulge in reality TV each night…

Let’s be completely honest with each other ok?  Ok… the bay area is expensive… really expensive… so most of the houses in our price range feature lovely Formica counter-tops, fluorescent overhead lighting (always super flattering), shag carpet, lots of yellowed linoleum, and horrid faux finishes galore.

Let me paint the picture… this is what $950K gets you:

WOOF!

Luckily for me, I see past all the hideousness, and imagine all the things I’d do to transform these homes from the Nightmare on Elm Street… and yes, it does take A LOT of imagination…

One of my favorite architectural details that I would absolutely LOVE to incorporate into our future home is steel framed windows and doors.  They are super clean and simple, a little industrial, and yet still seamlessly fit in almost any style space, from contemporary, to Spanish, to classic.

Um… OMG those wood beams paired with the steel cased windows are TO DIE FOR. Double-threat! I also love the overhead industrial sconces, and the simple black and white color palate.  I really think the thin steel frames on these windows and doors let the outside in, and don’t detract from anything!
If this isn’t an entryway… I don’t know what it.  Sooo simple, but so pretty.
And a wall of these windows just let’s so much light into this dark tone kitchen.
Everything.  Love.  The black lacquered tile floors, the french bistro chairs, corner bench seating, black and white galore, that pretty blue and white chinoiserie vase (with tea roses)… and of course those windows.
And of course, they are right at home in this industrial work space…
And as natural as they looked in an industrial space, the steel cased windows are as at home in this earthy living room…
And this arched steel cased window is amazing.  So pretty in an all white, simple room.
I mean… this is the stuff dreams are made of right???

Updated Living Room Photos

I always share updates about our house little by little – like last week I posted photos of our side tables with the orchid terrarium, or a few weeks ago there were some photos of our living room when I posted the x-bench makeover – but I rarely ever post lots of photos at once… call me lazy, but I realized this when hunting down pictures of our un-styled wine hutch, and couldn’t find a single one!
I feel like this is a good time to document and share pictures of where our living room is now… before it changes again with a new, beautiful sofa…
Let’s start out with the desk area… not much has changed here since any prior updates.  The sea fan shadow boxes are still alive and well, and I still love them as much now as when I first hung them!!

The tripod lamp is also still one of my favorite things… I got a new lampshade that has a rougher woven texture that I’m planning on swapping in, but nothing earth shattering.

Standing at the desk and turning around to face the rest of the living room, there is lots of color going on for summer and I love it.  As the weather cools down (or should I say, as it warms up with fall since there has not been one day over 60 degrees in the last several weeks)… whatever… as the seasons change, and we move into fall, I want to swap the art out for something a little more moody, and the pillows will be a bit more subdued as well.

For now, the bright blues and yellows remind me that it’s summer (somewhere outside SF), and of course these just make me happy… even in the fog.

My little terrarium is still plugging away… nothing has died yet!

And now, looking to the left, I just posted about our new little vignette on the wine rack… well I felt that I owed it a few nicer photos, since I relocated the memory card for our DSLR camera.

The mirror will eventually be swapped out for something round or more ornate (like I’d posted about here) but since propping up the gold picture frame on the right, I kind of hate the mirror less… either way it will have to do for now.

Besides, the orchids are so arrestingly beautiful, I hardly notice the generic mirror lurking in the background….

Yep, these plants are loving life – bright, indirect light… all. day. long.

I’d mentioned that I’d gathered the plants together on a small tray… here is said tray.  A little feather shape that I picked up from target on sale a few months back.

Ok, last picture of the wine hutch for now… I swear…

Now we are standing in the archway between the unfinished dining room and living room.  Looking back at the wall of windows, and our sofas.

When we first moved in, I absolutely despised Kris’ modern, black couch… but in the last year or so, I’ve either a) gotten used to it, b) piled enough pillows and throw blankets on it to distract the eye, c) balanced out it’s darkness with other dark colors in the living room, or d) all of the above… I kind of don’t hate it anymore.

Don’t get me wrong, that thing is going on Craigslist as soon as humanly possible, but I don’t think it’s the eyesore I used to…

Here I am, scootching back into the dining room to get a little bit more of the room in to the frame…

… and scootching back a little bit more to get the cowhide rug that I simply adore… I think having different textures in adjacent spaces has also really helped balance the room and make it feel less “big box store” than it really is.

