Improvements in the bedroom

      Before:                                          After:
I would like to preface this post by saying, our bedroom is nowhere near to being finished.  I had become so fed up with the glaring white walls, and the hideous $10 blinds that our landlord lovingly installed… so I made a few changes.  Admittedly, we still need a lot of work… A LOT of work.  The real transformation has been in the dresser and nightstands (original post found here).  You can hardly tell the dis-repair of the nightstands in this very poor “before” picture, but they were no bueno.
Still on the agenda is a new mattress.  Ours is just terrible, but the decision between queen or king is holding up the rest of the room’s progress.  Once we decide on a mattress, then I can move onto upholstered headboards, bedding, and wall decor.

Really, not much has actually changed – I got new lamps which I LOVE, and hung a few mirrors, along with a few picture frames (remember those lovely french photo’s from this post) and some curtains.  I look back at the old lamps and think how teeny they look.  The new ones are much more substantial… really liking that.  I hated the idea of just throwing them away, so I am in the purpose of re-furbishing them – that mini DIY project to be posted soon!!

After all the toil to get those quatrefoil mirrors, I am not loving them above the bed.  I think they may be better suited in the hallway or above the TV.  I also think that the row’s of three (three mirrors, three picture frames) is just too matchy matchy, but alas, they will have to stay until other changes are made.

And do you like the new bedding?  I should say… “new” bedding.  Just flipped over the old duvet, stole the chevron pillows from the living room, and laid a cozy throw over the bed (originally because we needed a bit more warmth at night, but it has stayed).

I’ve already got a few ideas cooking, and have been working on a new inspiration board for the bedroom based on my biggest pet peeves and some of the challenges this space has.  Since it’s one of the darker rooms in our place, I’ll need to be strategic… keep your eyes peeled for some ideas here!

Chippendale Obsession

black chippendale chair
S. R. Gambrel
Recently I have been nothing short of OBSESSED with the idea of replacing the white wicker chair that sits in the corner of our living room.  Truth be told, this chair just doesn’t belong in the living room.  It belongs on the porch of our future home, or in the bedroom of our future baby girl, or in a grassy back-yard under an apple tree.  Ok, a bit too specific, but you get the picture.

I’ve had this wicker chair since I was a little girl, and even though we don’t have anywhere in our teeny cozy SF apartment to put it, I just can’t part with it… yet.  I’ve been on the hunt for a big overstuffed chair for this nook in the room – something really cozy that I can curl up in by the window on Saturday mornings with my coffee and gossip magazines.  While I’ve been scouring the internet for chairs, I keep noticing Chippendales EVERYWHERE.  The more I see them in fabulous contemporary spaces, the more I fall in love!  And so my obsession has begun.

I’ve learned there are two basic variations so let me clarify. This style originated from English cabinet maker, Thomas Chippendale, and there are essentially four variations of the style labeled “Chippendale”:
  1. English with deep carving
  2. laborate French rococo (think Louis XV)
  3. Gothic with pointed arches, quatrefoils and fret worked legs
  4. Chinese style with latticework and laxquer

(thank you Wikipedia)

So you get the picture now.  Glorious clean lines.  Bamboo detail.  Bright colors.  Classic but Modern.  LOVE!!

I just can’t get over how amazing a pair of these would look in our living room.   Our living room currently serves two purposes – being a living room and being an office.  These would break up the room, and bring definition to the two spaces – on the right side there is the “work area” with the desk and reading chair (aka wicker chair for the time being), and on the left is the “entertainment space” for hanging out and watching TV.  I want something more substantial to replace the wicker chair in the corner, but I think Chippendale’s are the first priority…

See what I mean?  Kind of perfect, right??

I’ve already started scouring Craigslist for a pair and I can tell that it’s going to be a serious challenge to find more a pair at a reasonable cost.  Most are a bit worn out, so I’m expecting there will be some serious elbow grease involved to fix them up… that is the thing about love though… you’ll do anything.  And I am IN LOVE with these!

Hello, everyone! It’s Mari here from Design Shuffle, a social networking site for interior designers and design enthusiasts. With thousands of photos to look through, this website is a fabulous place to find interior décor inspiration! As a writer for Design Shuffle, I’m so fortunate to get to visit lovely blogs like Cup Half Full to share some of my favorite rooms. Today’s guest post is about decorating ideas for bedrooms.

Becky is in search of furnishings for her dream bedroom – one that will also work well for her significant other. That’s exactly the challenge that faces many of us as we aim to create inviting and comfortable homes for our families. I hope you will enjoy the eight inspiration rooms I’ve brought to share with Becky and you today.

Bedroom Inspiration
Black and white stripes and brilliant green accessories bring this room to life. Since Becky’s pieces of artwork have a lot of red in them, these pops of green could be changed to that deep color for an appealing look.

