Wedding Style Guide: Black Tie Wedding

Ahh the black tie wedding (not to be mistaken with the evening wedding) – a black tie affair is possibly one of the most difficult of all weddings to dress for as a guest.  While a knee length LBD would do the trick in a pinch, a black tie wedding is the only occasion where a floor length gown is acceptable.  Always during the evening, it’s totally appropriate for opt for a glamorous floor skimming number – break out your grandmother’s cocktail rings, and sparkly chandelier earrings, because black tie means glam all the way!

Old Hollywood Glamour:

Black Tie Wedding I

Yes, this is Oscar de la Renta, so for the masses this first dress is really just a day-dream, but with this look in mind, head to Bloomindales and seek out a sparkly gold number like this one.  The trick to making gold look expensive is to watch the sparkle and the tone.  A too gold color looks gaudy, and too sparkly conjures images of a Vegas showgirl – look for a muted Champagne gold, and you’ll be good to go.  Since the dress is the statement, stay away from more sparkle in the jewelry – pearls are a classic choice.  Finish the look with red lips and red nails – neutral eye makeup and simple hair will be perfect.

New Hollywood Glamour:

Black Tie Wedding II

Emerald green has been a HUGE trend in the past several years, with many a-list actresses donning substantial gemstone jewelry for red carpet events.  Jump on the bandwagon because this rich green is flattering on everyone and brings to life a simple black silhouette.  Don’t be fooled by this dress’ demure neckline – the back opens up to show a little skin (tastefully of course).

Midsummer Nights Dream:

Black Tie Wedding III

Yep, this next look reminds me of the Shakespeare play, because of the romance.  The floaty chiffon is romantic (and flattering), and you’ll stand out from all the other navy and black dresses in this pale pink number.  There is nothing like gold and pale pink to compliment one another, so be sure that your accessories – from strappy heels to dangly earrings are gold toned and sparkly.

Heaven is… White on White on White

While I am totally obsessed with color and patterns, there is something SO appealing about interior design that revolves around white.  What I’ve noticed??  The key to pulling this off is to start out with impeccable architecture.  A blah room with uneven drywall, low ceilings, dim lighting, and little architectural charm is not the ideal spot to experiment with white on white.  The absence of color draws attention to imperfections, so if you are working with a room that doesn’t inspire awe when empty, steer clear of this look!

bright entryway with dark contrast details
Oh, this entry way is the stuff dreams are made of… the dark wood details with the railings, table, and pendant light fixture make the white pop even more.  I also love that the accessories are kept to a bare minimum so the focus is on the room.  A small upholstered bench, a faded runner, and a loose bunch of wildflowers is all you need.  So lovely!
White room
Such a cool sitting area.  Formal?  Yes.  Stuffy? No.  The fuzzy rug and simple accessories make this room inviting, while the slip-covered chairs, and cherub statue (yep… it’s a cherub up there) dress things up.  I also love the contrast between the cherub (old school) and the chunky dark wood mirrors (modern all the way).
Obsessed with White
Dreamy, feminine, farmhouse.  All words that come to mind when I see this room – the natural wood floors, and the chippy cabinet for storage scream shabby chic, while the claw footed bathtub and ornate chandelier lend lady-like elegance. Soo pretty!
White room, white frames
White goes mod!  This hallway is a bit too sterile for my taste, but I still LOVE this hallway.  The frames on the wall don’t actually frame any art, but their monochrome color scheme, ornate details, and grouping make the wall the art.  I wonder though… who sits in that chair?!
white room
Ok, this is certainly not child friendly… maybe not even man friendly (I’m envisioning spaghetti sauce stains, and greasy pizza fingers), but the all white couches and white rug look so clean and pretty!  I am 99% sure that that stick horse is just there for show.
White Living Room
Hello Hamptons!  The shell artwork, model sailboat, and swordfish pillow bring in a few beachy touches to this all white abode.  I imagine looking out at the sea, and opening the windows to let fresh ocean breezes blow through the house.
White living room.
I love the high peaked ceiling in this room, and the beams keep it architecturally interesting.  The slatted walls remind me of an old farmhouse, and simple accessories and natural fiber and wood touches make this room instantly inviting.

DIY Headboard Inspiration

I’ve recently been struggling with the idea of buying a new headboard for our bedroom.  Being completely honest, the headboards I like are WAY outside of my price range, and I just cannot justify spending upwards of $500 for a quality tufted headboard.

