Gallery Wall… without Art

Yesterday, I posted about my goals for decorating our house in 2013, and one of the items on the list was to replace the dwarfed sunburst mirror in the hallway.  If you remember, the sunburst mirror that is hanging there right now was a fun DIY I posted about last year – (original post here).  I am still absolutely loving it, but it’s too small for this space.  Don’t worry – it will likely relocate to our living room or bedroom.
With the sunburst mirror moving to another room, I’ve been brainstorming about what should go on that wall.  I think I am leaning towards a gallery wall of sorts.  I know, I know… I totally chickened out on the gallery wall idea in the living room, but I have a new take on it for the hallway. I am thinking of doing a gallery wall made up entirely of picture frames – no art.
I’ve seen several inspirations from around the web where multiple ornate frames – all in the same color – and it’s FABULOUS!
This white on white on white is very pretty.  I’m not sure we’ll end up with tone on tone in the hallway – especially since our walls are off-white right now, but it’s definitely a possibility…

I am loving this collection of ornate frames from Etsy – antique white!

This next one is a great inspiration – especially since I’ll likely go with white frames on a contrasting wall…  I love how they are staggered down the stairs.

I love the patina on these – I’d been imagining crisp white, but perhaps a little jolt of blue is what this wall needs…

This picture came from a Halloween feature from Better Homes and Gardens – spooky for sure with the faux cobwebs, but also really pretty.  I am thinking I’ll stay away from black, since there is a lot of that going on elsewhere in our house.

And another all white hallway – this looks the most gallery like, and I still really love the look.  I also love that they did this installation in a narrow hallway like ours.
Another idea I had was to go with a gallery wall made up of mirrors.  This would help reflect light, and open things up – or are plain frames the way to go??

2013 Home Improvement

Now that we are well into the new year, and I am finally getting used to writing “2013” instead of “2012” I’ve started thinking about goals for our home this year.  Assuming we stay put for a bit, I have quite the laundry list of things I want to check off in our little apartment.

First things first, I have to take our Christmas Tree down (gasp) – yes it’s true.  It’s brown, and SO DRY it’s not even funny, but with Kris out of commission, I haven’t been able to take it out yet.  So really… it’s not my fault. Once I get the Christmas tree down, and the millions of pine needles swept up, I’ll be able to tackle my 2013 list for our house.

Let’s start with the Bedroom. Soak in this god awful “before” picture… this one was taken just after we moved in… you can’t see the wall of boxes at the foot of the bed… this was the “good” area so you can only imagine what it looks like outside the frame.  With this horrid image in your mind, you’ll really be able to appreciate the improvements, as I post some “afters” this year.

A month or so into living here, I hung a few mirrors, replaced the lamps, flipped over the duvet, and added a few new throw pillows.  A slight improvement, but still… blah.

This fall, after making absolutely NO headway on the bedroom, I got some faux fur pillows, and a fuzzy throw to refresh things, and this was pretty much where the room stood before having our new bed delivered last month…  With this image in your mind, here is what is on the list for bedroom updates…

Bedroom Updates:
  – New Bedding
  – New Rug
  – Upholstered Headboard
  – Relocate quatrefoil mirrors
  – Hang something else above the headboard
  – New TV Stand
  – New curtains (possibly move existing silk panels to living room)
  – Rewire and hang chandelier
  – Hang something above armoire
  – Hang something above TV
  – Get rid of gold metal stand

Quite the laundry list, eh? I have a feeling that as the room evolves, the list will get longer, but that’s where it stands for now…

Ok moving on to the dining room… so it turns out that I have only one single picture of our dining room, and it’s of the window – you can’t see the awesome Craigslist table and chairs that I got for $50 total, so I’ll have to update you with more photos.  For now, here is the single picture I have…

I love the pale aqua color that I painted it when we moved in – especially paired with the brown silk curtains, but this room still has some updates on the list…

Dining Room
  – Sand and re-paint chairs
  – Sand and re-paint dining room table
  – Reupholster seat cushions
  – Replace Art
  – Re-paint bookshelf

Next up is our hallway – I already have some updates here, but still need to photograph them.  More to come there, but with this most recent photograph in mind, here are the updates on my list:

Hallway:
  – Wire up a lamp (the overhead light is ghastly at night time)
  – Replace dwarfed sunburst mirror
  – Paint walls for greater contrast with the linen closet
  – Organize linen closet

Finally, the living room – this room has definitely gotten the most love in terms of feeling “finished,” but again, I have a long list of changes to make.  Some of them small, but some of them big.  I doubt we will get through all these changes in 2013, but it’s always nice to dream… here is a reminder of how the living room looks right now…

And here is the list…

Living Room
  – Paint trim white for contrast against creme colored walls
  – Add a new standing lamp
  – Replace lamp on the side table (get rid of faux finished monster)
  – Sort out art on wall behind black love seat (gallery wall, larger pieces, abstract??)
  – New sofas (in my dream world, this would happen immediately)
  – Replace wicker chair
  – Replace / revamp cheap ikea table with something taller

Ok, that is a lot to do, but I think we can make some of these happen for sure.  Some people might think it’s crazy to put this much time and energy into a place we don’t own, but to see where it started compared to where it is now makes me feel like it’s completely worth it.