Bedroom Inspiration
A deeply tufted headboard is stunning even when glimpsed from another room. White bedding like this can be brightened up with just a touch or two of color. A gorgeous Juju hat with creamy feathers seems to be the perfect understated accessory for this space.

Bedroom Inspiration

A monogrammed pillow is a lovely addition to this comfy bed. I love the clear glass lamps and tufted white bench with nailhead trim.

Bedroom Inspiration
In a more casual eclectic bedroom, the decorative accessories are all done in black and white. The huge artwork turned headboard seems to be an exploded piece of lace—an intriguing creative choice.

Bedroom Inspiration
Another white bedroom design is accented in black. Venetian mirrors add a touch of glamour. White painted chairs with black upholstery are an unexpected, but lovely choice.

Bedroom Inspiration
This dramatic bedroom has an upholstered footboard as well as headboard. The bedding is similar to Becky’s chosen design. I love the white drapes with an intricate black pattern at the top and bottom of each panel.

Bedroom Inspiration
We included this image because of the slim lamps, graphic black and white pillow and choice of landscape print as artwork.

Bedroom Inspiration
This lovely interior design takes on a happy chic feel with pops of rich color and a slightly restrained use of zebra pattern on the stools. Happy bedroom décor hunting! I wish you splendid success.

Cocktail Hour – we are bringing it back!

The boomer generation really knew how to live – cocktail hour at 5:00 each day?  Yes please!! Let’s be honest…after a long day at work, I’m dying for a glass of wine, or a strong drink.  In our apartment, the wine bottles are displayed in a wine hutch in the dining room, but the liqueur is hidden out of sight – dark alcohol in the cabinets, clear in the freezer.  Honestly, Grey Goose and Makers Mark have left something to be desired in the packaging department, but few decanters easily bring elegance back to the scene.

Highstreet Market

If you want to splurge, check out Macys or Bloomingdales for the ever classic Waterford or Lenox.  If you are like me – on a strict budget (thank you honey) – check out Homegoods or Ross for a cut glass version – you could probably score something in the $20 range.  You aren’t going to get that rush of, “wow I own something fancy” when you purchase, but you will get the rush of “wow, I just saved a ton of money for something that looks darn close to crystal.”
Think a bar cart isn’t really your style?  Think again!  “Retro” is back in a big way – the theme of every wedding I see is “Vintage”.  I am seeing more and more patterns on fabrics, pillows, and wallpaper that I recognize from my grandmother’s house.  Heck, Banana Republic came out with a Mad Men inspired collection this year!

To the core, my taste is classic contemporary, HOWEVER you have to admit that retro inspired pieces always look super interesting and totally cool!   It’s totally out of my comfort zone for decor, but its exciting, and I kind of love it… in my humble opinion, it’s a total compliment to classic OR modern decor.  LOVE!

Can I Live Here… Please?

I have just discovered Lonny – a gorgeous online site with design inspiration, but the best part (yes it gets better) is their online magazine!!  I want to live in it’s pages.  I think I’m in love.

They have the standard site that is organized by category (living room, bedroom, kitchen, etc), where the photos are displayed in a gallery format – just browse and click.  It’s very visual, and very lovely.  In addition to their site, they have a digital magazine where you virtually flip through the pages – very tactile.  It would be fabulous on an ipad, because honestly there is just something so therapeutic about flipping through the pages of a magazine.  Right?!  New LOVE.

Living Room Inspiration

While I have made a lot of progress on the apartment, the living room is pretty much at a standstill from my last post about the living room “transformation” (aka hanging curtains).  The living room has pretty much turned into my work-space, where I sand, spackle, buff, prime, and paint.  I’ve been logging some serious hours painting the bedroom furniture (armoire and nightstands) and since I’m putting in the time, I’ve decided to replace the hardware.

I don’t think I mentioned it before, but this furniture belonged to my grandmother, so obviously I adore it for sentimental reasons, but also just love the look.  The pieces have very classic lines and lovely details that you just can’t find anymore.  They are sturdy and gorgeous, however the original hardware was NOT gorgeous.  They looked identical to these:

That said, the handles left the drawers with two holes, and though I hunted high and low for different pulls, my grandmother had splurged for custom size handles… what did this mean for me? It was going to cost me some serious money to custom order 14 individual handles in varying lengths.

Solution?? Plug the holes… and get updated single knob pulls like this:
Lugarno Knob
Thus ensued my Tim the Toolman Taylor escapades in the living room.  That said, the project is nearing the finish line which means that the armoire, both nightstands, and all twelve drawers will no longer be hanging out in the living room.  Hooray!  I’ve got one more nightstand and the armoire to sand and paint, but it should be an quicker process than the drawers! (knock on wood)

So once the bedroom furniture project is finished… then what? Great question… once it’s finished and back in the bedroom, I get to have fun finishing the living room.  Much of the big pieces are in place, but its the little touches, that need some work.  One thing that has really started to bug me is the rug.  We have a lovely rug in there right now, but its just too small for the scale of the room.  New rug is a must, and I am loving the more contemporary lattice patterns (shocker, right?!)  I spent some time putting together an inspiration board for the living room, and while there are a few things that can (and probably will) change, I think this is pretty close to what the finished product will be:

My goal here was to keep the focus on how light and airy the room is.  I’m sticking to a palate of light colors – tans, grays,  yellows, and creme.  The best part? Many of the things in my inspiration board, we already have!