Let’s be honest, everything we have in our living room is either from Ikea (frames, curtain rods, sofas), Target (wine hutch, fabric for throw pillows, baskets under the coffee table, lamps, trays), Bed Bath & Beyond (curtain panels), Craigslist (coffee table with matching side tables, console table), Homegoods (basically every accessory from the glass vases to the candle holders to the faux fruit).

Right?!  The natural fiber gives a healthy dose of “organic” to an otherwise, completely in-organic feeling space… just what it needed if you asked me!

And this coffee table… so bad, but I just had to show you all how badly we need a coffee table with storage when we do replace this thing (which I pray to god is very soon!)

I mean, these three baskets in the forefront are stuffed to the gills with wires, cords, TV remotes, video game controllers (because my boyfriend is secretly a 13 year old boy at heart).  On the other side of the table – closest to the couch – the baskets are filled with blankets for cozying up on the couch, and the surplus of wine that won’t fit in that mini wine hutch!

My point??  Storage is important.

Ok, moving onto the other side of the room… let’s first get distracted by the gorgeous flowers I picked up at the grocery store.  They smell as good as they look, and since I’m not one to hide a good deal, they were only $3 for the bunch!!

I kind of hope they die soon so I can get more while the deal is still going… but they are onto their second full week and going strong!

So here we are, sitting on Kris’ couch and looking across to the other side of the room… ignore the painting propped on the ground by the front door.  That came out of the dining room, and needs to find a new home somewhere else…

The white console table moved our of our hallway a few months back, and I has been hanging out on the far wall ever since.  I’ve had a really hard time trying to think of what should go here.  I’m thinking we may ultimately end up selling this console table (despite it’s fabulous new paint job), and maybe the fiddle leaf fig (FLF) can go there with another slightly smaller potted plant next to it?

Or maybe a white or light grey garden stool with a small plant on top of it, to go next to the FLF?

To be honest, the only reason the FLF is out here in the middle of the living room is because I nearly killed it in the dining room next to the heater.  It’s lost 5 leaves so far after moving it away from the heater, and it’s been a few days since the last leaf dropped… I’ve Googled the topic to death, and while I’m not 100% sure, I think we’re in the clear, and I’m going to work on nursing it back to health.  The bald spot on the plant is facing the wall, but you can see where it’s a little bare near the bottom left…

Anyways, I’m sure you’re all completely bored to tears after that story about my houseplant… long story short, unless I want to sign this plant’s death certificate right now, I need to find a home for it in here, and so it might just be at the sacrifice of the console table…

And that’s it!

More updates to come soon with the new sofa, a new coffee table (possibly?) and new or revamped side tables!!

Can you believe this room started out looking like this??

ME EITHER!!!

Being a Grown-up and Buying a Grown-up Sofa

Nothing makes me feel like more of a grown up than making big purchases like buying a sofa.  NOTHING!  Holy heck – I’m turning 30 this year and buying a sofa and living with a boy!

Big things are happening left and right, and this sofa decision is weighing heavily on my mind.  We have spent several weekends sitting on hundreds of sofas – some comfy but ugly, some pretty but uncomfortable, some big, some small… we are the Goldilocks of couch-hunting.  It’s too soft, it’s not soft enough – you should hear us bicker!
I went into this whole process wanting a standard sofa… and have come away agreeing to a sectional.  Things are a-changin my friends!  I am putting comfort before aesthetics (to a point of course)!  In just a few weekends, I’ve gone from loathing the idea of a sectional, to welcoming it with open arms!  They are soooo comfortable, and shockingly enough, they make some pretty good looking ones now!
One of our finalists is actually from Pottery Barn – which I’d sworn off the last time we were couch hunting, but we are back…
The Carlisle is pretty, AND comfy… it turns out, and once we sit on it again, we might even seal the deal!
Of course, I can’t fully commit until I have a very clear image in my head of how this will look with the rest of our stuff, so of course I mocked it up… (are you surprised?)
Ok, let’s be honest, that’s just for fun!  I love this sofa regardless of my little mock-up 🙂
What is painful to admit is that by the time this lovely sofa is ordered and in our house, my little fiddle leaf fig will probably be a twig.  I am pretty sure I’ve killed it!
It’s already lost 4 of its big gorgeous leaves!  Damn steam heater… it was living next to it in our dining room, and started looking a bit yellow and sad… turns out extreme heat or cold, or changes in temperature can cause it to go into dormancy, and drop it’s leaves.  I caught it after just 2 leaves, but I think once it’s on this “dormancy road” it’s too late.
Sad!