Cleaning out the Christmas Clutter

Well… ALMOST…  I can’t bear to take down our tree just yet!!

Growing up, I’d get so sad every year after Christmas.  After all the excitement, the holiday was over, and all our pretty Christmas decorations would get put away.  My mom would opt for really simple, clean, white decor, and I thought it looked stark and bare in contrast to all the garlands, ornaments, and lights.

As an adult, I get it now.  Out with the clutter, and in with the clean slate.  I think white is perfect for this purpose, and these rooms are fabulous, post-Christmas, “clean out the clutter and simplify” inspiration… Don’t you think??

What could be better than a few graphic black and white throw pillows mixed in with a fuzzy blanket, cow hide, and lots and lots of white.  Nothing.  Nothing is better.

Look at those windows – amazing for letting in what winter light there is.  January still has short days, and the light is harsh, but all white really brightens up a space – even on a dreary day!
Ahh, the one random warm day we always get in January – after all this rain, I am looking forward to it, and a light white throw, and a beautiful white settee look both wintery and summery at the same time – all white perfection for any season!
Simple styling at it’s best – I am (obviously) still very much into faux fur, so gotta get that in there… and some bare branches placed in a simple glass vase are pretty in this wintery room.

Peacock Print

Art can get really pricey really quickly, and while Etsy is a FABULOUS source for online art, so are old books.  The library in my neighborhood had a book sale a few months back, and walking by one afternoon, I ended up taking home a very random book of prints.  Perhaps a coffee table book at one time??

To be honest, most of the prints in it are tattered, and not so impressive, but there was one of a peacock that I flipped to, and I knew I had to have this book!

The page was incredibly tattered, but I was able to scan it to a digital copy, upload it to Shutterfly, and have them print out a high resolution image to frame.  It just came this week, and I am dying to frame it and put it up in our entry!

There was another print of a red and white flower, but I’m not completely sold on it… it would be great around the holidays, but I don’t know if it would translate well in other seasons.

It would be pretty in a series with other botanical prints, but unfortunately the other floral prints in the book are completely non-salvageable.

I have a special plan for the frame that the peacock is going into, and he is going to find a home in our entryway in the not so distant future!

The book was only $3, so I think it was a huge win!  What do you think?

Jonathan Adler… I love you!

Jonathan Adler = AMAZING!!

If you have not had the opportunity to go to one of his stores, you are missing out on one of life’s true joys!  Luckily, there is an adorable shop nestled in my neighborhood here in San Francisco, and Kris can attest – I drag him in every single time we walk past. We could be on our way home from breakfast, on our way to coffee, or trying to hail a cab, but I have to go in, and if it’s closed, I have to press my nose against the window to ohh-and-ahh over the new displays.
His stuff is mod, edgy, colorful, fun, a little irreverent, and a total throwback to our parent’s era… which makes it classic again!  How does he do that?!
Everything is unique, and feels one of a kind which I absolutely love – you could pretty much walk in there with a blindfold, pick something up, and end up falling in love with it.  I’ve put together a little gift guide / wish list that is ALL Jonathan Adler.  Perfect for a special gift – for birthdays, Christmas, or housewarming…

Pretty much any pillow in his collection is to die for, but I really love this chevron stripe and Ipanema throw pillow – fabulous together or separately.  I also love the graphic orange “Richard Nixon” throw (how does he come up with these names??)

This pretty blue and gold Santorini Pandora box would be perfect to hold jewelry in your bedroom, or even paperclips in a chic home office, and how cute is this little silver fox figurine.  We call my dad our silver fox, so this would be a wonderful (and funny) gift for him.

Another great (and inexpensive gift) is this coffee table book, and I for one REALLY want it (hint hint).

These chic zebra print nesting trays are the perfect gift for the hostess in your life, and don’t you think that this pretty orange and pink print coffee mug would make early mornings a little happer??  I do.