Last night, I stumbled across an amazing Pinterest find: 34 DIY Headboard Ideas.  Um, hello, where have you been for the last several months?!
While I am still toying with the idea of making my own tufted headboard, some of these ideas are so cool, it’s really given me some different ideas that are outside of my comfort zone.
First up – Laser cut metal roofing!  Who’d have thunk?  Somehow it has a glamorous feel, despite using the most un-sexy of materials.  Pretty sure Kris would say no, but it’s so creative, I kind of love it!
Talk about getting a bang for your buck – this headboard is just a decal on a bold colored wall – you could easily stencil it on with paint as an alternative, but it’s dramatic, and EXTREMELY cost effective.  Perhaps not my taste, but this would be so fun in a teenager’s room.  16 year old me would have gone wild for this!
A similar idea to the last headboard, this one here uses chalkboard paint so you can have fun with it.  Again, not quite what I had in mind, but such a cool idea!
Take some reclaimed wooden boards, cut to size, nail gun to wall.  Easy, cheap, and very shabby chic.  Where I will find reclaimed wood lying around in SF, I do not know… I also don’t think I’d want that anywhere near my bed if I found it on the street here, but that’s a whole separate issue.
A huge piece of art has taken over this next bed – very chic & very minimalist while being very dramatic.  I love how this looks, but it’s a bit stark for my taste.
Why have I never thought of this before?!  Use a folding screen as a large dramatic headboard.  I recently saw one at Cost Plus for less than $200 – it was natural colored linen with nail head trim… may need to go back and swoop that up!!
Ok, I want to live here!  Look at those amazing old doors propped up behind the bed – amazing.  And that chandelier?!  WOW
Anyway, check out the rest of the article for more unique DIY headboards!

Happy (belated) Cinco de Mayo

Oh Monday!  Here again so soon?!

After a really awesome weekend visiting my sister, I’ve got a bit of the Monday blues.  Especially when it’s so warm outside and I’m stuck inside!   How easily I could go back to riding bikes around town, wine tasting, and sipping a few margaritas in honor of Cinco de Mayo – a Mexican “holiday” that only American’s celebrate.  Gotta love that!

Sacramento is one of my favorite cities, because it’s so un-city like.  Everyone is so nice, no one is in a rush to get anywhere – it’s all about local establishments, and unique spots.  Of course, once you get outside of the city proper, it’s all about Walmart, outlet shopping, and I kid you not, there is an Applebees on every corner.

Getting out of the city is such a treat, My sister and her husband have a tandem bike, along with my mom’s 3-speed.  I hopped on the back of the tandem with my brother-in-law, and while it was scary at first, it’s so fun!  Since the person in the back has no control over breaking, turning, etc, you just have to petal, and take in the sights.  I wish San Francisco had fewer hills – I’d love to toodle around town on a bike!

Anyway, a little Cinco de Mayo Margarita inspiration – thinking of making one of these bad boys in about 15 minutes or so.  It’s that or head to the gym, which I just don’t see happening 🙂

The Ultimate Spicy Margarita:
Begin by adding ice into a pint glass; pour in an ounce and a half of good tequila.  Add an ounce of Grand Marnier, along with an ounce of fresh squeezed lime juice.  Drop in a thin slice or two of jalapeno, and a dash of chili powder.  Finish with a tablespoon of simple syrup (can substitute agave nectar if you have it), stir it up, and enjoy!  This cocktail can also be strained if you are feeling fancy!!

Happy Weekend!!

Happy weekend lovelies!  I am headed up to Sacramento to visit my sister and hopefully escape some of the fog that has descended upon San Francisco – dear mother nature, what the hell… it’s May!!

Anyway, it’s quite lonesome in the house – Kris left for his surf trip to Costa Rica with a few buddies, and it’s the first time I’m really alone in our apartment.  On one hand, I love that I get to hog the entire bed at night, but I’m already counting the days until he gets home.

Happy (early) weekend, and have a wonderful (and safe) cinco de mayo!!

Indoor Plants – My Newfound Secret!

I have a notoriously brown thumb – if a plant is green, it will soon be brown after several days with me!  Several months ago, I bought several lovely topiaries, and at $30 a pop, I tried my best to keep them alive.  They lasted 67 days exactly. Not bad for me, but they are very brown and very sad now…

While those sad dead topiaries are going in the trash tonight, I have found an ingenious replacement for them!  Restoration Hardware has come to the rescue with preserved boxwood globes and topiaries!!  How cool is that?!

These bushes were really alive once upon a time, but some genius (who also probably had a brown thumb) had the awesome idea to preserve these, so all they need is a good dusting once in a while!

Love it!!

Must get my hands on some this weekend, so that I can stop wasting money on plants that I will inevitably kill (I swear I have the best intentions!)

Ballard Designs also sells Angel Vine Topiraries that are slightly more whimsical, and branchy – drawback to these?  They are 100% fake.  Meh.

How Pinteresting!

As a fan of pretty things, I often turn to Pinterest for inspiration – whether it’s for fashion, home decor, recipes, or just pretty pictures – SO I’ve decided to start a series – How Pinteresting – to curate the things I’ve been finding most inspirational on Pinterest.