The coffee and side tables came as a set, and are made of dark black brown wood – very similar to the table in the photograph.  Nothing earth shattering going on there, but the set is sturdy, functional, and there is enough modernity to appease my better half.

The sofa – right now, my love seat is a two cushion version of the below, and we have been on the hunt for a second larger sofa to replace Kris’ love seat from his bachelor days.  When I first moved to the city, my mom gifted me lamps identical to the brushed aluminium below – classic and simple, and I still love them 5 years later.

As I mentioned before, I got four panels of silk curtains from Bed Bath & Beyond (a total steal), and we ordered this exact painting from Ballard Designs.  I’m actually a bit embarrassed to admit we ordered art online without seeing it in person, but it really is gorgeous.  For the size and quality, this “painting” looks amazing – even better in person than online.  Trust me!
x

My desk is one of my greatest scores – I needed a vanity at my old apartment (when it was just me, and I could be as girly as I wanted), and found this amazing Crate and Barrel desk on Craigslist.  Yup.  Fifty bucks later, it was mine!  I’m not going to lie and say that Craigslist is chalk full of amazing finds – you have to hunt in order to find the hidden nuggets of gold, but they are there.  “Why would someone sell a perfectly good brand new desk from Crate and Barrel?” one might wonder.  In this case, the girl I bought it from was moving cross country, had just bought the desk a few months prior, and didn’t want to pay to ship all her furniture to the east coast… her loss = my gain!

As for those candles – aren’t they cool?  I had seen them at Cost Plus over the holidays in their “seasonal” section, but in my opinion they are perfect year round.  They are actually wrapped in birch bark, so its not candles made to look like trees – they’re actually candles wrapped by tree bark! Ingenious!  I am looking for a small wood crate to hold them in – possibly nesting in moss.  I have them on a copper plate with sand, and its just not right.  At all.
x

So what’s left?  The good stuff – fun patterned throw pillows – Etsy is a gold mine here, and my real problem is narrowing it down to which pillows to choose?!  Should they all be different, should I do at least two of each for continuity or is it enough to have them in the same color family?  Should I have the same sets on each couch or mix them up (I am going to mix them surely).
The owl photographs.  I love them, my best friend hates them.  Should that deter me?  It probably won’t.
The sunburst mirrors – I LOVE, but I do not LOVE the price tag I have seen on most of them in the store (upwards of $300!)  I want a set of 3 so this could prove challenging… to say the least.
So that’s it – after visually putting it together, I am more and more excited about this room.  I have renewed energy to finish the bedroom furniture, so we can live in a home… not Santa’s Workshop.
Happy Inspiration!

Interior Design: Bedroom Challenge

So after some number crunching, it’s apparent that the gorgeous bedding from Restoration Hardware is not at all within our price range.  That said, I am looking elsewhere for inspiration that will fit into my original vision for our bedroom.  We are going for something that feels luxurious, clean, and classic.  No frills (that is Kris’ main ask), and since I already ordered this print and this print, we are needing something that won’t clash with that vibrant red (I’m still thinking mainly white).

I am loving the look and feel of the below bed – still simple, but with a more intricate scroll border.

Lake View Residence Bedroom traditional bedroom

I found several inexpensive options that look extremely similar to the above:

  1. Check out the Egyptian Cotton Cable Duvet available at both Sears and the Cassa Decor for $109.
  2. There is also a very simple duvet set from West Elm, also for $109 for a king (is that the magic number or what?)
  3. eBay has a lovely duvet with greek key border for $86.  I am not sure how I personally feel about buying bedding off of eBay, but since the seller has great reviews, it could be worth a shot!
  4. Finally another steal from Sears!  It’s definitely pricier than the rest at $320 for the set – I feel like I have to see it in person to validate the considerably higher cost!

Indoor / Outdoor Living

I’m not sure if it’s the chilly weather, or if I’ve been feeling cooped up in our small cozy apartment, but lately, I’ve found myself day-dreaming about gorgeous indoor / outdoor living spaces.  I envision sitting out late drinking wine and chatting by the fire, cookouts, warm nights, and fuzzy fleece blankets for when summer turns to fall.

I love our little life in San Francisco, but look at these gorgeous spaces.  I am definitely making a mental note for when Kris and I do buy a house and settle down in the suburbs.  How amazing are some of these?!