The next few are larger investments, but a few that I would die of happiness to own – how cool is this Sputnik Chandelier??  It would make any dining room a really special space.  And that
black chippendale arm chair?? You KNOW I’ve been lusting after these forever (remember this post from last March??)  And finally, the Navy Louis Arm Chair – Joan Rivers and the “Fashion Police” team on E! have their entire studio decked out in Jonathan Adler, and what else do they sit on??  This throne.  AMAZING.

I want it all!!

Pretty in Pink

Isn’t this room the epitome of luxe?!
I am 100% certain that Kris would die if he came home to pink curtains in our living room, but one day after we win the lotto and make it rich, I will have a ladies only sitting room that looks just like this.  Bright and cheery – the pink adds just the right amount of sass, don’t you think??.  This room will be dedicated to book club (aka wine club), rousing discussions of Real Housewives, and crafting parties.  As I said… ladies only.
Alas, if you are a single gal living on your own, or your man has been perfectly trained to say, Whatever you want, honey (my favorite phrase, by the way), then get to work on recreating this dream room, and don’t look back!
I love how the soft greige (beige / grey) wall color, and white furniture keep this from being over the top girly, and brown is a natural compliment to pink.  It’s like they were born to be together.
This coffee table is pretty much what I am looking for to replace ours one day – I love the gold metal, and glass top, and I love that it is BIG, so it can hold a lot of stuff on the shelf below.  Add a few mirrored pieces to reflect light (and your pretty face of course) keep the floor neutral and fuctional, so there is no competition with the draperies, and you’ll be sitting pretty.  Take a look at my design board for a little inspiration…
If you are going to do it up right, I’d go custom on the curtains.  That can get expensive, so if you are handy with a sewing machine, this could be perfect for you.  I found these curtains on Linens and Things, and they are a steal if you are trying to recreate this look on a budget, but I still feel they are no comparison with the perfectly peachy silk drapes in the original room.  Dying white silk could be another option, but I am definitely no expert there, so I wouldn’t attempt it unless you were pretty confident on the outcome.
The other option here is to have someone else sew them – there are plenty of local seamstresses who could whip up some curtains for relatively cheap, so if you shop around, and find the perfect fabric, that is another way to go.
RugsUSA is literally my favorite source for rugs now – this huge woven number is a steal when comparing with places like Pottery Barn, or even local shops.  Etsy’s pillow selection is insane, and there are amazing deals to be found.  A word of caution – if you want the pattern on both sides, be sure to confirm they don’t use a solid backing on one side to cut costs.  Sometimes, it’s just worth it to pay more.
This mirror is from ZGallerie, and I’ve been lusting after it for some time now – it’s HUGE (and quite heavy) so for our apartment, we’d need to put some serious holes in the wall to support it’s weight.  Mounting this with anchors just isn’t worth it for us renters, but if you own your home, this mirror measures 39.5″ across – that’s over 3 feet!  A statement for sure, and it’s on sale for $214.  Someone needs to benefit from this if it’s not me!
Finally, Ballard was my source for the sofa and chair.  Elegant lines, good quality… need I say more??  The reviews online were rave, so I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment.
Enjoy the where to buy guide below, and of course, if anyone has interest in a custom design board for a room they are working on, send me a private message!

Ornament Garland DIY

Hello hello and happy Monday!

I’m all tuckered out from the MANY holiday parties we went to over the weekend, but despite the back-to-back party schedule, I still managed to fit in a little DIY project that I’ve been dying to try!

Kate of Centsational Girl created a beautiful, blingy garland for her holiday mantle that I just had to have!  Using her tutorial, and these photos for inspiration, I set out to make one of my own.

Trust me when I say that this project could not be easier!

I bought one large multipack of silver ornaments from target, along with three smaller sized packs to vary the size and shape of the ornament clusters.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t find floral wire, fishing wire, or even a thin rope at the store, but they did have wired garlands with stars all over it, so I figured that was close enough to get the job done.

I laid everything out first into a little assembly line, and got to work threading varying ornaments onto the wire garland.

And the final result??

A really pretty (really easy to make) holiday garland for our hallway!  I’d originally been thinking of doing this garland in golds and bronze colors, but I think the cool colors of the silver and gunmetal look really pretty with the blue table.

I’m still working on styling the table, since the two potted red amaryllis plants that were there earlier this week didn’t look right with the wintery looking garland. In my dream world, I’d have two mini evergreen trees here, but alas, it’s all a bit too much for our teeny hallway.

In the end, this garland ended up being around 4 feet long, which is perfect for it to serpentine around the top of the table, and the best part is, that if I ever want to add to it, I can tie more wire onto the existing garland, and thread on more ornaments.