This week I’m all over the board with summer fashion inspiration, bold colors, and rustic home decor.
summer style
I’m loving this dress – not even the slightest clue where it’s from, but I love the drape, I love that it’s cut like a button down shirt (longer in the front, shorter on the sides), and I love that the fabric has a good weight.  It’s work appropriate, but can be dressed up for night with bold accessories.
Navy on the wall!! So rich!
One might think it’s the bright turquoise chest that I’m loving here, and while it is pretty fabulous on it’s own, what I’m really drawn to is the wall color.  A dark color is a brave choice, but with lots of white (bedding, art, matte, and lamp) it doesn’t give off a cave-like feeling.  Our bedroom doesn’t get much light, and if we weren’t renting, I would be painting this lovely navy on the walls this weekend!  I’m a little too lazy to try and cover that dark color back up when we move, so it’s a no-go for now, but I’m loving the look here!
B stole my look!
Holy load of accessories!  Multiple neckleaces, bangles, bracelets, and watches… Throw in a chained belt, and patterned cuffs on the jacket and that’s a whole lot going on.  I happen to love this – might not be able to pull it off, but am certainly going to try 🙂
Day Glo pleated skirt
Day-glo goes ladylike!  I am loving the tight pleats on this skirt, and the bright neon orange.  Or is it pink?  Is “neon coral” a color?  Whatever it is, I am loving it.  Definitely a weekend or evening look, to be worn with pared down accessories, and a neutral top / shoes.
colorful balloon love
Oh this photograph… It’s French, and there’s a big bunch of colorful balloons… what’s not to love?!
love this rustic table
From the nailhead trim on these chairs, to the raw wood table, I love everything about this dining room set-up!  We have a similarly styled pedestal table at home – an amazing find on Craigslist.  It’s currently painted black, and since it’s from the early 1900’s, the paint is REALLY chipping.  I call it shabby chic, but it’s definitely closer to “shabby” right now than “chic”.  This photo makes me want to sand it down to it’s original wood… so pretty!

Summer 2012 Wedding Gowns

I always look forward to the release of the next season’s wedding dresses.  I find the world of bridal couture completely fascinating, but I have to say, I am not loving a lot of the Summer collections.  Some of the trends are WAY too trendy – I fear there will be many brides looking back and saying, what was I thinking?!

The designers I’m drawn to this season are the ones embracing feminine silhouettes, interesting draping, and floaty fabrics.

Watters:
First up… Watters – they were actually one of my favorite designers that my sister tried on when she was shopping for her wedding dress.  The bonus??  These dresses look extremely high-end, but in the realm of wedding dresses, are actually quite affordable (dresses range from $2K – $4K).

Watters Beverly Hills: I love the variation of fabrics, and the draping – it’s unique without being over the top, taking a classic silhouette and making it stand out.  I’d prefer a deeper sweetheart at the bust, but this is so beautiful it’s hard to critique!

watters santa barbara wedding dress
Watters Santa Barbara:  This silk taffeta dress fits narrowly through this hips, which is flattering on the waist – a ball gown can be difficult to wear depending on the skirt.  Too many gathers near the waist makes you look bulky, but the flat lay and the flared skirt keep this slimming and streamlined. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t LOVE pockets?!  The belt has got to go… something more delicate and less bulky!

watters 2012 napa wedding dress
Watters Napa:  Oh the romance – silk organza is so floaty and light, and the way that the skirt has subtle pick-ups creates volume without poof.  I’m not loving the bolero, or the mauve sash, but both are easily removable.  I imagine this dress with a floral belt – possibly in champagne for contrast.  Can we also talk about this bodice?  The intricately embroidered detail and defined sweetheart are both so pretty.  LOVE.

Vera Wang:
In addition to Watters dreamy confections, Vera Wang tops my list for Summer Couture designs.  Cliche? Yes.  Pricy?  OMG, I don’t even want to know.  BUT, her attention to detail, and unique embellishments remain unparalleled by any other bridal designer.

Vera Wang Diana: Holy ruffled skirt… does this look like a huge blossoming flower, or what?!  The raw cut edge keeps the skirt contemporary, while the silhouette is traditional all the way.  Another love??  The bodice is pleated, NOT ruched, minimizing bulk, and accentuating the waist.  Finally, that twisted belt.  So simple, but so pretty.

Vera Wang Gemma:  I am so in love with this dress, I’ve actually posted about it before (original obsession here).  The asymmetrical pleated bodice is SO pretty – looks amazing on this thin model… not so sure it’s for me… but the cut organza hem is so pretty – it looks like a cloud or flowers, or some ethereal combination of both.  Dreamy!

Wedding Style Guide: Evening Wedding

To continue this series of posts, I wanted to talk about evening weddings.  Black-tie optional is something you see on a TON of invitations.  This translates to cocktail-length evening wear.  Do not take “black-tie optional” to mean “floor length gown”.  Aside from the bride (and maybe the bridesmaids) you’ll end up being the only other person there in a floor length ensemble.  It’s a “don’t” for sure.

My guidelines for a black-tie optional evening wedding are simple, and here are a few inspirations to get you going!

Pretty in Pink:

Evening Wedding I

This look could possibly double as a late afternoon to evening wedding.  Even though its short, the color keeps the whole look sweet, so you’ll avoid looking like a tart.  A few rules – keep the footwear classic.  A t-strap shoe is perfect here – strappy or sparkly heels will put this over the top for sure.  Keep all the accessories in the same color family – golds, rose golds, cremes, and tonal pink is pretty together.  This look is for sipping bubbly under the stars, and dancing to a live band’s Frank Sinatra re-productions.

Red Hot Ruffles:

Evening Wedding III

This is DEFINITELY a dress to be worn strictly after dark.  A one shouldered, ruffly red number is in no way appropriate for a non-evening wedding.  Art deco jewlery, an embossed crocodile (or faux croc) clutch, and classic pumps accessorize the look.  Just be sure to bring a pashmina for your shoulders as you leave!  This look is perfect for a hotel wedding – picture a grand ballroom, chandeliers galore, and champagne towers.

**A note of caution: make sure the skirt falls just above your knees – any shorter and this is not a wedding look anymore!

Floaty Full Skirt:

Evening Wedding II

Oh the romance of a wedding… and what is more romantic than a full skirt and lace??  A soft dove color allows you to be more bold with bright accessories.  Nude pumps will elongate the legs, and a sweet embellished sweater will keep the chill off at night.  This look is perfect for sipping martinis at the country club’s bar, and twirling on the dance floor with your date.

Final words of advice??  Follow the cardinal rules and you will be fine!

  1. NO White.  If the pale pink is even close to white, wear something else!
  2. Nothing TOO short.  If you wouldn’t want your grandmother to see you in it, chances are your friend getting married doesn’t want her grandmother to see you in it either.
  3. Do not try to outshine the bride.

Living Room Updates

Time for a few updates on our living room!

As I mentioned here, I pulled the trigger on a grey trellis rug that I’d been eyeing for months.  I originally thought it was back-ordered until May, but when it arrived early, I was thrilled!  It REALLY brings some life to the room… I think I’m in love.

I literally scoured my hard-drive for some good “before” pictures, and was shocked that it was so hard to find any!  In advance, excuse the poor quality, weird light, etc.  P.S. don’t mind that the edge of the rug is rolled up in this picture – I had JUST layed it out, and since then it’s flattened out 🙂

Before:

I still love the sea-foam colored Persian rug that was in there before, but with strong sunlight from the floor to ceiling windows, and the very neutral colors, the room was feeling very washed out.  The old rug is going to be making a new home in our bedroom, while the grey trellis is here to stay.

After:

A few other small changes – the tall $15 lamp from Target moved across the room (you can see it in the first “before” next to my beloved wicker chair) – we both hate this lamp but it’s here for the meantime.  There are other things on my loooonnnggggg list of “wants”, so it will have to wait.

The small glass top table moved in between the desk and the wicker chair, and the lamp is actually a total re-purpose.  Remember those tall candlestick lamps from the bedroom post here??  Well a new lampshade later, this little guy is looking much better!  This table was a steal from Craigslist that I bought when I first moved to San Francisco.  It’s not really our taste, but replacing it is not a top priority.

I also won a small battle, and finally got rid of Kris’ HIDEOUS filing cabinet.  The paperwork has been temporarily moved into the black and white chevron print file box under the table next to the TV.
Next up on my grand list?? Replacing all the mismatched pillows with new covers.  They are so shabby, so I am going to have to make some tough decisions.  I want them to have both color and pattern, but nothing too wild.
Also, after looking through these pictures, I notice that we’ve got cords EVERYWHERE.  Must fix that with some strategic taping, and anchors along the walls!!
I love coming home now to my freshened living room, but it is by no means “finished.”  I find myself picking it apart when looking at these photos, and there are still SO MANY things I want to change.  I want to replace both couches, get two lovely Chippendale’s to define the sitting area (remember this post??) Replace the wicker chair with a big comfy overstuffed chair, swap out the wrought iron side table next to the desk, update the art on the wall over the black sofa (maybe a gallery wall here?), and the mirror in the entry needs to find a new home – I’d love to put some shallow shelves up there, but it is what it is.
Anyways, despite my never-ending laundry list of things I want, I always remind myself, I’m only 28, I have years to accumulate pieces I love, and right now I am very happy with the mini updates I’ve made.