Ornament garland… SUCCESS!

Bedroom Updates

Over the Holiday Break, I plan on finally making some serious progress on our bedroom!  Yep – it only took me a full year of inspiration boards, varying color combinations, and swearing up and down that this room was next on my list.

Yesterday, our BEAUTIFUL new rug arrived after being back-ordered for a month.  Remember this post where I agonized over the creme colored rug vs. the navy??  Well, my practical side won this fight, and I ended up opting for the creme colored trellis, and as undecided as I was in the moment, I could not be happier!  It is super luxe in person, and I can’t wait to roll it out in the bedroom.  RugsUSA – I heart you.  I really do.

If you like this rug, you can find it here

An update on our bed… Kris and I have decided that a new mattress will be our Christmas gift to each other.  I had no clue that a good mattress ran around $4K, so while it’s no puppy with a big red bow around it’s neck, it’s dang good present in my humble opinion. I’m so excited for a good night’s sleep, and no back pain when I wake up (god, I sound like I’m 90 years old saying things like that!)

The other part of this present for ourselves??  New bedding!

I ordered a few options during Macys’ Friends and Family Sale last week – did anyone else hit them up for 60% off??  Holla!

Everything has shipped, so the bedding should be arriving towards the end of this week!  Yippy!

First option is the soothing creme colored bedding.  This would mean that our entire room would be light colors with creme colored carpet, creme drapes, and creme bedding.  Hey, we don’t have kids… we can do things like this!!

I’m not a huge fan of those faux french looking throw pillows, but I love the quilt-like comforter and European shams.  Definitely looking forward to seeing this one in person…
Option number two is actually one I’ve had my eye on for a while – its an abstract paisley with a pale blue background.  I love the quilted coverlet in this photo as well, so I was sure to order that too.  This option definitely lends more visual interest with the pattern, but I’m not sure how these colors will translate in person.  Is that tan going to look olive in person?  Gold?  How will the fabric feel?

Regardless, since we are upgrading our mattress from a queen to a king, we’ll need new bedding one way or another, so at least we have some initial options!

Here’s how I see the room coming together with each…

What do you think? Yay, or nay?  Should I keep looking?

I think I need to see the fabrics in person, and get everything in the room to really decide which one is the keeper!

Moroccan Inspired Dining Room

Isn’t this the most lovely dining room???

Designer, Matthew Patrick Smythe went to town on this Manhattan apartment, featured this month in Elle Decor.  The apartment covers a range of styles from modern to eclectic, but somehow it works… I mean… quite obviously it more than works, but of all the rooms, this dining room was my favorite.  It’s visually striking with graphic navy and white wallpaper, a pretty Capiz chandelier, and luxe velvet chairs.

If you couldn’t tell, the wallpaper is Schumacher, and if you ask me, it MAKES the room.  The delicate lacy detail reminds me of an intricate Moroccan gate, leading into a serene courtyard garden.  It’s absolutely amazing, but I don’t know if I could pull the trigger on it myself.  Since wallpaper is hard to install, even harder to take down, and can get really pricey really quickly, I’d try to recreate this look using paint.

If you love this room, then you are going to love the affordable inspiration board I’ve drawn up.

I’d start the room off by painting it a dramatic navy with grey undertones.  Buying multiple wood carvings and hanging them in a grid will break up the wall, and simulate the beautiful detail of the Schumacher wallpaper. The ones in this inspiration are from Target, and at roughly 12″ square, nine of these would create quite a large grid.
Check out the where to buy guide if you want to try this look out on your own, and for more inspiration, look through the rest of this lovely apartment at Elle Decor!!
WHERE TO BUY:

Side note: the wood carvings are wood, but if you want them to be white, a quick coat of paint would do the trick!

I’d also spend the extra $7 for the spray attachment if you are going the spray paint route… it will save you some major finger cramps (plus, you get to pretend you are in Charlie’s Angels… which is pretty awesome, and well worth the extra $7)

Frugal Finds – Live Boxwood Wreath

On the note of Christmas decor, look what I found today at Trader Joes…

A beautiful live boxwood wreath!!

And guess how much this cost??  Ten bucks!  Can you believe it??  They were selling live boxwood wreaths at the Christmas Tree lot near my house, and they were going for $50.  I think I’ll go back tomorrow and grab a few more before they are all gone!

The photo above is the inspiration for how I plan to hang the wreath… perhaps it will hang inside our dining room window, or against the large mirror in the living room…. I am so excited to find some pretty velvet ribbon and hang this bad boy up!!

Hurry, go snatch up all the $10 boxwood wreaths you can find!
